Approached from a long tree-lined avenue, Loughton is a most impressive three-storey over-basement house, built in 1777, on the site of a seventeenth-century house. Impressive structural additions were completed in 1853 by the renowned architects James & George Pain – most notably the grand cantilever staircase in the oval reception hall.
