Oisin Murphy keen to crown champion season with first strike at Breeders’ Cup on Kameko
Oisin Murphy can celebrate a second domestic jockey’s title on Saturday by winning his first race at the Breeders’ Cup on Kameko in the Mile, one of the highlights of what the American’s bill as racing’s ‘World Championships’ at Keeneland in Kentucky. Few sporting events, big or small, have been left unaffected by the pandemic this year and the 37th Breeders’ Cup proved no exception on Friday when Dermot Weld had to find a replacement jockey, Colin Keane, for Tarnawa in the Turf after an asymptomatic Christophe Soumillon tested positive for Covid. He was the only one of the 55 jockeys riding at the meeting to throw up a positive. Murphy, 25, may have other things than William Buick’s late title challenge on his mind after this weekend as he fights to clear his name in France following a failed drugs test, but he is a world-class jockey and it is surely only a matter of time before he strikes at this meeting. The journey on Kameko has not been quite as smooth sailing as it was on Roaring Lion who carried all before him in 2018; joy interlaced with frustration probably sums it up best. After winning the 2,000 Guineas back in June, Kameko failed to get the trip in the Derby, was a desperately unlucky fourth in the Sussex, fourth in the International but regained the winning thread in the Joel Stakes last time out. The left-handed turns should not be a problem and his draw in stall two is helpful providing he gets away quick or Circus Maximus, on the rail, goes forward. If he does the normal British thing and flops out of the stall half asleep Murphy might be required to prove his brilliance.
