In February 1999, Adnan Masud Syed, Lee’s ex-boyfriend, was arrested and charged with her murder. The following year, he was convicted of first-degree murder ; the conviction was based largely on testimony provided by an acquaintance of Syed and call records for Syed’s mobile phone. The decision was upheld by the Maryland Court of Appeals.
