{"id":1549691,"date":"2025-07-29T14:43:05","date_gmt":"2025-07-29T18:43:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bugaluu.com\/news\/?p=1549691"},"modified":"2025-07-29T14:43:05","modified_gmt":"2025-07-29T18:43:05","slug":"job-openings-slide-as-number-of-hires-unexpectedly-plunges","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bugaluu.com\/news\/job-openings-slide-as-number-of-hires-unexpectedly-plunges\/1549691\/","title":{"rendered":"Job Openings Slide, As Number Of Hires Unexpectedly Plunges"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span class=\"field field--name-title field--type-string field--label-hidden\">Job Openings Slide, As Number Of Hires Unexpectedly Plunges <\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"clearfix text-formatted field field--name-body field--type-text-with-summary field--label-hidden field__item\">\n<p>After several consecutive <em>stronger then expected <\/em>job openings reports and one month after the JOLTS report showed an unexpected surge in job vacancies, moments ago the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bls.gov\/news.release\/pdf\/jolts.pdf\">BLS said <\/a>that in June (with its usual one month lag, coming just days before the July nonfarm payrolls report), job openings in the <strong>US dropped to a <em>lower than expected <\/em>7.437 million, down 275K from 7.712 million in May, and below the 7.5 million estimate.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cms.zerohedge.com\/s3\/files\/inline-images\/monthly%20change_1.jpg?itok=pqxeqVWv\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>According to the BLS, the number of job openings decreased in accommodation and food services (-308,000), health care and social assistance (-244,000), and finance and insurance (-142,000). The number of job openings increased in retail trade (+190,000), information (+67,000), and state and local government education (+61,000).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cms.zerohedge.com\/s3\/files\/inline-images\/job%20openings%20table.jpg?itok=uF3yNTza\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>A testament to (what&#8217;s left of DOGE), is that Federal job openings remained near the post-covid cycle lows, rising just 2k from 94K to 96K.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cms.zerohedge.com\/s3\/files\/inline-images\/federal%20govt%20openings%20july%2025.jpg?itok=HrAjQ9lR\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In\u00a0 the context of the broader jobs report, it appears the US labor market may have dodged a bullet because <strong>whereas in March the labor market was almost demand constrained, <\/strong>when there were just 117K more openings than jobs in the US, since then the differential has risen and in June the number of job openings was 422K more than number of employed workers, suggesting the onset of a labor recession has once again been punted.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cms.zerohedge.com\/s3\/files\/inline-images\/job%20openings%20vs%20unemp%20july%2025.jpg?itok=xiU4m8G4\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>As <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/markets\/us-recession-not-imminent-says-new-indicator\">noted previously<\/a>, until this number turns negative &#8211; which it almost did but may have now averted for the foreseeable future &#8211; the US labor market is <strong>not <\/strong>demand constrained, and a <strong>recession has never started <\/strong>in a period when there were more job openings than unemployed workers.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cms.zerohedge.com\/s3\/files\/inline-images\/unemp%20vs%20vacancy%20rate_4.jpg?itok=6675bGkF\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Said otherwise, in June the number of job openings to unemployed was pretty much flat sequentially at 1.1x.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cms.zerohedge.com\/s3\/files\/inline-images\/job%20openings%20to%20unemp%20ratio_2.jpg?itok=PlDgDziE\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>While the job openings data was in line &#8211; the drop was to be expected and the miss was modest &#8211; it was far uglier on the <strong>hiring <\/strong>side where the number of new hires unexpectedly plunged by 261K&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cms.zerohedge.com\/s3\/files\/inline-images\/hires%20plunge.jpg?itok=KUiadopl\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8230; to just 5.204 million, the lowest in a year, and the second lowest since covid, raising questions about the stability of the US labor market. Meanwhile, the number of workers <strong>quitting <\/strong>their jobs &#8211; a sign of confidence in finding a better paying job elsewhere &#8211; also unexpectedly slumped by 128K to 3.142 million, also one of the lowest prints since Covid.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cms.zerohedge.com\/s3\/files\/inline-images\/hires%20and%20quits%20july.jpg?itok=L_T_kTwR\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>How to make sense of this sudden improvement in the labor market?\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It likely has to do with the DOL starting to factor in the collapse in the shadow labor market &#8211; the one dominated by illegal aliens &#8211; and the replacement of illegals with legal, domestic workers.
