Dustin Johnson promised his rivals a long year in his shadow after extending his incredible run of form with his second Saudi international in three years. The world No 1’s two-shot victory over Justin Rose – the fast-finishing Englishman showing a welcome resurgence following a year in the doldrums – made it three wins, three seconds, a third, a sixth and two other top 12s in his last 10 starts. It is incredible to go back to the start of this stretch and see that in his immediate event prior he shot a pair of 80s. Three events later, he prevailed in TPC Boston, a fortnight after that he collected $15m as FedEx Cup champion, then came his ridiculously overdue major breakthrough at the Masters and now comes this, a 26th global title. With a commanding 3.5pt lead at the top of the rankings there can be no question who is the best player in the game and although it might be slightly risky for the 38-year-old to christen himself King of Saudi, his results sheet in the controversial European Tour tournament is undeniable. Since its inception in 2019, Johnson has gone 1-2-1. Little wonder, therefore, that Johnson feels revved up for 2021 and that he is evidently finding it difficult to envisage anyone overtaking him in the pecking order. “I feel like I’m playing very solid, I’m seeing a lot of the same things each and every week with my game,” he said. “I’m pleased with where it’s at and where it going and long as I can keep this up, I think I’ll still be there [at world No 1] at the end of the year, for sure.” Johnson is hardly the most outspoken of superstars, so, for him, these comments can count as a warning to the rest. In truth, they will be fully aware of his dominance at the moment simply by looking at the almost nonchalant manner of triumphs such as this.
