Following a 5–3–1 record in 1959, Eliot opted to retire as Illinois’ head football coach. Illinois hired California head coach Pete Elliott as Eliot’s replacement in 1960. With the Illini, his record was 31–34–1, earning a Big Ten title and Rose Bowl victory over Washington during the 1963 season.
