AI ‘Vibe Coding’ Could Put Ethereum Roadmap Ahead Of Schedule: Vitalik Buterin<\/span><\/p>\n

Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin says an experiment that used artificial intelligence to prototype the blockchain\u2019s roadmap out to 2030 in just a few weeks could have lessons for developers.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is quite an impressive experiment. Vibe-coding the entire 2030 roadmap within weeks,\u201d <\/strong><\/em>Buterin\u00a0posted<\/a>\u00a0to X on Saturday after a developer made a\u00a0bet<\/a>\u00a0with Buterin in February that one person could use AI to code a reference implementation of the blockchain\u2019s roadmap.<\/p>\n

<\/a><\/p>\n

Buterin added that AI is \u201cmassively accelerating coding\u201d and that people \u201cshould be open to the possibility that the Ethereum roadmap will finish much faster than people expect, at a much higher standard of security than people expect.\u201d<\/p>\n

Vibe coding<\/a>\u00a0is where AI creates the code for an application, allowing developers to quickly create software. The practice has become more popular as AI models have improved at coding; however, some warn that AI-generated code can be insecure.<\/p>\n

Buterin says AI code would have \u201ccritical bugs\u201d<\/h2>\n

Buterin said that there were \u201cmassive caveats\u201d to using AI, as the speed at which the code was written means it \u201calmost certainly has lots of critical bugs, and probably in some cases \u2018stub\u2019 versions of a thing where the AI did not even try making the full version.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBut six months ago, even this was far outside the realm of possibility, and what matters is where the trend is going,\u201d<\/strong><\/em> he added.<\/p>\n

Buterin cautioned that, instead of focusing on speed, more emphasis should be placed on security.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cThe right way to use it is to take half the gains from AI in speed, and half the gains in security: generate more test-cases, formally verify everything, make more multi-implementations of things.\u201d<\/p>\n

He said that he was personally excited about the possibility that bug-free code, \u201clong considered an idealistic delusion,\u201d will finally become first possible and \u201cthen a basic expectation.\u201d<\/p>\n

Buterin has been active commenting on the\u00a0recently released roadmap<\/a>\u00a0from the Ethereum Foundation, \u201cStrawmap,\u201d which outlines all upgrades planned for the next four years.\u00a0<\/p>\n

He has previously proposed plans to make Ethereum\u00a0quantum-resistant<\/a>\u00a0and on Sunday said that account abstraction, or smart accounts, would \u201chappen within a year.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
