Hungarian Foreign Minister P\u00e9ter Szijj\u00e1rt\u00f3 has condemned remarks by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky that Budapest says amounted to a threat against Prime Minister Viktor Orb\u00e1n.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Responding to comments made during a press briefing in Kyiv on Thursday, Szijj\u00e1rt\u00f3 said the statement was \u201cbeyond every limit\u201d and reflected what he described as \u201cthe kind of \u2018culture\u2019 coming from Kyiv.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cThis is the man Brussels admires and the country they want to fast-track into the European Union,\u201d Szijj\u00e1rt\u00f3 said. <\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cNo one can threaten Hungary or its prime minister. No one can blackmail us just because we refuse to pay the price of Ukraine\u2019s war and refuse to accept higher energy prices because of Ukraine.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Zelensky had been speaking to compatriots about the proposed \u20ac90 billion European funding package for Ukraine, and warned that a single EU leader should not block the measure, widely interpreted as meaning Viktor Orb\u00e1n.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe hope that in the European Union, one person will not block the 90 billion [euros]. Otherwise, we will give this person\u2019s address to the armed forces, to our guys, let them call him and talk to him in their own language,\u201d<\/strong><\/em> Zelensky said.<\/p>\n

The Patriots for Europe group in the European Parliament\u00a0also criticized the comments<\/a>, saying that \u201cstatements suggesting intimidation or threats of violence are incompatible with democratic principles and with the spirit of mutual respect that should guide relations between partners.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

The group noted that EU member states have already provided approximately \u20ac200 billion in support to Ukraine and said such rhetoric was difficult to reconcile with Ukraine\u2019s ambition to join the European Union.<\/p>\n

Tensions escalated further after Orb\u00e1n responded on social media, declaring that Hungary would restore energy flows through the Druzhba oil pipeline by force, if necessary.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere will be no deals, no compromise. We will break the Ukrainian oil blockade by force. Hungary\u2019s energy will soon flow again through the Friendship pipeline,\u201d <\/strong>Orb\u00e1n wrote.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cPresident Zelensky\u2019s threats are not about me. He is threatening Hungary. Unfortunately for him, he cannot stop me from protecting Hungarian families,\u201d he added.<\/em><\/p>\n

Several Members of the European Parliament stood in support of Hungary following the remarks.<\/p>\n

\u201cLet me remind you that Hungary decided to take this step not out of some whim or bad mood, but in response to Ukraine halting the transit of oil to Hungary via the Druzhba pipeline,\u201d\u00a0noted<\/a>\u00a0Polish MEP Ewa Zaj\u0105czkowska-Hernik, affiliated with the right-wing Confederation. \u201cBecause of this, fuel prices in Hungary have risen, and Prime Minister Orb\u00e1n is simply standing firm in defense of his citizens.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cZelensky has long been making a mistake by allowing himself to be used by the European Union to cooperate with Von der Leyen and the Brussels troop in the massive interference in the Hungarian election campaign,\u201d\u00a0<\/strong><\/em>added<\/a>\u00a0Spain\u2019s Vox MEP Hermann Tertsch. \u201cIt\u2019s very likely that their plan will backfire.\u201d<\/p>\n

Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico also weighed in late on Thursday. In a video posted on social media, Fico expressed \u201cfull solidarity\u201d with his Hungarian counterpart, and intimated that \u201cif the Ukrainian president continues like this, it may be that other EU member states will also block the \u20ac90 billion loan.\u201d<\/p>\n

He further urged key members of the European Commission and European Parliament to \u201cdistance themselves\u201d from what he called Zelensky\u2019s \u201coutrageous blackmailing statements.\u201d<\/p>\n
