The case basically lines up flush with the fires edges so there’s no extra area around the sides/edges to help protect the sides of the fire tablet, they are basically just open. Which means you’ll still easily hit/accidentally bump the power or volume buttons when using it and won’t provide much protection for the sides if you drop your fire.
