Russia’s Formal Recognition Of The Taliban Comes At A Crucial Time For The Broader Region<\/span><\/p>\n

Russia became the first country to\u00a0formally recognize<\/a>\u00a0the\u00a0Taliban<\/a>\u00a0as the legitimate government of Afghanistan earlier this month. <\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/a><\/p>\n

This development comes at a crucial time for the region: Trump wants to return US forces to Afghanistan\u2019s Bagram Airbase; there are newfound concerns about the\u00a0North-South Transport Corridor<\/a>\u2019s (NSTC) viability after the recent\u00a0Iranian-Israeli War<\/a>; and Turkiye is\u00a0making a powerplay<\/a>\u00a0to expand its influence into Central Asia. <\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

Here are three background briefings:<\/p>\n

Correspondingly, the direct consequences of this latest development aim to: bolster the Taliban\u2019s resilience to\u00a0American pressure<\/a>\u00a0to once again host US forces;<\/strong> assist in the construction of Kabul\u2019s portion of the Pakistan-Afghanistan-Uzbekistan (PAKAFUZ<\/a>) railway and\/or make a bid for control over it; and rely more upon PAKAFUZ as a complement or even alternative to the NSTC with the tangential benefit of naturally expanding economic influence in Central Asia so as to gently counterbalance Turkiye\u2019s.<\/em><\/p>\n

It’s here where the economic drivers of this diplomatic decision come into play as detailed below:<\/p>\n

The gist is that the expansion of Russian economic influence in Afghanistan, the prerequisite of which is formal recognition of the Taliban as that country\u2019s legitimate government, will enable Moscow to pioneer energy and real-sector connectivity with\u00a0Pakistan\u2019s promising emerging market<\/a>\u00a0via Central Asia. <\/strong><\/p>\n

For that to happen, however, Afghan-Pakistani tensions must first abate and\u00a0Afghan-emanating terrorist threats<\/a>\u00a0to the region must be neutralized or at least contained. Here are some briefings about that:<\/p>\n

All in all, the economic, security, diplomatic, and ultimately strategic opportunities unlocked by Russia\u2019s formal recognition of the Taliban will turbocharge its influence in the broader region, which couldn\u2019t have come at a better time given concerns about the NSTC\u2019s viability and impending Turkish-US inroads. The timing of this development is coincidental, but it nevertheless comes at a crucial time for the broader region, thus strengthening Russia\u2019s stakeholder role and increasing its ability to shape events.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
