Ramsay Hunt syndrome is rare and caused by the same virus as chickenpox. According to the Mayo Clinic, facial paralysis is a symptom of Ramsay Hunt disease, which occurs when a virus — called varicella zoster — infects the facial nerve. The symptoms usually resolve after treatment with medications, but the paralysis can be permanent, according to the Mayo Clinic.
