{"id":1550229,"date":"2025-08-01T00:05:00","date_gmt":"2025-08-01T04:05:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bugaluu.com\/news\/?p=1550229"},"modified":"2025-08-01T00:05:00","modified_gmt":"2025-08-01T04:05:00","slug":"is-trump-hellbent-on-derailing-indias-rise-as-a-great-power","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bugaluu.com\/news\/is-trump-hellbent-on-derailing-indias-rise-as-a-great-power\/1550229\/","title":{"rendered":"Is Trump Hellbent On Derailing India&#8217;s Rise As A Great Power"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span class=\"field field--name-title field--type-string field--label-hidden\">Is Trump Hellbent On Derailing India&#8217;s Rise As A Great Power<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"clearfix text-formatted field field--name-body field--type-text-with-summary field--label-hidden field__item\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/korybko.substack.com\/p\/trump-is-hellbent-on-derailing-indias\"><em>Authored by Andrew Korybko via Substack,<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Trump raged against India on Wednesday in a series of posts\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/TrumpDailyPosts\/status\/1950547380320801137\">announcing<\/a>\u00a0his 25% tariff on its exports on the pretext of its trade barriers and close ties with Russia. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>He then announced an oil deal with Pakistan and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/trump_repost\/status\/1950646639099772935?s=46\">predicted<\/a>\u00a0that \u201cmaybe they&#8217;ll be selling Oil to India some day!\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>His final post described India\u2019s economy as \u201cdead\u201d and claimed that \u201cWe have done very little business with India\u201d <\/strong>despite it being the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ndtv.com\/business-news\/india-remains-the-fastest-growing-economy-morgan-stanley-8806132\">fastest-growing major economy<\/a>\u00a0in the world and bilateral trade amounting to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ustr.gov\/countries-regions\/south-central-asia\/india\">nearly $130 billion<\/a>\u00a0in 2024.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cms.zerohedge.com\/s3\/files\/inline-images\/httpssubstack-post-media.s3.amaz%20-%202025-07-31T115641.739.jpg?itok=tTibA-kE\"><\/a><br \/><strong>India\u2019s Ministry of Commerce &amp; Industry\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/ItsShubhangi\/status\/1950581858288210074\">calmly responded<\/a>\u00a0to Trump\u2019s tariff announcement by reaffirming its commitment to talks and declaring that the state \u201cwill take all steps necessary to secure our national interest\u201d, which likely infuriated him since he probably expected Modi to anxiously call him. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The favorable trade deal that he clinched\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/fact-sheets\/2025\/07\/fact-sheet-president-donald-j-trump-secures-unprecedented-u-s-japan-strategic-trade-and-investment-agreement\/\">with Japan<\/a>\u00a0last week and the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/korybko.substack.com\/p\/von-der-leyen-just-subordinated-the\">totally lopsided one<\/a>\u00a0with the EU that followed emboldened him into playing hardball with India upon thinking that it\u2019ll fall into line too.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The US wants India to open its agricultural and dairy markets, stop its massive import of discounted Russian oil, and rapidly diversify away from Russian military equipment. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Complying with the first demand would be disastrous for the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/timesofindia.indiatimes.com\/business\/india-business\/indias-46-of-agricultural-workforce-contributes-only-18-to-gdp\/articleshow\/115656918.cms\">46% of the Indian workforce<\/a>\u00a0employed in these industries, however, while the second would risk decelerating its economic growth and the third would make its security dependent on the US. The end result would therefore derail India\u2019s rise as a Great Power and turn it into a US vassal.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Trump is hellbent on doing precisely that, which is the continuation of href=\"https:\/\/korybko.substack.com\/p\/russia-gave-voice-to-indias-concerns\">meddling<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/korybko.substack.com\/p\/a-us-commission-dishonestly-put-a\">infowars<\/a>, and dual geopolitical pivots to Bangladesh <\/strong>(whose prior long-serving leader it\u00a0<a in pursuit of this goal or to contain India if it still refuses to concede.<\/p>\n<p>Complementary elements of this pressure campaign include political support for\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/korybko.substack.com\/p\/wapos-indian-assassination-article\">Delhi-designated \u201cKhalistani\u201d separatists-terrorists<\/a>\u00a0and spring 2023\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/korybko.substack.com\/p\/an-indian-professor-shared-some-crucial\">violent ethno-religious unrest<\/a>\u00a0in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/korybko.substack.com\/p\/korybko-to-bloombergs-rebecca-choong\">Manipur<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>If Trump\u2019s tariffs don\u2019t coerce India into becoming a US vassal, which the US would then exploit to coerce concessions from China in advance of its ultimate goal of restoring unipolarity, then he might settle for letting China subordinate India instead as part of the \u201cG2\u201d\/\u201cChimerica\u201d scenario. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Either way, he doesn\u2019t expect India\u2019s rise as a Great Power to continue due to the zero-sum dilemma in which the tariffs
