“Around Lia, I Wasn’t Going To Risk Anything”: UPenn Swimmer Breaks Silence<\/span><\/p>\n

A former teammate of William \u201cLia\u201d Thomas praised the University of Pennsylvania for\u00a0agreeing<\/a>\u00a0to keep men out of women\u2019s locker rooms following negotiations with the Trump administration.<\/p>\n

For the first time Monika Burzynska shared her frustrations with her alma mater for letting Lia Thomas, a male, undress and shower alongside female swimmers. Last week, the Trump administration unfroze hundreds of millions of dollars in federal funds in exchange for the Ivy League university\u2019s agreement to strip Thomas (pictured above<\/em>) of his records he took from female swimmers.<\/p>\n

The school also agreed to amend its policies to keep locker rooms and bathrooms single sex.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Burzynska shared her story recently with Fox News.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen that season eventually began, and Thomas became a fixture in the women\u2019s locker room, Burzynska often retreated to the corner of the room to change,\u201d <\/strong><\/em>the news outlet\u00a0reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cOther times, Burzynska timed exactly when she changed to coincide with when Thomas showered. Eventually, Burzynska opted to only change in the stalls or in the family locker across the hall.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

The head swimming coach largely ignored her concerns. <\/strong>While the coach called her concerns \u201cvalid\u201d he also told her \u201cLia is changing in your locker room and there\u2019s nothing you could do about it.\u201d<\/p>\n

The coach agreed it was \u201cnot fair\u201d but asked Burzynska not to share her frustrations but only to talk to him.<\/p>\n

The swimmer has a \u201ca deep sense of peace and validation,\u201d now that men won\u2019t be allowed in female locker rooms.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cNot only for me, but for all the girls on the team, for all the girls in the swim world and in the sport world. And I think this decision, it brought back \u2013 at least for me \u2013 a sense of fairness that had been lost,\u201d Burzynska said. \u201cWomen\u2019s records belong to women and that protecting the integrity of women\u2019s sports still matters.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

She shared how she used to have compassion for individuals with gender dysphoria but the Thomas situation changed her view of transgender issues.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cI thought it must be terrible to feel like you\u2019re trapped in the wrong body. Just be so out of touch with who you really are,\u201d Burzynska told Fox News.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cYou have these issues that are from afar and you never really quite think they\u2019re going to touch you personally until you\u2019re on a team with Lia Thomas and your locker is directly next to this biological male. And you would have never believed that you\u2019d be facing this issue directly.<\/em><\/p>\n

UPenn has agreed to right its wrongs, restore records to the rightful female athletes, and issue an apology to the women impacted by the man they allowed to compete as a woman.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd then when that happens, your views change where you still feel sorry for this person because they\u2019re clearly so deeply lost. But then it turns into more, \u2018OK, this is not fair,\u2019\u201d<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

She said UPenn is staunchly liberal and pro-LGBT, which conflicted with her conservative views.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd so I was kind of ready to embrace that, that my views wouldn\u2019t be welcomed because I\u2019ve been conservative most of my life,\u201d she said. \u201cMy beliefs are grounded in faith.\u201d<\/p>\n

Her testimony comports with what Paula Scanlan, another former UPenn swimmer,\u00a0previously told<\/a>\u00a0Matt Walsh of the\u00a0Daily Wire<\/em>.<\/p>\n

The decision to protect future female athletes from males who claim to be women has drawn praise from civil rights activists.<\/p>\n
