This is a consumer-centric strategy. We\u2019re following the consumer,\u201d<\/strong> Ramon Laguarta, PepsiCo\u2019s CEO, told investors on a call after being asked about Trump\u2019s announcement.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cIf the consumer is telling us that they prefer products that have sugar and they prefer products that have natural ingredients, we will give the consumer products that have sugar and have natural ingredients. <strong>So, this is a journey of following the consumer, trying to be a little bit maybe one step ahead of the consumer, but not too many steps. And it applies to both beverages and food<\/strong>.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cms.zerohedge.com\/s3\/files\/inline-images\/EXPLAINERS_COKE-VS-PEPSI_HEADER.jpg?itok=D48E8WoK\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/business\/pepsi-executive-floats-switch-to-sugar-after-trump-coca-cola-announcement-5889290?utm_source=partner&amp;utm_campaign=ZeroHedge\">As Jasper Fakkert reports for The Epoch Times, <\/a><strong>Trump <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/business\/coca-cola-agrees-to-use-cane-sugar-in-us-made-coke-trump-5888480\">said<\/a> on Wednesday that he had been discussing with Coca-Cola the possibility of switching Coke\u2019s sweetener to cane sugar in the United States, \u201cand they have agreed to do so,\u201d <\/strong>he said.<\/p>\n<p>A Coca-Cola spokesperson told The Epoch Times that the company appreciates Trump\u2019s enthusiasm for its brand and promised to soon share \u201cmore details on new innovative offerings within our Coca\u2011Cola product range.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Some Coca-Cola products feature cane sugar, although most Coke sold in the United States is made with corn syrup.<\/strong> Both Coca-Cola and PepsiCo updated their soda formulas in the 1980s to use corn syrup instead of sugar.<\/p>\n<p>Laguarta\u2019s announcement came during a call in which executives said that PepsiCo will relaunch its Lay\u2019s and Tostitos brands later this year to highlight that they contain no artificial colors or flavors.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>\u201cWe\u2019re trying to elevate the real food perception of Lay\u2019s. If you think about the simplest and most natural snack, it is a potato chip; it\u2019s a potato, it\u2019s oil, and it\u2019s a little bit of salt\u2014the most simple, no artificial ingredients,\u201d<\/strong><\/em> Laguarta said.<\/p>\n<p>The company also said it was expanding the use of avocado and olive oil across its brands, rather than the canola or soybean oil it uses. Some health influencers, including Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., have promoted removing seed oils from food.<\/p>\n<p>PepsiCo officials had <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/health\/pepsico-accelerating-transition-to-natural-colors-after-fda-bans-some-food-dyes-5848823\">announced<\/a> in April that they were quickening the company\u2019s transition to natural colors, in the wake of the Food and Drug Administration\u2019s banning of two artificial dyes.
