(Andrew Harnik\/Getty Images)<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Target announced Friday that every cereal it sells, including national brands, must exclude synthetic colors by the end of May.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Health and Human Services spokesman Andrew Nixon told The Daily Signal the move will \u201csupport healthier options for American families.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re encouraged to see companies listening to parents and taking voluntary steps to clean up ingredients in the foods they sell,\u201d Nixon said. \u201c<strong>Secretary Kennedy has been clear that families deserve transparency and the ability to make informed choices about what they\u2019re feeding their children<\/strong>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Target is one of the first national retailers to\u00a0remove synthetic colors\u00a0across an entire grocery category. Food companies General Mills and\u00a0Kraft Heinz\u00a0have agreed to remove artificial colors from products in the United States by 2027,\u00a0but Target has instituted a faster timeline.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<strong>It\u2019s great to see Target take the lead on the MAHA front with food dyes<\/strong>,\u201d said Jay Richards, at the Heritage Foundation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is a clear response to market signals from not only federal action but to consumers, who are waking up to the weird stuff in so much of our food. Let\u2019s hope Target\u2019s competitors get the message as well.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This comes after the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/fda\">Food and Drug Administration<\/a>\u00a0came under fire for reportedly retreating from plans to ban artificial food dyes, a key goal of the MAHA movement.<\/p>\n<p>The FDA\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/news-events\/press-announcements\/fda-takes-new-approach-no-artificial-colors-claims\">announced<\/a>\u00a0in early February that food companies would be able to label their products as containing \u201cno artificial colors\u201d as long as they don\u2019t use petroleum-based dyes.<\/p>\n<p>FDA Commissioner Dr. Marty Makary pushed back on the report as \u201camusing fake news.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<strong>The FDA is moving full steam ahead,<\/strong>\u201d he said.(se<\/p>\n<p>In an interview with The Daily Signal on Dec. 9, Makary said he has seen a \u201ctremendous amount of support in the food industry for our action to call for the removal of all nine petroleum-based food dyes from the U.S. food supply.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He said he\u2019s saying an awareness about the dangers of food dyes that America has not seen before.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe again have to listen to parents; we have to listen to the American people,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd when they say that they have seen their kids engage in aggressive behavior or attention deficit disorder behavior, they remove all petroleum-based food dyes completely from that food supply and the kids\u2019 behavior improves or changes, and then a year down the road they\u2019re reintroduced to the petroleum-based food dyes and the behavior regresses\u2014those are data points.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<strong>We\u2019ve got a randomized controlled trial of artificial petroleum-based dyes, and it did not\u2014it was not favorable<\/strong>,\u201d Makary continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt suggested that it\u2019s involved in behavioral disorders in children, specifically ADHD.
