{"id":768877,"date":"2022-06-20T17:52:12","date_gmt":"2022-06-20T21:52:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bugaluu.com\/news\/edelman-ceo-on-gun-safety-2nd-amendment-is-just-kind-of-an-excuse-for-delaying\/768877\/"},"modified":"2022-06-20T17:52:12","modified_gmt":"2022-06-20T21:52:12","slug":"edelman-ceo-on-gun-safety-2nd-amendment-is-just-kind-of-an-excuse-for-delaying","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bugaluu.com\/news\/edelman-ceo-on-gun-safety-2nd-amendment-is-just-kind-of-an-excuse-for-delaying\/768877\/","title":{"rendered":"Edelman CEO on gun safety: 2nd Amendment \u2018is just kind of an excuse for delaying\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"ftpimagefix\" style=\"float:left\"><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aol.com\/finance\/edelman-ceo-gun-safety-2nd-172453020.html\" rel=\"noopener\"><\/a><\/div>\n<p>The recent wave of mass shootings across the country has renewed partisan debates over gun control and the scope of the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/constitution.congress.gov\/constitution\/amendment-2\/#:~:text=A%20well%20regulated%20Militia%2C%20being,Arms%2C%20shall%20not%20be%20infringed.\" rel=\"noopener\">Second Amendment<\/a>, which reads: &#8220;A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Edelman CEO Richard Edelman was one of 200 U.S. CEOs recently <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/s3.documentcloud.org\/documents\/22056602\/ceo-letter-on-guns.pdf\" rel=\"noopener\">signed a letter<\/a> demanding that Congress take action on gun safety in the form of new legislation.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This is 10 years after Sandy Hook, and status quo just won&#8217;t do,&#8221; Edelman recently said on Yahoo Finance Live (video above). &#8220;Somehow, falling back on the rights of citizens to bear arms is just kind of an excuse for delaying what is inevitably in the interests of the communities.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The corporate leaders \u2014 including those of Lyft, Dick\u2019s Sporting Goods, and Unilever \u2014 called the gun violence epidemic \u201ca public health crisis,&#8221; according to <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/2022\/06\/09\/ceos-senate-gun-legislation-letter\" rel=\"noopener\">Axios<\/a>.<\/p>\n<figure><figcaption>People gather at Riverfront Park for the May Day Second Amendment rally in Salem, Oregon, U.S., May 1, 2021. REUTERS\/Alisha Jucevic<\/figcaption><div class=\"photo-credit\">Alisha Jucevic \/ reuters<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>&#8220;All of this points to a clear need for action: the Senate must take urgent action to pass bold gun safety legislation as soon as possible in order to avoid more death and injury,&#8221; the letter stated.<\/p>\n<p>A few days after Edelman spoke, the Senate <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2022\/06\/12\/1104433332\/gun-control-senate-deal\" rel=\"noopener\">reached an agreement<\/a> for gun-related measures aimed at preventing future shootings akin to what recently happened in Buffalo, New York, and Uvalde, Texas. However, the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.953mnc.com\/2022\/06\/18\/congress-still-mulling-over-the-language-on-gun-control-legislation\/\" rel=\"noopener\">specific language<\/a> of any potential legislation has yet to be written.<\/p>\n<p>A majority of Americans (59%) support prioritizing legislation to control gun violence versus 35% who believe it&#8217;s more important to protect gun rights, according to a recent <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/maristpoll.marist.edu\/polls\/npr-pbs-newshour-marist-national-poll-gun-violence-in-the-united-states-june-2022\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Marist Poll<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>&#8216;I believe in the Second Amendment&#8217;<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Edelman stressed that he and his fellow chief executives are not seeking to ban all weapons.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo be clear, what [the letter] said was nothing specific,\u201d Edelman said. \u201cWe want something like a red flag law, or we want some limitation on age, or we want something that limits high-capacity ammunition \u2014 all of these should be on the table. It\u2019s up to Congress to make the specifics. But we need gun safety.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He added that \u201cI believe in the Second Amendment, but I want to be sure that guns are used appropriately.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Current proposals being floated include expanding background checks, expanding red flag laws, and raising the minimum age to buy an assault rifle to 21. REUTERS\/Evelyn Hockstein<\/figcaption><div class=\"photo-credit\">Evelyn Hockstein \/ reuters<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<h2><strong>Finding a middle ground<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>While Edelman <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/finance.yahoo.com\/news\/edelman-ceo-pushback-against-wokeness-121227813.html\" rel=\"noopener\">has previously been vocal<\/a> about corporate leaders finding a balance between activism and appeasing stakeholders, he said this letter was about messaging to employees and elected leaders.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thought it was interesting the group of CEOs who did sign on,\u201d Edelman said. \u201cIt was a mix of tech companies, younger companies, clothing companies, consumer products companies, some service companies like my own. It&#8217;s a pretty unanimous kind of approach. And corporate America is saying, come on, Senate, do your job. It&#8217;s time. Find a middle ground. Even if we have to settle for less than optimal from some sides or other \u2014 get to legislation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to Edelman\u2019s <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.edelman.com\/sites\/g\/files\/aatuss191\/files\/2022-01\/2022%20Edelman%20Trust%20Barometer%20FINAL_Jan25.pdf\" rel=\"noopener\">2022 Trust Barometer<\/a>, \u201cmore than 8 in 10 respondents want CEOs to be the face of change, leading on policy, not on politics.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/media.zenfs.com\/en\/aol_yahoo_finance_433\/5bea3475cfec604981d696a139120c51\" alt=\"Edelman's Trust Barometer shows that CEOs are expected to inform policy, not politics. (Chart: Edelman)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>For Edelman, signing a public letter calling for gun legislation does exactly that.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNow, there can be others who are CEOs who contact their [congresspeople] or senators personally, make contributions personally \u2014 that&#8217;s a perfectly plausible approach,\u201d Edelman said.  \u201cI&#8217;m not saying that every company should use its platform to advance societal issues writ big, whether it&#8217;s abortion, voting rights, or gun control. But if you are, as a citizen, convinced that this is the right thing, at least as a CEO contact your legislator and say, it&#8217;s time to pass this legislation. Do it privately. That&#8217;s fine too.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The question for CEOs, he added, amounts to: \u201cIs it the right thing to do as a public advocate, which I did yesterday on signing on to the letter, or is it better to do privately with your congressman and senator?
