Florian is a unisex given name borrowed from the ancient Roman name Florianus. The name is derived from Florus, from Latin flōrus (originally “yellow, blond”, later “flowering”), related to flāvus (“yellow, blond”); compare also Romanian flor (“blond, with blond hair”). In spite of that, by popular etymology, it is often linked to flōs (“flower”; genitive singular flōris).
