INEOS buys into F1 champ Mercedes in latest sports venture

British billionaire Jim Ratcliffe has added to his sports investments by buying a third of Formula One champion Mercedes through his chemical giant INEOS, the British-based team said Friday. INEOS was already a main sponsor of Mercedes but now owns an equal part in the team with Daimler, whose shareholding has reduced from 60%, and Toto Wolff, the team principal and chief executive. Bayer Leverkusen join race to sign Brandon Williams on loan from Manchester United

Bayer Leverkusen have joined the race for Brandon Williams after Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer revealed he would consider a January move for the full-back. The Daily Telegraph revealed in January that Southampton wanted Williams, 20, and they retain an interest as Ralph Hasenhuttl looks to bolster his defence when the transfer window opens in a fortnight. Williams has also attracted interest from clubs abroad and Leverkusen, who are top of the Bundesliga, are among those who want him on a minimum six-month loan. Leverkusen signed Colombia right-back Santiago Arias on a season-long loan from Atletico Madrid in the summer but he suffered a horrific leg break in October, leaving Peter Bosz looking at options. Williams has played mainly at left-back since breaking into the United first-team squad last season, although he is also comfortable at right-back which has made him attractive to clubs in the market for full-back cover. He has only started in two EFL Cup matches this season and was not in the squad for the Premier League win over Sheffield United on Thursday night. Solskjaer says he will be considered for a loan when the market opens. “That’s something we’ll look at in January but we highly rate Brandon,” Solskajer said. “Whoever’s interested, they’re not wrong. Brandon has done really well since he came into the team. He had a slow start to the season for different reasons. “I think he is now coming back to more like himself. I’ve enjoyed him more in training, he’s played a couple of 23s games and has been more involved.” Solskjaer bought Alex Telles before the last transfer deadline, with Luke Shaw also established as a first-team left-back, leaving opportunities limited for Williams. On the other flank, Aaron Wan-Bissaka has been a regular starter for United all season. Leverkusen have looked at Premier League right-backs before, showing interest in Arsenal’s Hector Bellerin and Liverpool’s Neco Williams before he signed a new deal at Anfield.

Fulham-Newcastle United Preview

Steve Bruce labelled Fulham’s Aleksandar Mitrovic a “cult hero” as he revealed he would have loved the chance to manage the former Newcastle United forward. Fulham and Mitrovic travel to St James’ Park on Saturday, but the Serbia international – who scored 26 times in the Championship last season – has not found the net in the Premier League since scoring twice against Leeds United in September. Mitrovic spent two-and-a-half seasons with Newcastle before moving to Fulham, and Bruce wished he had got the chance to work with the former Anderlecht man.

Arsenal-Everton Preview

Mikel Arteta insists he feels the support at Arsenal, but acknowledges the club have gone through a challenging year. The Gunners have taken only 14 points from 13 Premier League matches this season, their lowest tally at this stage of a campaign since 1974-75 – since Arteta took charge last December, Arsenal have won more cup matches (14 of 17) than league games (13 of 33). Arteta’s side sit 15th and the Spaniard is in desperate need of a positive result when Arsenal visit his former team Everton on Saturday, with the Toffees’ boss Carlo Ancelotti also nearing his one-year anniversary.
