In early 1940s, Apurba Kumar Roy (Apu) (Soumitra Chatterjee) is an unemployed graduate (completed study up to the intermediate science) living in a rented room at Tala, Calcutta. Despite his teacher’s advice to go for higher studies, he is unable to do so because he cannot afford it.
