{"id":1666814,"date":"2026-02-27T17:45:00","date_gmt":"2026-02-27T22:45:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bugaluu.com\/news\/?p=1666814"},"modified":"2026-02-27T17:45:00","modified_gmt":"2026-02-27T22:45:00","slug":"altman-pitches-pentagon-on-anthropic-alternative-as-wsj-does-deep-state-concern-trolling-over-grok-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bugaluu.com\/news\/altman-pitches-pentagon-on-anthropic-alternative-as-wsj-does-deep-state-concern-trolling-over-grok-2\/1666814\/","title":{"rendered":"Altman Pitches Pentagon On Anthropic Alternative As WSJ Does Deep-State Concern-Trolling Over Grok"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span class=\"field field--name-title field--type-string field--label-hidden\">Altman Pitches Pentagon On Anthropic Alternative As WSJ Does Deep-State Concern-Trolling Over Grok<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"clearfix text-formatted field field--name-body field--type-text-with-summary field--label-hidden field__item\">\n<p>As today&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/markets\/warai-will-anthropics-clash-hegseth-trigger-historic-software-short-squeeze\">5PM ET deadline looms<\/a>\u00a0for Anthropic to <strong>militarize Claude AI for the Pentagon,\u00a0<\/strong>OpenAI CEO Sam Altman\u00a0waded into the fray &#8211; telling staff on Thursday night that his company is working with the Department of War to see if their models can be used in classified settings in a way that maintains the same safety guardrails that are about to get Anthropic booted from the Pentagon.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cms.zerohedge.com\/s3\/files\/inline-images\/GettyImages-2226499701_487df1-e1754681616881_80.jpg?itok=Jkv60hll\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We are going to see if there is a deal with the DoW that allows our models to be deployed in classified environments and that fits with our principles,&#8221; Altman wrote in a Thursday night note to staff, reported by the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/tech\/ai\/openais-sam-altman-calls-for-de-escalation-in-anthropic-showdown-with-hegseth-03ecbac8?mod=hp_lead_pos1\"><em>Wall Street Journal<\/em><\/a>. &#8220;<strong>We would ask for the contract to cover any use except those which are unlawful or unsuited to cloud deployments<\/strong>, such as<strong> domestic surveillance and autonomous offensive weapons<\/strong>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Altman says he wants to &#8220;try to help de-escalate things,&#8221; aka &#8211; they want to be the ones deeply embedded in the Pentagon&#8217;s most sensitive systems.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2>Red Lines<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Altman says OpenAI understands the government&#8217;s position<\/strong>\u00a0that a private company should not have control over significant national-security issues [laughs in Palantir], but says they have the same issues as Anthropic when it comes to use cases.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We have long believed that AI should not be used for mass surveillance or autonomous lethal weapons, and that humans should remain in the loop for high-stakes automated decisions. These are our main red lines,&#8221; Altman wrote.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;<strong>We believe this dispute isn\u2019t about how AI will be used, but about control<\/strong>. We believe that a<strong> private US company cannot be more powerful than the democratically-elected US government<\/strong>, although companies can have lots of input and influence. Democracy is messy, but we are committed to it.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Altman&#8217;s comments come as\u00a0<strong>things aren&#8217;t looking so good for Anthropic<\/strong>. Earlier Thursday evening, CEO Dario Amodei announced that the company had <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/politics\/national-security\/anthropic-claude-defense-department-update-b17544d9?mod=article_inline\">rejected<\/a> the Department of War&#8217;s demands that it make its technology available for &#8220;all lawful uses,&#8221; which means no mass domestic surveillance or autonomous weapons.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>Yet, the Pentagon&#8217;s Emil Michael<\/strong>\u00a0&#8211; who allegedly as a private citizen Uber exec wanted to\u00a0<strong>spend a million dollars to surveil and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.buzzfeednews.com\/article\/bensmith\/uber-executive-suggests-digging-up-dirt-on-journalists\">dig up dirt<\/a> on journalists who covered Uber\u00a0<\/strong>&#8211; noted that mass surveillance is already illegal under the Fourth Amendment, and insists that &#8220;Anthropic is lying&#8221; because &#8220;he @DeptofWar doesn\u2019t do mass surveillance as that is already illegal. What we are talking about is allowing our warfighters to use AI without having to call @DarioAmodei\u00a0for permission to shoot down an enemy drone swarms that would kill Americans.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>We agree <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/JeffDean?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@JeffDean<\/a>. Let&#8217;s deliver.<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Grok (@grok) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/grok\/status\/2027227359095537935?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">February 27, 2026<\/a><\/p>\n<p>And so, of course,\u00a0<strong>&#8216;ALARMS ARE BEING RAISED&#8217;\u00a0<\/strong>over the prospect, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/politics\/national-security\/elon-musk-xai-grok-security-safety-government-73ab4f6e?mod=breakingnews\">according to<\/a> the\u00a0<em>Wall Street Journal<\/em>, citing the ever-insightful &#8220;people familiar with the matter.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Officials at multiple federal agencies have raised concerns<\/strong> about the safety and reliability of Elon Musk\u2019s xAI artificial-intelligence tools in recent months, highlighting <strong>continuing disagreements within the U.S. government<\/strong> about which AI models to deploy, according to people familiar with the matter.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>The warnings preceded the Pentagon\u2019s decision this week to put xAI at the center of some of the nation\u2019s most sensitive and secretive operations <strong>by agreeing to allow its chatbot Grok to be used in classified settings<\/strong>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>&#8230;<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Senior U.S. officials including at the White House view Anthropic\u2019s outspoken stances on safety and ties to big Democratic donors as potentially making the company too \u201cwoke\u201d to be a reliable provider, people familiar with the matter said. The looser controls on Grok, and Musk\u2019s absolutist stance on free speech, have made it a more attractive choice to the Pentagon.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>&#8230;<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Ed Forst, the top official at the General Services Administration<\/strong>, a procurement arm of the federal government, in recent months <strong>sounded an alarm with White House officials about potential safety issues with Grok<\/strong>, people familiar with the matter said.
