Born Leslie Weinstein on October 22, 1945, West grew up in the New York City area and was a founding member of the Vagrants, a blue-eyed soul garage band of the mid-1960s, Rolling Stone reported. Mountain played during the second day of the Woodstock Festival in 1969, appearing between Canned Heat and the Grateful Dead, the magazine reported.
