{"id":1545996,"date":"2025-07-09T01:45:00","date_gmt":"2025-07-09T05:45:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bugaluu.com\/news\/?p=1545996"},"modified":"2025-07-09T01:45:00","modified_gmt":"2025-07-09T05:45:00","slug":"green-china-runs-on-dirty-coal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bugaluu.com\/news\/green-china-runs-on-dirty-coal\/1545996\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;Green&#8217; China Runs On Dirty Coal"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span class=\"field field--name-title field--type-string field--label-hidden\">&#8216;Green&#8217; China Runs On Dirty Coal<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"clearfix text-formatted field field--name-body field--type-text-with-summary field--label-hidden field__item\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/opinion\/green-china-runs-on-dirty-coal-5883054?utm_source=partner&amp;utm_campaign=ZeroHedge\"><em>Authored by James Gorrie via The Epoch Times,<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In 2020, China\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/eastasia\/press\/6107\/china-announces-enhanced-climate-commitments-greenpeace-response\/\">announced<\/a>\u00a0its plan to\u00a0achieve carbon neutrality by 2060, with peak emissions expected to occur in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/eastasia\/blog\/68075\/why-2025-is-such-a-critical-year-for-chinas-energy-transition\/\">2030<\/a> and then decline thereafter.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cms.zerohedge.com\/s3\/files\/inline-images\/image%20-%202025-07-08T091512.616.jpg?itok=qaHt4X_e\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>According to Gao Yuhe, a Beijing-based project leader quoted by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/eastasia\/blog\/68075\/why-2025-is-such-a-critical-year-for-chinas-energy-transition\/\">Greenpeace<\/a> last month, it could be sooner than that. He said that <em><strong>\u201c2025 is a critical year for China to make overall emissions from its power sector stop increasing.\u201d<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>When it comes to so-called green energy, Chinese authorities talk a good game, but do they walk the walk when it comes to reducing the use of highly polluting coal?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Not really.<\/p>\n<p>What\u2019s more, the entire green argument is deeply flawed in multiple areas. More on that later.<\/p>\n<h2>Green Technology<\/h2>\n<p>China is indeed a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/article\/2024\/jul\/11\/china-building-twice-as-much-wind-and-solar-power-as-rest-of-world-report\">global leader<\/a> in developing, manufacturing, and installing green technology. No other nation can match its output of solar panels, wind-powered generators, batteries, and other renewable energy technology. Within the first five months of 2025, China added enough solar and wind-powered energy infrastructure to generate <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2025\/jun\/26\/china-breaks-more-records-with-massive-build-up-of-wind-and-solar-power\">as much electricity<\/a> as Poland, Indonesia, or Turkey. As of this year, China\u2019s solar power generation capacity comprises about <a href=\"https:\/\/reglobal.org\/snapshot-of-global-pv-markets-2024\/#:~:text=Cumulative%20installed%20capacity%20in%20the,more%20than%2040%20GW%20gap.\">50 percent<\/a> of the world\u2019s current solar power generation capacity.<\/p>\n<p><strong>With direction from Beijing, that trajectory is likely to continue. <\/strong>China is not only at the forefront of deploying renewable resources, but it also dominates the world market. No other nation can compete with China\u2019s low pricing of renewable energy technology.<\/p>\n<p>Pricing is a touchy subject for the rest of the world, though, because China\u2019s dominance is accomplished through state subsidies and below-cost pricing in foreign markets. That\u2019s called \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/asia.nikkei.com\/Opinion\/China-s-solar-panel-dumping-into-the-US-via-Southeast-Asia-comes-to-an-end\">dumping<\/a>, and it\u2019s against the trading rules, as it is highly destructive of other countries\u2019 renewable energy manufacturing sectors. But that\u2019s a different conversation for a different post.<\/p>\n<h2>China\u2019s Energy Paradox<\/h2>\n<p>But in terms of renewable energy use and its reliance on coal for energy generation, China\u2019s energy story is rather paradoxical. On the one hand, China is indeed the world\u2019s leader in deploying renewable energy; on the other hand, it is also the world\u2019s leader in coal use, dependency, and air pollution.<\/p>\n<p><strong>In short, China is not only the world\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/article\/2024\/aug\/16\/china-generating-enough-clean-energy-match-uk-entire-electricity-output\">biggest producer of renewable energy<\/a>, but it\u2019s also the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2025\/feb\/13\/china-coal-power-energy-production-quotas?utm_source=chatgpt.com\">world\u2019s biggest<\/a> producer and consumer of coal and carbon emissions.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>How does that align with its image as a global leader in clean energy? Not very well. Furthermore, neither of those statistics is likely to change in the near future, despite official claims to the contrary regarding coal consumption.<\/p>\n<h2>Energy Security Is Top Priority<\/h2>\n<p>The reason for China\u2019s schizophrenic energy policy is apparent: the future of China\u2019s energy supply is anything but certain or secure. That\u2019s a huge concern for the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), because the reliability of renewable solar- and wind-powered energy is much lower than coal. Weather is a huge factor, and energy uncertainty is something that no developed nation can afford.<\/p>\n<p>The CCP is painfully aware of its energy vulnerability, which explains why, in 2024, China approved 66.7 gigawatts (GW) of new coal-fired power plant capacity and began construction on 94.5 GW of new coal power plants, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.carbonbrief.org\/chinas-construction-of-new-coal-power-plants-reached-10-year-high-in-2024\/\">10-year high<\/a>. To get an idea of the scale of China\u2019s coal-powered plant construction plans, 93 percent of global construction starts for coal power in 2024 were in China. What\u2019s more, 1 GW is the output of a single, large coal-power energy plant.<\/p>\n<p><strong>That fact also helps explain why China is the world\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/energy\/chinas-coal-imports-hit-record-high-2024-2025-01-13\/#:~:text=Coal%20imports%20for%20the%20year,by%20China's%20real%20estate%20crisis.\">top coal producer and importer<\/a> in terms of volume. Although coal imports meet only a small fraction of its massive energy needs, in 2023, China imported 442 million tons, and in 2024, a record amount of 542.7 million tons.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Although projections for China\u2019s coal consumption indicate a slight decrease in 2025, the trend in coal usage and energy reliance is undeniable. China is not only sprinting to build more coal-powered energy plants, but has resumed construction on 3.3 GW of suspended coal-fired power plant projects. With\u00a0a global historical lifespan of coal-fired power plants of about\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/figure\/Lifetime-limits-for-coal-power-plants-We-show-lifetimes-of-retired-units-a-and-the_fig3_336654082#:~:text=The%20most%20common%20age%20of,operate%20much%20longer.%20...\">46 years<\/a>, and the possibility of lasting up to 60 years, it\u2019s clear that Beijing has no intention of transitioning to renewable energy sources as its main source of energy anytime\u00a0soon.<\/p>\n<h2>The Green Delusion of \u2018Renewables\u2019<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Green energy itself is a delusion.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>First, the materials used in wind turbines and solar panels, and the batteries needed to store the energy, must all be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mackinac.org\/blog\/2025\/renewables-arent-renewable\">mined from the earth<\/a>, just like nuclear material, coal, oil, and natural gas. Once used up, more must be produced, so they\u2019re actually non-renewable factors of production that are conveniently left out of the green calculus and are hardly carbon-neutral or environment-friendly.<\/p>\n<p>Second, given the <a href=\"https:\/\/financialpost.com\/opinion\/why-solar-wind-power-arent-winning\">unreliability<\/a> of wind and solar power, both are dependent upon the weather and other variables.<\/p>\n<p>Third, the <a href=\"https:\/\/robertbryce.substack.com\/p\/the-power-of-power-density\">low energy density<\/a> of wind and solar power (see Spain\u2019s recent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mackinac.org\/blog\/2025\/spains-grid-meltdown-shouldnt-be-a-surprise\">blackout<\/a>, or Germany\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/cei.org\/blog\/germany-is-smug-about-its-energy-errors\/\">energy crisis<\/a> in 2022), means that the amount of materials needed to be mined from the earth, such as rare earth minerals, oil for plastics, and various metals to create the infrastructure, is enormous and ongoing.
