Biden Tells Majority Black Crowd: ‘I’m A Hell Of A Lot Smarter Than Most Of You’<\/span><\/p>\n

Former President Joe Biden made a rare public appearance Friday and drew criticism over what some observers described as a racially insensitive remark.\u00a0<\/p>\n

<\/a><\/p>\n

Speaking at the funeral of civil rights leader Rev. Jesse Jackson,<\/strong> Biden told attendees \u2014 including\u00a0prominent civil rights figures and other notable guests \u2014\u00a0\u201cI\u2019m a hell of a lot smarter than\u00a0most of\u00a0you.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Biden made the comment during a\u00a0roughly 20-minute\u00a0speech<\/a>\u00a0honoring Jackson while recounting a story about his childhood and how he was mocked for having a stutter.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cI,\u00a0as a kid, was a\u00a0relatively good\u00a0athlete\u00a0and\u00a0pretty good\u00a0student, but I stuttered<\/strong>\u00a0\u2014 to talk\u00a0like that,\u201d\u00a0Biden said, while mimicking his childhood stutter. <\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

The crowd responded with laughter.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cNow, if I told you all\u00a0earlier,\u00a0when I was a kid,\u00a0I had a cleft palate or club foot,\u00a0none of\u00a0you\u00a0would have laughed,\u201d Biden continued. <\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cBut\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0okay to laugh\u00a0at\u00a0stuttering.\u00a0I\u2019m\u00a0not being\u00a0critical of\u00a0you,\u00a0but\u00a0think about it.\u00a0It\u2019s\u00a0the one place where people think\u00a0you\u2019re\u00a0stupid.\u00a0Oh, really?\u00a0I\u2019m\u00a0a hell of a\u00a0lot smarter than\u00a0most of\u00a0you.\u201d\u00a0<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

Biden then added,\u00a0\u201cAll kidding\u00a0aside, it\u00a0makes you feel\u00a0really\u00a0small.\u00a0It makes you feel\u00a0really small.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

On X, some conservative critics pointed out that Biden made the remark while speaking at the funeral of a civil rights leader before a crowd that included several\u00a0well-known\u00a0black leaders and public figures.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Among those in attendance were former President Barack Obama, Chicago Mayor Brandon\u00a0Johnson\u00a0and former Vice President Kamala Harris.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

Other notable\u00a0black\u00a0figures present included filmmaker and actor Tyler Perry, leftist activist Cornel West, NBA Hall of Famer Isiah\u00a0Thomas\u00a0and singer Jennifer Hudson.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Several other political figures also attended the funeral, including former President Bill Clinton, twice-failed presidential candidate Hillary Clinton,\u00a0Illinois Gov. J. B.\u00a0Pritzker\u00a0and California Gov. Gavin Newsom.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Notably, Gavin Newsom also came under fire last week after telling a crowd in Atlanta \u2014 a\u00a0predominantly\u00a0black\u00a0city \u2014 that he was \u201cjust like you\u201d because he had received a below-average SAT score.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
