Ukraine Is At The Center Of Three Interlocking Triangles For Containing Russia<\/span><\/p>\n

These are the 2020 Lublin Triangle (Ukraine, Poland, and Lithuania), the 2022 de facto alliance between Ukraine, Poland, and the UK, and early August\u2019s Odessa Triangle with Romania and Moldova.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

<\/a><\/p>\n

Russia has in recent years consistently accused the West of turning Ukraine into an \u201canti-Russia\u201d for containment purposes, in response to which Putin authorized the ongoing\u00a0special<\/a>\u00a0operation<\/a>. <\/strong>A year and a half before it began, Poland, Lithuania, and Ukraine formed the \u201cLublin Triangle\u201d, which involves military cooperation and\u00a0continues to lurch along<\/a>\u00a0five years after its creation. Exactly one week before the special operation started, the UK, Poland, and Ukraine then formed a\u00a0de facto alliance<\/a>.<\/p>\n

These two triangles facilitated the UK\u2019s efforts to sabotage spring 2022\u2019s peace talks, for which Poland deserves equal blame as explained\u00a0here<\/a>, thus perpetuating the conflict till now. Right after\u00a0the news broke<\/a>\u00a0that Putin and Trump would hold their first in-person meeting since the latter\u2019s return to office, which later took place\u00a0in Anchorage<\/a>, Ukraine announced the formation of another triangle\u00a0with Romania and Moldova<\/a>. Their \u201cOdessa Triangle<\/a>\u201d is thus the third one centered on Ukraine for containing Russia.<\/p>\n

These three interlocking triangles are expected to play significant roles in the post-conflict future. <\/strong><\/p>\n

The first one, the Lublin Triangle, includes Lithuania, which now hosts\u00a0Germany\u2019s first permanent base abroad<\/a>.<\/p>\n

As for the second, it importantly involves the UK, which has always worked to divide-and-rule Europe.<\/p>\n

And lastly, France has a\u00a0base<\/a>\u00a0in Romania and a\u00a0security pact<\/a>\u00a0with Moldova, which could lead to Paris exploiting them as launchpads for strengthening its\u00a0newly reported secret presence in Odessa<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Ukraine\u2019s seven associated partners (five of which are formal while the other two \u2013 Germany and France \u2013 are informal) could therefore either continue funneling arms into the country for prolonging the conflict or continuing Ukraine\u2019s militarization afterwards and\/or prepare to deploy there one day.\u00a0Poland<\/a>, the\u00a0UK<\/a>,\u00a0France<\/a>, and\u00a0Germany<\/a>\u00a0also clinched security pacts with Ukraine all across last year, which this analysis\u00a0here<\/a>\u00a0argues already amount to a form of Article 5-like guarantees.<\/p>\n

As was written, \u201c[Article 5] obligates members to assist those of their allies that come under attack, albeit as each of them \u2018deems necessary\u2019. Although the use of armed force is mentioned, it\u2019s ultimately left to individual members to decide whether to employ this option. Ukraine has arguably enjoyed the benefits of this principle for the past three years despite not being a NATO member since it\u2019s received everything other than troops from the alliance\u201d.<\/em><\/p>\n

It\u2019s therefore moot whether Ukraine ever formally joins NATO since that wouldn\u2019t guarantee that its allies would dispatch troops in its support should another conflict erupt. <\/strong>More realistically, they\u2019d likely only resume and then ramp up the aid that they\u2019re already providing in order to avoid a potentially apocalyptic conflict with Russia. The EU\u2019s rapid militarization coupled with progress on the \u201cmilitary Schengen<\/a>\u201d for facilitating related logistics could create enduring post-conflict threats to Russia\u2019s security.<\/p>\n

From Poland and Romania, Ukraine\u2019s other five partners could therefore station a large number of troops, store lots of military equipment, and possibly continue funneling arms and ammo across the border for either prolonging the conflict or continuing Ukraine\u2019s militarization afterwards. Russia will certainly take these credible threats into consideration when deciding upon the best way to end the conflict in accordance with its national interests as they\u2019ve evolved 3,5 years into the special operation.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
