Mamdani, a 33-year-old New York State Assembly member, decisively defeated disgraced former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo with 56% to 44% in the final ranked-choice voting results.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Two prominent Obama-era officials<\/strong>, former Treasury Secretary <strong>Jack Lew<\/strong> and former Office of Management and Budget Director <strong>Peter Orszag,\u00a0<\/strong>have publicly opposed Mamdani\u2019s candidacy, <strong>warning that his progressive economic policies could harm New York City.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cms.zerohedge.com\/s3\/files\/inline-images\/05dc-ambassador-pqkc-articleLarge_jpg_92.jpg?itok=FXm_8J79\"><em>Jack Lew<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>In a CNBC interview on Wednesday, Lew expressed deep concern about Mamdani\u2019s platform<\/strong>. \u201cThe policies that he outlines are not policies that would be good for New York,\u201d Lew said. \u201c<strong>I worry deeply, having spent most of my life in New York,<\/strong> about a city I call home.\u201d He further cautioned against populist-driven policies from both political extremes, stating, \u201cI see a similarity between policies solutions to the left and the right that satisfy populist sentiment, don\u2019t always go through the filter of \u2018do they work? I don\u2019t think they work. <strong>I think that\u2019s a problem<\/strong>,\u201d Lew added.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><strong>Orszag, now Chairman and CEO of Lazard, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.msn.com\/en-us\/news\/politics\/peter-orszag-says-democrats-increasingly-hate-jews-and-capitalism-after-new-york-city-mayoral-primary\/ar-AA1Hv4ly\">shared<\/a> similar apprehensions in a separate CNBC interview last week, <\/strong>describing Mamdani\u2019s victory as indicative of troubling trends within the Democratic Party. \u201cLet me step back and just say that I am saddened to say that I think the Democratic Party is becoming increasingly antisemitic and anti-capitalism,\u201d Orszag said. \u201cAnd the thing about it is turning \u2026 towards socialism and turning away from your moral principles through antisemitism never works. <strong>So there is a fundamental concern that I have and I think many people have about the direction of the Democratic Party along those two dimensions.<\/strong>\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Orszag pointed to specific examples, noting, \u201cT<strong>he Democratic candidate for mayor has embraced the \u2018global intifada\u2019 idea.\u201d <\/strong>He also criticized the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee for distributing fundraising emails from a senior operative who suggested Jewish donors are primarily motivated by tax cuts.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/assets.zerohedge.com\/s3fs-public\/inline-images\/orszag1.jpg?itok=w4njLHrO\"><em>Peter Orszag<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201c<strong>I am hopeful that the Democratic Party will change course and, again, history shows that neither being anti-capitalism nor being antisemitic is the pathway to any sort of good outcome,<\/strong>\u201d Orszag added.<\/p>\n<p>Mamdani\u2019s win is just one example of growing tensions within the Democrat Party. Similar concerns about the party\u2019s direction have surfaced elsewhere.<strong> In June, David Hogg, the 25-year-old Parkland shooting survivor and gun control activist, resigned as vice chair of the Democrat National Committee (DNC) amid internal turmoil.<\/strong> Hogg faced backlash for his controversial plan to intervene in primary races against incumbent Democrats, which many viewed as divisive and a breach of DNC neutrality.<\/p>\n<p>After the DNC called for a new election for his position citing procedural issues, <strong>Hogg chose not to run again.<\/strong> In his departure, he sharply criticized the party, <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/GuntherEagleman\/status\/1930658267786600930\">calling<\/a> its leadership a \u201cgovernment of old people\u201d fixated on \u201cattention and reputation\u201d rather than addressing critical issues like the economy.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile,\u00a0<strong>Randi Weingarten &#8211;\u00a0<\/strong>longtime head of the 1.8 million-member American Federation of Teachers\u00a0have also quit the DNC.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>Sen. Elissa Slotkin (D-MI) <strong>has also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2025\/jun\/26\/democratic-party-senator-elissa-slotkin\">voiced<\/a> frustration with the party\u2019s lack of cohesion during a speech at the Center for American Progress on Thursday.<\/strong> <\/strong>\u201c<strong>We\u2019re like a solar system with no sun<\/strong> &#8230; We don\u2019t act as a team, and when we don\u2019t work as a team, we turn our guns on each other, and it\u2019s so, so, so, fruitless,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/siphox.zhstore.com\/\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Slotkin emphasized the need for unified leadership,<\/strong> saying, \u201cThey are the leaders of the House and Senate. I work with them every single day. I push on them every day, especially in the Senate. I think they would attest to that. And we need to work as a team, and we need wartime generals who are gonna get us there because of what\u2019s going on in the country.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The lawmaker also acknowledged internal and grassroots pressure for change but offered no specific solutions, noting, \u201cI have no big announcement to make.
