{"id":1550121,"date":"2025-07-31T14:20:00","date_gmt":"2025-07-31T18:20:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bugaluu.com\/news\/?p=1550121"},"modified":"2025-07-31T14:20:00","modified_gmt":"2025-07-31T18:20:00","slug":"apple-retreats-in-china-closes-flagship-store-opened-in-2008-amid-iphone-erosion","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bugaluu.com\/news\/apple-retreats-in-china-closes-flagship-store-opened-in-2008-amid-iphone-erosion\/1550121\/","title":{"rendered":"Apple Retreats In China:\u00a0Closes Flagship Store Opened In 2008\u00a0Amid iPhone Erosion"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span class=\"field field--name-title field--type-string field--label-hidden\">Apple Retreats In China:\u00a0Closes Flagship Store Opened In 2008\u00a0Amid iPhone Erosion<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"clearfix text-formatted field field--name-body field--type-text-with-summary field--label-hidden field__item\">\n<p>Whether it&#8217;s the rise of Chinese rivals like Huawei, Xiaomi, and Vivo, the deepening deflation and softening consumer sentiment across China, or the elevated Sino-U.S. trade tensions, Apple is feeling the squeeze in the world&#8217;s largest smartphone market.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>State-run media outlet <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stcn.com\/article\/detail\/2811824.html#:~:text=%E9%89%B4%E4%BA%8E%E5%A4%A7%E8%BF%9E%E7%99%BE%E5%B9%B4%E5%9F%8E%E8%B4%AD%E7%89%A9%E4%B8%AD%E5%BF%83%E5%86%85%E5%A4%9A%E5%AE%B6%E9%9B%B6%E5%94%AE%E5%95%86%E7%9A%84%E7%A6%BB%E5%BC%80%EF%BC%8C%E6%88%91%E4%BB%AC%E5%86%B3%E5%AE%9A%E4%BA%8E8%E6%9C%889%E6%97%A5%E5%85%B3%E9%97%AD%E9%82%A3%E9%87%8C%E7%9A%84%E9%9B%B6%E5%94%AE%E5%BA%97\">Securities Times<\/a> (abbreviated as ST) reports that Apple has, for the first time, <strong>made preparations<\/strong> to close one of its stores in the Chinese market.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;On July 29, Apple China&#8217;s official website showed that the <strong>Apple Store located in Dalian Centennial City Shopping Center will cease operations at 20:00 on August 9 this year<\/strong>,&#8221; ST wrote in an article, adding, &#8220;It is worth mentioning that this is the first time that Apple has closed a directly-operated store in China since it opened its <strong>first directly-operated store in China (Sanlitun, Beijing) on July 19, 2008<\/strong>.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>ST called next month&#8217;s closure of the Apple store a <strong>highly &#8220;unusual move.&#8221;\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/cms.zerohedge.com\/s3\/files\/inline-images\/2025-07-31_08-58-56.png?itok=apTtO-wb\"><\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Apple responded to the outlet by saying the reason for the closure is the &#8220;departure of many retailers in Dalian Centennial City Shopping Center.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>According to Apple&#8217;s website, it operates 41 stores in China, accounting for just under 10% of its more than 530 physical stores worldwide.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The deeper significance of Apple&#8217;s store closure may lie in the latest data from\u00a0research firm IDC, which shows <strong>China&#8217;s smartphone market contracted in the second quarter<\/strong>, with four of the top five brands reporting shipment declines amid weakening consumer sentiment.\u00a0Apple ranked fifth, trailing behind domestic brands\u00a0like Huawei, Xiaomi, and Vivo.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In the quarter through June, data from Canalys showed that Apple&#8217;s pivot toward friendshoring iPhone production from China to India was in full swing. For the first time, India became the largest exporter of smartphones to the U.S., accounting for 44% of shipments. Vietnam was number two.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>ST noted, &#8220;<strong>The Chinese smartphone market is expected to face greater pressure in the second half of the year<\/strong>.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps the closure of the Apple store is the result of a combination of factors. It&#8217;s certainly not a great sign for Tim Cook and company, as domestic brands in the world&#8217;s second-largest economy <strong>continue to erode iPhone market share<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>We suspect the move should be interpreted as a sign of retreat from the Chinese market.
