{"id":1666078,"date":"2026-02-23T09:15:00","date_gmt":"2026-02-23T14:15:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bugaluu.com\/news\/?p=1666078"},"modified":"2026-02-23T09:15:00","modified_gmt":"2026-02-23T14:15:00","slug":"renewables-now-make-up-1-4-of-us-electricity-generation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bugaluu.com\/news\/renewables-now-make-up-1-4-of-us-electricity-generation\/1666078\/","title":{"rendered":"Renewables Now Make Up 1\/4 Of US Electricity Generation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span class=\"field field--name-title field--type-string field--label-hidden\">Renewables Now Make Up 1\/4 Of US Electricity Generation<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"clearfix text-formatted field field--name-body field--type-text-with-summary field--label-hidden field__item\">\n<p><strong>In 2025, the share of renewables in U.S. electricity generation has surpassed 25 percent<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Over the course of the past 20 years, their share has continuously risen from <strong>just 8.6 percent in 2007<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>At the same time, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.statista.com\/chart\/1503\/coal-is-still-americas-predominant-electricity-source\/\">as Statista&#8217;s Kathraina Buchholz details in the infographic below,\u00a0<\/a><strong>coal in electricity generation fell from a share of 49 percent to just 16.4 percent last year<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.statista.com\/chart\/1503\/coal-is-still-americas-predominant-electricity-source\/\" title=\"Infographic: Renewables Now Make up 1\/4 of U.S. Electricity Generation | Statista\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>You will find more infographics at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.statista.com\/chartoftheday\/\">Statista<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p>While Trump administration&#8217;s policies regarding renewable energy and greenhouse gases have yet to show their full effect, experts believe that the sector&#8217;s strong growth as well as efficiency and cost improvements will cause it to expand further \u2013\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.esgdive.com\/news\/international-energy-agency-renewables-solar-wind-trump\/802350\/#:~:text=Waste%20Dive-,IEA%20revises%20down%20US%20renewables%20capacity%20growth%20estimate%20by%20about,compared%20to%20last%20year's%20report.\">albeit slower<\/a>\u00a0\u2013 despite some government funding losses and the end of emission limits.<\/p>\n<p><strong>In 2022, more\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.statista.com\/topics\/1107\/electricity-us\/\">electricity\u00a0<\/a>was generated from renewable sources in the U.S. for the first time over the course of one year than from coal. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>That year,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.statista.com\/topics\/1250\/renewable-energy\/\">renewable energy sources<\/a>\u00a0created more than 900 terawatt-hours of electric power in the country compared to a little over 800 that came from coal.<\/p>\n<p><strong>On a global scale, this change happened last year as renewables\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/articles\/cx2rz08en2po\/\">outweighed coal electricity generation in the second half of 2025.<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Up until 2007, coal accounted for more than 2,000 terawatt hours of electricity in the U.S. before the figure started to declined as\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/SB10001424052702303404704577307524051798192\/\">regulations around fossil fuels<\/a>\u00a0&#8211; limits on carbon-intensity and the emissions of toxic elements like mercury &#8211; tightened. Electricity generation from natural gas gained pace as a result since it produces somewhat less CO2.
