Released on December 20, 1946, “It’s a Wonderful Life” did only so-so at the box office. Because the movie cost $2.3 million to make—a lot of money just after the war—Liberty Films ended up losing $525,000 on the deal. Capra’s company was sold to Paramount Pictures in 1947.
