Brighton XI vs Barnsley – Predicted lineup and team news
Brighton XI vs Barnsley – Predicted lineup and team news
Brighton travel to Barnsley on Tuesday, aiming to put a frustrating weekend behind them and begin a meaningful Carabao Cup run.
After throwing away a two-goal lead in the dying moments against Tottenham on Saturday, a convincing performance against League One opposition is needed to restore confidence and momentum.
The Seagulls also have a point to prove in this competition. The club has not progressed beyond the fourth round of the EFL Cup since 1979, an incredibly poor record that they will be desperate to change.
Therefore, manager Fabian Hurzeler will be keen for his side to take this opportunity seriously and build a platform for a potential cup run.
Brighton XI vs Barnsley – Predicted lineup and team news
Brighton team news
Fabian Hurzeler is expected to make wholesale changes from the side that drew with Tottenham. This provides a chance for experienced players like James Milner and promising youngsters like Brajan Gruda and Georgios Tzimas to impress.
The manager’s options are limited by injuries, however. He remains without long-term absentees Adam Webster and Solly March, while Jack Hinshelwood has also been ruled out for the long term with a ligament injury. Jason Steele is tipped to deputise for Bart Verbruggen in goal.
Brighton predicted Lineup
Brighton predicted XI: Steele; Wieffer, Boscagli, Kadioglu, Veltman; Coppola, Gruda; Ayari, Milner, Gomez; Tzimas.
When is Barnsley vs Brighton?
The Carabao Cup fixture will be played at Oakwell on Tuesday, 23 September 2025, with kick-off scheduled for 7:45 pm BST.

Premier League side Brighton & Hove Albion travel to Oakwell on Tuesday for a third-round Carabao Cup tie against League One outfit Barnsley.

Team News
Barnsley
Manager Conor Hourihane is without Georgie Gent, Fabio Jalo, and Marc Roberts due to injury. He is expected to rotate his squad following their weekend league defeat at Blackpool, giving opportunities to a number of fringe players.
Brighton
Fabian Hurzeler will make significant changes to his side and is dealing with a number of injuries. He remains without long-term absentees Adam Webster and Solly March, and has now also lost Jack Hinshelwood to a long-term ligament injury sustained against Bournemouth.
Form
Barnsley
The Tykes have had a decent start to their League One campaign, winning six of their ten games. However, their confidence took a knock with a 1-0 defeat at Blackpool on Saturday. The club also has a poor record in this stage of the competition, having failed to progress to the fourth round since 2009.
Brighton
The Seagulls are struggling for defensive consistency, with just one clean sheet in six matches this season. Their vulnerabilities were exposed at the weekend when they threw away a two-goal lead to draw 2-2 with Tottenham. Brighton also have a dreadful history in the EFL Cup, having last reached the quarter-finals in 1979.
Predicted Lineups
Barnsley predicted XI: Cooper; Ogbeta, Earl, Shepherd, Watson; Connell, Bland; McGoldrick, Phillips, Vickers; Keillor-Dunn.
Brighton predicted XI: Steele; Wieffer, Boscagli, Kadioglu, Veltman; Coppola, Gruda; Ayari, Milner, Gomez; Tzimas.

Burnley vs Cardiff City – Match Preview and Team News
Burnley vs Cardiff City – Match Preview and Team News
Burnley will be looking for a welcome respite from their Premier League struggles on Tuesday when they host League One side Cardiff City in the third round of the Carabao Cup.
Scott Parker’s side have found wins hard to come by in the top flight. However, they boast a remarkable nine-match winning streak at home against the Bluebirds, a record they will be confident of extending.
Cardiff arrive at Turf Moor looking to bounce back from a defeat that ended their own 10-game unbeaten run.

Team News
Burnley
Scott Parker’s selection is limited by a number of injuries. He will be without long-term absentees Zeki Amdouni and Jacob Bruun Larsen. In addition, defenders Connor Roberts and Jordan Beyer are also sidelined. The manager is expected to rotate his squad heavily for the cup tie.
Cardiff City
Cardiff manager Brian Barry-Murphy is expected to freshen up his side following their first defeat in 11 games at the weekend. The League One outfit have few major injury concerns and may hand opportunities to players who impressed in the earlier rounds of the cup, including former Arsenal defender Calum Chambers.
Form
Burnley
The Clarets have found life difficult back in the Premier League, with just one win from their opening five matches. Their latest result was a frustrating 1-1 draw with Nottingham Forest, which extended their winless run to three games. However, both of their victories this season have come at Turf Moor, a ground where they have an incredible historical record against Cardiff.
Cardiff City
The Bluebirds’ impressive 10-game unbeaten run came to a halt with a 3-1 home defeat to Bradford City on Saturday. Despite that setback, Barry-Murphy’s side have made a strong start to their League One promotion push. They have also progressed comfortably through two rounds of this competition, scoring six goals in the process.
Predicted Lineups
Burnley predicted XI: Weiss; Laurent, Ekdal, Humphreys, Walker; Mejbri, Luis; Hartman, Edwards, Anthony; Broja.
Cardiff City predicted XI: Turner; Ng, Lawlor, Chambers, Bagan; Mafico, Colwill, Nyakuhwa; Robinson, Davies, Salech.

England v Canada: Rugby World Cup final guide
A capacity crowd at Twickenham is expected for Saturday’s final [Getty Images]
England and Canada will meet on Saturday in the World Cup final as the two highest ranked teams in women’s rugby union chase the sport’s biggest prize.
World number one outfit and tournament hosts England overcame France to reach their seventh successive final.
England, who have been fully professional since 2019, are bidding to win the World Cup for a third time and are targeting a first title since beating Canada in the 2014 final.
The Red Roses have won a world record 32 successive Test matches and go into the final as favourites.
They are also seeking to make up for the heartbreak of the 2022 final where their 30-match winning streak was ended in a 34-31 loss to New Zealand.
Canada outclassed defending champions New Zealand on Friday to reach their second final.
They are not professional and set up a £530,000 (C$1m) fundraising drive – titled Mission: Win Rugby World Cup – to help them prepare for the tournament.
The final, which kicks off at 16:00 BST, will be shown live on BBC One, BBC iPlayer and the BBC Sport website and app.

Where is the final being played?
The final will be held at Twickenham in front of what is set to be a record crowd for a one-off women’s rugby match.
Tickets for the 82,000-capacity Allianz Stadium sold out a month ago, with the attendance therefore set to beat the record of 58,498 from when England played France in the 2023 Six Nations.

What does it mean to be in a World Cup final?
England back row Alex Matthews, one of four players in the squad from the 2014 World Cup winning team, said: “This tournament feels different because of the amount of coverage, the number of fans supporting us each week, messages of support we receive daily and with it being at home in England.
“The support has been on another level and it’s only going to continue to rise beyond the conclusion of this World Cup. We can’t thank the supporters enough for their incredible backing.”
England second row Morwenna Talling, who was 12 when England triumphed in France in 2014, said: “It was so inspirational to see female rugby players achieving something with their country.
“We are now in that spotlight and hold a responsibility as Red Roses to inspire young girls and boys to take an interest in our sport, whether watching or playing, and we hope that our sport continues to raise its profile following on from this World Cup.”
England centre Meg Jones, who has been nominated for World Rugby women’s 15s player of the year, added: We’ve had to fight for every second of game time in this tournament. We’ve earned the right to be here.
“To run out at Allianz Stadium, knowing the stories we all carry, the communities we represent, and the history we’re creating — that’s massive. That’s what makes this final week so powerful.”
Who are the star players?
England’s Ellie Kildunne is the face of the tournament, and she bounced back from missing the quarter-final win over Scotland after a concussion injury by delivering in fine style against France.
The full-back hit her stride with two superb tries at Ashton Gate, having only flickered briefly in her two previous outings at this World Cup.
She was also sporting eye-catching cheetah-print footwear from her boot sponsor for the first time, and has been prominent in much of the advertising for the tournament.
Canada standout Sophie de Goede is a rugby rarity as a goal-kicking lock forward, and with 58 points she is the second-highest scorer in the World Cup so far.
The final offers her a chance to go past New Zealand’s Braxton Sorensen-McGee, who has 59 points prior to the third-placed play-off against France that takes place before the final itself.
De Goede’s 20 conversions are the most in the tournament, and the 26-year-old has also kicked one penalty and crossed for three tries.

Who are the captains?
England are captained by Zoe Aldcroft. Born in Scarborough, the 28-year-old can play as a lock but has featured as a blind-side flanker in the past two matches.
She missed the second and third pool stage games, having suffered a knee injury in the win over the United States that opened the tournament on 22 August.
Aldcroft led England to the Women’s Six Nations title earlier this year after taking over the captaincy from Marlie Packer in January.
Canada are led by centre Alex Tessier. This is the 32-year-old’s third World Cup, and she has played for Exeter Chiefs since 2023. Tessier first captained Canada against England in the WXV1 tournament last October.
Why England’s ‘warrior queen’ is the perfect captain
Who are the coaches?
England are coached by former All Blacks boss John Mitchell. The 61-year-old New Zealander worked with the England men’s team’s forwards from 1997 to 2000, and was their defence coach from 2018 to 2021. He succeeded Simon Middleton as head coach of the women’s team in 2023 and has won every game since taking over.
Canada’s head coach is 38-year-old Frenchman Kevin Rouet. He joined the Canada women’s set-up in 2019 as assistant coach and stepped up to succeed Sandro Fiorino in 2022.
Who are the teams’ leading try-scorers?
England have scored 43 tries in the tournament, while Canada have managed 35.
Full-back Julia Schell has scored six tries for Canada, all in an extraordinary 23-minute spell in her side’s opening pool match against Fiji.
Wing Jess Breach has crossed the whitewash six times for England, including a hat-trick in the thumping victory over Samoa. Prop forward Kelsey Clifford has scored five and Kildunne four.
Women’s Rugby World Cup: Who are the leading try-scorers?
England v Canada head-to-head record
England and Canada have faced each other 37 times.
England have won 33 times, Canada three, and there was a 13-13 draw at the 2014 World Cup.
England are on a roll, having won the last 13 meetings between the sides, with Canada’s last win coming in Salt Lake City just over nine years ago.
Notable wins for England over Canada include the 21-9 victory in the 2014 World Cup final, a 26-19 win in the World Cup semi-final in New Zealand in 2022, and the 21-12 result in the teams’ last encounter in Vancouver in WXV1 in October 2024.
Route to the World Cup final
England reached the final with a 35-17 win over France at Ashton Gate, extending their world record winning run to 32 matches.
They had powered past Scotland 40-8 in the quarter-finals, having beaten the United States, Samoa and Australia to win Pool A.
The Red Roses have scored 283 points across their five games and conceded just 42.
Canada reached Twickenham thanks to an enthralling 34-19 win over defending world champions New Zealand in their semi-final.
Prior to this, they won Group B through wins over Fiji, Wales and Scotland before seeing off Australia 46-5 at the quarter-final stage.
Previous Women’s Rugby World Cup winners
There have been nine previous Women’s World Cups but only three nations have lifted the trophy – New Zealand (six times), England (twice) and the United States (once).
England have played in eight finals but only won two of them, in 1994 and 2014.
Canada lost on their only previous appearance in a final, falling to England in 2014.
The United States won the inaugural tournament in Cardiff.

Just how dominant has Commanders DE Dorance Armstrong been in 2025?
When the Washington Commanders signed defensive end Dorance Armstrong in March 2024, most believed it was a familiarity signing for new head coach Dan Quinn and defensive coordinator Joe Whitt Jr. After all, in six seasons with the Dallas Cowboys, Armstrong’s career-high was 8.5 sacks. However, for most of his Dallas tenure, Armstrong was used in a rotational role.
Quinn thought Armstrong’s best football was ahead of him, as Washington signed him to a three-year, $45 million contract. The Commanders were paying Armstrong like a starting defensive end, and he started 15 games during Washington’s magical 12-5 season. He finished last season with five sacks, seven tackles for loss and two forced fumbles. It was a solid year for Armstrong, but Quinn knew Armstrong was capable of more.
All offseason, every NFL analyst and Washington fan said GM Adam Peters needed to trade for a star edge rusher. First, it was Myles Garrett, then Trey Hendrickson. While Peters likely inquired about adding those star edge rushers, the Commanders were never serious contenders. Washington stayed pat, believing Armstrong was in store for a big year and adding future Hall of Famer Von Miller this summer to supplement the pass rush.
Through three games, Armstrong is proving Quinn and Peters right. He has played in 64% of Washington’s defensive snaps, recorded 15 tackles, including four for loss, three sacks and three QB hits. Those numbers don’t tell the entire story about how well Armstrong has played.
According to NFL Pro, Dorance Armstrong is leading the NFL in both total pressures (18) and pressure rate (25%) through 3 weeks.
— Sam Monson (@SamMonsonNFL) September 22, 2025
Armstrong’s pressure rates are among the best in the NFL and he’s doing it every week. He has recorded one sack and multiple pressures in each game this season. Dating back to the playoffs, Armstrong has 6.5 sacks in his last six games. What’s remarkable about Armstrong is that while he’s an eight-year veteran, he’s still only 28 years old.
So, while Washington’s defense still has issues to work out, the pass rush is much better than expected. Armstrong’s quietly dominant play is a primary reason for the Commanders’ pass-rush success. If he continues at his current pace, he will record 17 sacks, doubling his previous high. Those would be All-Pro numbers.
This week, Armstrong and the Commanders face the Atlanta Falcons.

Daniel Jones contract extension: How much will Colts quarterback cost in 2026?
Daniel Jones has been one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL through three games, making him one of the biggest bargains in the league with the 1-year, $14-million contract he signed to compete with Anthony Richardson for the Colts‘ starting job.
That also means Jones will be an unrestricted free agent after this season and leads to the obvious question:
What kind of contract will Daniel Jones receive after this season if he maintains something close to his current pace?
There are three clear comparisons for Jones emerging suddenly as a highly successful quarterback after years of subpar play (salary information from spotrac.com):
Geno Smith, Las Vegas
Contract: 2 years, $75 million, $66.5 million guaranteed
Age when he signed the contract: 35
Per 17 games since 2022: 68.1%, 4,269 yards, 24.5 TDs, 12.8 INTs, 94.9 passer rating, 1 rushing TD
Sam Darnold, Seattle
Contract: 3 years, $100.5 million, $55 million guaranteed
Age when he signed the contract: 28
Per 17 games since 2024: 66.7%, 4,235 yards, 33.2 TDs, 11.9 INTs, 102.8 rating, 1 rushing TD
Baker Mayfield, Tampa Bay
Contract: 3 years, $100 million, $50 million guaranteed
Age when he signed the contract: 29
Per 17 games since 2023: 67.4%, 4,208 yards, 34.5 TDs, 11.9 INTs, 100.6 rating, 2 rushing TDs
How much will Daniel Jones’ next contract be?
These three contracts average between $33.3 million per season and $37.5 million. Mayfield and Darnold got three years, Smith almost certainly getting just two due to his age.
Jones will be 29 next season so a three-year contract seems likely. History for all three is basically a wash. After a bad start to his career, Smith had several years of success in Seattle prior to signing his current contract; Mayfield and Darnold had one, as would Jones.
Jones is completing 71.8% of his passes and on pace for 4,624 yards, 17 touchdowns, 0 INTS, with a 111.7 passer rating and 17 rushing touchdowns. We’ll call it 34 total touchdowns for Jones as his current split is unlikely to continue and that puts him in line with Darnold and Mayfield. Jones is likely to throw some interceptions, bringing his passer rating down making him a very similar quarterback to these three.
Smith isn’t quite as productive and he’s older so let’s say Jones will merit something in the 3 years, $110 million-$120 million range with $60 million guaranteed if he continues to play at this level.

McTominay 18th and Weir 30th in Ballon D'or
Billy Gilmour (left) scored his first senior goal in club football on Monday [Getty Images]
Scott McTominay has been ranked in 18th place in the Ballon D’or list, while fellow Scotland midfielder Caroline Weir was 30th on the women’s ratings.
Paris St-Germain forward Ousmane Dembele took the men’s award, with Barcelona midfielder Aitana Bonmati lifting the women’s for a third year running.
McTominay had been named as Serie A’s player of the year following the 28-year-old’s title-winning debut campaign with Napoli.
He has also made a good start to the current season and set up the winning goal for substitute Lorenzo Lucca in Monday’s 3-2 win over second-bottom Pisa.
Fellow Scotland midfielder Billy Gilmour opened the scoring for Napoli, his strike taking a slight deflection as the 24-year-old grabbed his first-ever goal in senior club football.
Scotland women to host Switzerland in DunfermlineHow best in the world Dembele finally lived up to his potentialBonmati’s journey from hospital bed to record third Ballon d’Or
His previous two senior goals came for Scotland.
Gilmour had been handed his first start of the campaign in place of Stanislav Lobotka after being restricted to three short substitute appearances so far this season.
However, despite his goal, the former Chelsea and Brighton & Hove Albion midfielder found himself replaced with the Slovak after 58 minutes with the sides level at 1-1.
The narrow win means Napoli lead the table by two points from Juventus after four games.
Meanwhile, Real Madrid’s Weir will return to her home city of Dunfermline on 28 October when Scotland host Switzerland in a friendly at East End Park.
The 30-year-old was the first Scottish woman to be nominated for the Ballon D’or.
