US Revokes Visas For Brazilian Judge, His Allies Over Bolsonaro Prosecution<\/span><\/p>\n

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced late Friday that he has revoked the visas of Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes, his \u201callies on the court,\u201d and their close relatives<\/strong>, citing an ongoing \u201cpolitical witch hunt\u201d targeting former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro and \u201ccensorship of protected expression in the United States.\u201d<\/p>\n

<\/a><\/p>\n

The decision came hours after Brazil\u2019s Supreme Court ordered<\/a> police to search Bolsonaro\u2019s home and attach an electronic monitor to the former leader\u2019s ankle.<\/strong> Bolsonaro, who has already had his passport confiscated, is now also subject to a nightly and weekend curfew.<\/p>\n

Under the same order<\/a> signed by de Moraes, Bolsonaro is barred from using social media, communicating with foreign diplomats, or getting close to foreign embassies. Earlier this year, he was denied<\/a> a request to temporarily get his passport back so he could attend President Donald Trump\u2019s second inauguration ceremony.<\/p>\n

Separately, de Moraes is leading an aggressive investigation into so-called \u201cdigital militias\u201d accused of spreading disinformation and hate speech during the Bolsonaro administration.<\/p>\n

Last year, he temporarily banned X across the country after the Elon Musk-owned social media platform refused<\/a> to remove certain accounts\u2014many linked to Bolsonaro supporters\u2014that de Moraes said had violated Brazilian law.<\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n

As Bill Pan reports for The Epoch Times<\/a>,\u00a0<\/strong>Rubio condemned the court\u2019s actions as politically motivated repression.<\/p>\n

\u201cPresident Trump made clear that his administration will hold accountable foreign nationals who are responsible for censorship of protected expression in the United States,\u201d <\/strong>Rubio said in a statement<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cBrazilian Supreme Federal Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes\u2019s political witch hunt against Jair Bolsonaro created a persecution and censorship complex so sweeping that it not only violates basic rights of Brazilians, but also extends beyond Brazil\u2019s shores to target Americans,\u201d he continued.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cI have therefore ordered visa revocations for Moraes and his allies on the court, as well as their immediate family members, effective immediately.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

De Moraes is presiding over Bolsonaro\u2019s trial<\/a>, in which the former president faces charges of an attempted coup related to the Jan. 8, 2023, protests at Brazil\u2019s federal government buildings.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Authorities allege the protests were part of a broader conspiracy to overturn the 2022 election results that brought Bolsonaro\u2019s left-wing rival Luiz In\u00e1cio Lula da Silva to power.<\/p>\n

Bolsonaro has consistently denied wrongdoing or any involvement in the alleged coup plot. He has not been convicted, but is nonetheless barred from running for public office until 2030.<\/p>\n

His treatment has become a flashpoint in the escalating standoff between the Trump and Lula administrations.<\/strong> Last week, the U.S. president threatened<\/a> to impose a 50 percent tariff on Brazilian goods unless Bolsonaro\u2019s prosecution was dropped.<\/p>\n

Trump also cited Brazil\u2019s non-tariff trade barriers in his decision to impose the new tariff rate. Meanwhile, Brazil is one of the roughly two dozen countries that run a trade deficit with the United States, while almost all other countries targeted by Trump\u2019s tariff measures post large surpluses.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere will be no Tariff if Brazil, or companies within your Country, decide to build or manufacture product within the United States and, in fact, we will do everything possible to get approvals quickly, professionally, and routinely\u2014in other words, in a matter of weeks,\u201d Trump wrote.<\/em><\/p>\n

Following Friday\u2019s police raid, Bolsonaro\u2019s son, Senator Fl\u00e1vio Bolsonaro, took to social media to urge Trump to \u201csuspend the 50 percent tariff on Brazilian imports<\/strong> and impose individual sanctions instead.\u201d<\/p>\n

The post was later deleted.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Lula has dismissed<\/a> Trump\u2019s accusations of unfair trade practices as false and denounced Rubio\u2019s visa revocations as improper interference in Brazil\u2019s judiciary.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe interference of one country in another\u2019s justice system is unacceptable and violates the basic principles of respect and sovereignty among nations,\u201d <\/strong><\/em>Lula wrote<\/a> on X.<\/p>\n

\u201cI am certain that no form of intimidation or threat, from anyone, will compromise the most important mission of national powers and institutions, which is to act permanently in defense and preservation of the Democratic Rule of Law.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
