Nevada’s NIAA boys basketball state championships wrapped up Saturday with four more champions crowned in the Class 1A through 4A ranks.
Two of the games were one-possession games, including the Class 4A title game where the Clark [Las Vegas, NV] Chargers defeated the Bishop Manogue [Reno, NV] Miners, 56-54. The other nail-biter came in the Class 2A championship game where the Battle Mountain [NV] Longhorns defeated the Needles [CA] Mustangs, 70-67.
Needles is actually located in California near the intersection of the state’s boundaries with both Arizona and Nevada, but it is one of five California schools that chooses to play in the latter’s state association due to its geographic proximity to opponents in southern Nevada.
The other champions from Nevada’s prep ranks include The Meadows School [Las Vegas, NV] – a 59-52 winner over the Fernley [NV] Vaqueros for the Class 3A championship – and the Class 1A champion Smith [NV] Valley Bulldogs who beat the Mineral County [Hawthorne, NV] Serpents, 72-59.
Prior to Saturday’s busy schedule, the Coronado Cougars defeated the Liberty Patriots, 60-55, for the Class 5A title on Friday evening in a battle between two rivals based in Henderson, Nevada.

With Big Ten title clinched and a 21-game winning streak, No. 2 UCLA looks ahead to March
LOS ANGELES (AP) — The final buzzer rang and the party was on inside Pauley Pavilion.
No. 2 UCLA defeated Wisconsin 80-60 on Sunday, wrapping up the program’s first-ever outright league championship with one Big Ten game remaining. Previously, the Bruins shared the Pac-12 title with Oregon in 1998-99.
“I just love these girls so much,” said Lauren Betts, who had 19 points and 14 rebounds. “Winning a game like this, making history on our senior night has got to be one of the most special moments.”
With the band blaring and fans cheering, the Bruins donned white championship caps and gathered for a group hug at center court. It was especially emotional for Kiki Rice and Gabriela Jaquez, the only two among six seniors who’ve spent their entire four-year careers in Westwood.
“It’s been amazing to watch the program grow since then,” said Jaquez, who had 17 points and seven rebounds. “That’s a reason we all came here, is to do things UCLA has never done before.”
The Bruins (27-1, 17-0 Big Ten) hope they’re not done yet.
They’ve got their eyes on a national championship, something the women’s program hasn’t won since 1978. Back then, it was known as the AIAW — Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women — and UCLA won the title behind star player Ann Meyers, beating Maryland and finishing 27-3.
Today’s Bruins haven’t lost since Nov. 26 against then-No. 4 Texas. They’ve reeled off 21 consecutive victories — blowing out opponent after opponent — going into next Sunday’s regular-season finale at crosstown rival Southern California.
“We do have one loss so that’s kind of like what I think about,” Jaquez said. “I don’t think anyone’s worried about keeping a streak.”
Coach Cori Close worked her way around the arena, thanking the band and season ticketholders, including a man from San Jose who told her, “Do you know how much joy your team brings to so many people?”
“I’m sort of just trying to bask in being a part of something greater than myself or ourselves, and just trying to continue to get better everyday,” she said. “Just really not lose track of the journey. The outcomes and the destinations will take care of themselves as long as we stay really, really focused on our present mission.”
Close paid tribute to the 1978 and ’79 UCLA teams. The ’79 team also reached the AIAW tournament, losing to eventual national champion Old Dominion in the semifinals during the pre-NCAA era.
“It doesn’t make it any less significant,” she said.
UCLA joined the NCAA in 1984, and the current Bruins reached the program’s first NCAA Final Four last season.
“In reality, this is one of the best teams in UCLA history,” Close said. “They have done some things in our current landscape that haven’t been done before.”
Several former UCLA players were on hand to see the Big Ten trophy raised.
“I just wanted to run around and hug all of them, and tell them thank you,” Close said.
Looking around the arena, Close saw the smiles on her players’ faces and those of the team’s fans, including young girls and boys.
“I think these seniors actually do really understand this is really special,” she said. “They’ve set a bar for the culture of our program that we will be forever measuring it against. They’re pretty proud of who they’ve become.”

Brazil thrash Argentina 4-0 to reach Women's U20 World Cup
Brazil thrash Argentina 4-0 to reach Women’s U20 World Cup
The Under-20 Women’s National Team secured their spot in the World Cup of the category this Sunday (22), by thrashing Argentina 4-0 in the fourth round of the final stage of the South American Championship. Evelin, Clarinha, Brendha, and Carioca scored the goals of the match, held at the Luis Alfonso Giagni stadium in Villa Elisa.
In the next round, Brazil will face Ecuador, the runner-up of the current phase. The match will be on Wednesday (25), at 6 PM (Brasília time).
THE MATCH
Argentina had been the only team to defeat the Amarelinha in the group stage of the competition and tried to repeat the counter-attacking game in the final stage match. However, the plan was thwarted by Camilla Orlando’s team before three minutes into the game.

Noticing the opponents playing defensively, the coach encouraged the team to push forward. And the first attack was relentless: Vitorinha took a shot and goalkeeper Siben couldn’t hold it, leaving the ball at Evelin’s feet, who completed it into the goal and opened the scoring.
The early goal left the rivals lost and determined Brazil’s control of the game. Clarinha, who had already created a good chance, extended the lead with a beautiful goal, controlling Dudinha’s pass and shooting with no chance for the Argentine goalkeeper.

And if it turns two, it ends four. In the second half, Argentina remained stunned and unable to threaten Elu’s goal, who left the field practically unthreatened. The opposite of goalkeeper Siben, who faced a barrage. Clarinha tried once more from afar, her shot deflected off Ana Bia, and the ball landed perfectly at Brendha’s feet, who scored the third.
Striker Brendha once again left her mark. She is Brazil’s top scorer in the competition, alongside Nogueira, with four goalsCredits: Staff Images Woman / CBF
And Brazil’s thirst for goals didn’t diminish even in stoppage time: in the last tick of the clock, Emily invaded the area at speed and crossed low for Carioca, at the far post, to seal the Brazilian rout and stamp the green and yellow passport to the World Cup in Poland, from September 5 to 27.

Schedule:
In the next round, Brazil will go to the Women’s Football High-Performance Center of the Paraguayan Association (CARFEM) in the city of Ypané, on the 25th to face Ecuador at 6 PM (Brasília time).
On the 28th, they will conclude their participation in the South American Under-20 Women’s Championship in a match against Venezuela, at a location and time to be defined by CONMEBOL.
Line-up:
BRAZIL: Elu; Thay, Sofia, Ana Beatriz; Nayara (Emily), Vitorinha, Kaylane (Isa Nunes), Clarinha (Nogueira); Dudinha, Evelin (Carioca), and Brendha (Bia Martins).

🚨 NYCFC fight back for road draw with LA Galaxy
🚨 NYCFC fight back for road draw with LA Galaxy
NYCFC and the LA Galaxy kicked off their MLS campaigns with a hard-fought draw in Los Angeles this evening.
After a poor 2025 campaign in which the Galaxy hit historic lows as reigning MLS Cup holders, Gregg Vanney’s side were looking for a quick start to 2026.
They appeared to get just that when new signing João Klauss fired home a Marco Reus pass to open the scoring in style.
The visitors from the Big Apple did well to settle into the game however, and while it took until deep in the second-half, they were given their chance to pull level when Emiro Garcés was sent off for taking down an NYCFC player in the box.
Up stepped Nicolás Fernández to dispatch the equalizer from the spot and snatch a point for the away side.
Still to come

Kyle Tucker Quietly Makes Los Angeles Dodgers Debut
If you were looking for Kyle Tucker to make a huge splash for the Los Angeles Dodgers in his Cactus League debut, then you were sorely misguided.
Tucker did get onto the lineup card on Sunday, walking and also scoring a run as the Dodgers defeated the San Diego Padres 5-1.
But the Dodgers faithful who showed up for the contest were respectful in their applause for Tucker, according to an MLB.com story.
Tucker, along with fire-balling reliever Edwin Díaz, were the big pick-ups for the Dodgers on the free agent market. The Dodgers knew that Tucker, who previously played for the Houston Astros and Chicago Cubs, had a history of just not being a guy who talked a lot.
Nope, Tucker reportedly has just been quietly going about his work at Camelback Ranch in Glendale, Arizona.
Dodgers president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman understood the type of player that his organization was getting in Tucker, too.
“His demeanor is such that it’s not an outward, exuberant personality,” Friedman told Dodgers beat reporter Sonja Chen on Sunday. “So I think that can be misconstrued. … For us it’s about, how does he compete? How does he work? For that, we got very comfortable that when he’s in the box, when he’s in the outfield, he competes as well as anybody.”
Reportedly, Tucker and Díaz spoke at the beginning of camp about their reasons in joining the defending World Series champions. Obviously, both players want to win a World Series, but they reportedly shared what other things lured them to the West Coast.
As for what Tucker thought of his outing on Sunday?
“Well, last year, I got one hit in spring,” Tucker said. “So hopefully I get more than that. That’s the goal.”
Dodgers manager Dave Roberts doesn’t seem to be too worried that Tucker doesn’t vocally dominate conversations in camp. He’s just happy to see him get his whacks in the batting cage or work in the outfield.
“I love guys who just come to work and value playing and love playing and competing,” Roberts said. “He just wants to win. He’s not a self-promoter. He’s not going to give you guys a lot of great sound bites. He wants to play to win. I love guys like that.”
Tucker, much like his Dodgers teammates, still have a lot of work to do ahead of Opening Day. Don’t be surprised if Tucker takes some more whacks in a Spring Training game and ends up making a highlight-reel catch in the outfield.
King Tuck is here to claim his spot in the Dodgers’ lineup.

What Michigan State coach Tom Izzo said about Ohio State postgame
The Ohio State basketball team had a big, big win right there for the taking on the road against Michigan State, but couldn’t make the plays down the stretch to finish it off and impress the NCAA Tournament committee. It’s a repeating pattern, but at least this time the Buckeyes showed great effort and fight on the road while missing two of their best players.
In the end, it was still a loss, but you wouldn’t know it by listening to Spartans head coach Tom Izzo. He met with his reporters after the game and lamented his team’s play from the effort and execution, to the ability to guard and make shots.
Izzo did credit Ohio State, most notably guard Bruce Thornton, but he had more to say about how poorly his team played than what the Buckeyes did on the court in front of the Michigan State crowd. Still, we like to keep tabs on what the opposing coaches have to say after playing Ohio State, so we have his complete press conference here, thanks to the WILX YouTube Channel.
Ohio State will now prepare to hit the road again to take on the Iowa Hawkeyes on Wednesday, and it’ll be the next in the line of must-wins as the regular season comes closer to a close, and with the Buckeyes still on the NCAA Tournament bubble.

Hurricane Hocevar experience on full display in NASCAR Atlanta
Motorsport photo
On one hand, it was the full Carson Hocevar experience at Atlanta, where he was going to take any gap that presented itself but he also acknowledged after the race that he likely has some apologies to make too.
It was an adventure out there:
His race began with a flat tire running inside the top-five and lost a lap on pit road. He started racing the leaders to stay just one lap down but had his right side window blow out and lost another lap.
He scored two free passes to get back on the lead lap, earned stage points by the second stage. Joey Logano spun off his bumper with 22 laps to go. Hocevar is amongst the few to pit for four tires and the extra handling takes him back towards the front.
Racing for the win on the penultimate restart, Christopher Bell gets put into the wall off his bumper. He gets hung out on the final restart and ultimately finishes fourth and leaves fourth in the early championship standings.

“I turned Joey, I didn’t mean to do that,” Hocevar said. “He got stuck in dirty air? It’s my racing excuses like it wasn’t my fault but it definitely was. I was just looking in the mirror the whole time and thought I calculated my gap out front. I just missed it by an inch or two and I owe him a gift card.”
He got a push from Ross Chastain behind him when he got into Bell. Any second gusses there?
“I probably could have slowed,” he said. “I felt like the Toyotas were going to maintain lanes and I felt like if they got lazy and left the middle open, I would be really aggressive and try to fill it. I saw it for a split-second right when I got a huge run and it looked like there was just enough when I was coming. I just went for it, it was in my mind, and by time I got there or by time he realized it, I don’t even need to see it, I’m sure it was closed up.
“I don’t mean to end their day or destroy their car. I just felt like it was in my best interest to break up the Toyotas from their best possibility there.”
Bell hadn’t seen the replay either.
“I haven’t seen it,” Bell said. “I’m going to keep my mouth shut until I see a replay. Yeah.”
Bell thought Hocevar was going to push him out ahead of Wallace.
“That’s what was communicated to me but you never ever expect anything, especially from him and, again, I haven’t seen a replay and maybe there was a hole there and that’s what he thought he was going to do. I don’t know.”
Hocevar got a pair of top 5s between the Truck and Cup races and ultimately called the racing this weekend video game like.
“I felt like the Truck race didn’t hurt, especially with no practice,” he said. “You have to race with aggression and confidence. It’s like a video game and I play a lot of those. Confidence is really big here and it worked out today.”

Tyler Reddick wins at Atlanta to give Michael Jordan second straight NASCAR Cup victory
HAMPTON, Ga. — Whether on or off the racetrack, all Michael Jordan does is win in NASCAR.
For the second consecutive Sunday to open the season, the basketball great and co-owner of 23XI Racing celebrated in victory lane with driver Tyler Reddick. This time, after a thriller at Echo Park Speedway.
Jordan’s team now has the top two drivers in the Cup Series points standings with Reddick and Bubba Wallace. The six-time NBA champion already added a ring last week with Reddick in the Daytona 500, the crown jewel of stock-car racing.
Oh, and Jordan also settled a federal antitrust lawsuit with NASCAR in December, a major legal victory that secured a permanent franchise-style model and ensured his team would remain in business for the long-term.
“The guys worked hard all summer, and I know we had our little ordeal,” Jordan said after Reddick’s victory Sunday, referring to the bruising court battle that ended with him making peace with NASCAR CEO and chairman Jim France. “They kept working hard and this is the fruit of their labor. They put forth the effort, and for us to come out and win the first two races says a lot about our whole team.”
It especially says a lot about Reddick, who put on another dazzling performance the week after he became the fourth driver in history to win the Daytona 500 by leading only the final lap.
This time, he led a race-high 53 laps on the 1.54-mile oval south of Atlanta – including the final two in a double-overtime restart. He snatched the lead from Wallace despite the right-front fender of his No. 45 Toyota being damaged in a nine-car crash on the 224th of a scheduled 260 laps. Reddick fell two laps down for repairs but came roaring back from 27th for his 10th career victory.
“I mean, that’s crazy, ain’t it?” said Reddick, who became the first driver since Matt Kenseth in 2009 to win the first two NASCAR Cup Series races of the season. “I just found a way to get back in the top five, and I tried to stay committed to somebody.”
He got a helpful push from runner-up Chase Briscoe. Ross Chastain finished third, followed by the Spire Motorsports tandem of Carson Hocevar (who triggered a large crash in the first overtime) and Daniel Suarez.
“Tyler had like another gear,” Chastain said. “(He had) no fender, and he pulled us so fast.”
In a race that featured a track-record 57 lead changes, Wallace was first entering the final restart but shuffled to eighth. He still gained the second-most points (48) by winning the second stage and leading 46 laps.
“Tyler did an unbelievable job,” Jordan said. “I feel bad for Bubba because he had an unbelievable day. But Tyler drove his ass off. I’m very happy for Tyler. I’m very happy for 23XI.”
Green turns to yellow
Austin Cindric took advantage of a stretch of 61 green-flag laps to open the race, winning the first stage after starting 30th.
It was the second consecutive year that the first stage in the February race was completed without a yellow flag – an oddity for a track known for chaos since its 2022 reconfiguration into a high-banked drafting oval.
The cautions quickly picked up pace in the second stage with three yellow flags in 40 laps that collected 16 cars and eliminated notable drivers Ty Gibbs, Josh Berry, Ricky Stenhouse Jr. and Kyle Busch. The 160-lap middle segment ended under another yellow when defending Cup Series champion Kyle Larson slammed the outside wall after a collision with Shane van Gisbergen.
No Las Vegas love lost
Busch was perturbed after his No. 8 Chevrolet “got rammed” exiting Turn 2 by the No. 4 Ford of Noah Gragson on the 125th lap.
Though both drivers hail from Las Vegas, Nevada, the 40-year-old Busch felt little kinship in taking issue with the aggressive style of Gragson, who is 13 years younger.
“He didn’t give me an opportunity to make sure I was straight before hitting me or get into me gently to try and get the momentum back,” said Busch, who finished 33rd. “He just drove right through me.”
Up next
The NASCAR Cup Series will race at the Circuit of the Americas, the first road course of the 2026 season, on Sunday, March 1. Christopher Bell outdueled Kyle Busch and William Byron to win at the Austin, Texas, track last year.

Nebraska baseball falls to Kansas State 5-3
Nebraska (3-3) continued the Amegy Bank College Baseball Series on Saturday night against Kansas State (5-1). Despite holding a 3-1 lead through five, the Huskers fell to the Wildcats 5-3.
Nebraska took the lead in the third, going up 2-1 following a two-RBI double from Joshua Overbeek. Jeter Worthley scored the Huskers’ third run on an error after Case Sanderson reached first on a fielder’s choice. Mac Moyer led Nebraska at the plate, hitting 2-for-3.
Kansas State’s Carlos Vasquez lifted the Wildcats to victory by finishing 3-for-4 with four RBIs, delivering runs in three separate innings. Nebraska finished the game with six hits and an error. Kansas State got just four hits, but seven walks.
J’Shawn Unger (0-1) took the loss at the mound for the Huskers, throwing one strikeout and surrendering one hit and one run through 1.1 innings. Carson Jasa started the game for Nebraska, pitching 5.2 innings, throwing eight strikeouts against two hits, four walks and three runs. Grant Cleavinger allowed one run off a walk. Kevin Mannell and Chase Olson each pitched one inning and faced four batters. Both allowed no runs.
Nebraska concludes the series on Sunday afternoon against No. 16 Florida State. The first pitch is set for 2:30 p.m. CT on FloCollege.com.

Walker Kessler free agency update is great news for Lakers
Walker Kessler free agency update is great news for Lakers originally appeared on The Sporting News.
Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
Walker Kessler was linked to the Los Angeles Lakers on last season’s trade market, but a trade never came to fruition.
Although the same occurred during this year’s trade season, the dynamic 7-foot-2 Utah Jazz center remains a player analysts and insiders believe could eventually land with the Lakers. Based on a recent free agency report regarding Kessler, the Lakers could be in great shape to secure Kessler’s services this summer.
“Here’s what I’ll tell you: the Jazz have a number in mind. I think they are comfortable in the $25 million per range, and Walker Kessler and his reps at CAA believe he’s worth much, much more than that,” ESPN’s Tim MacMahon said on Feb. 11.
“Now, some options have disappeared. But I’m just telling you, that’s going to be a potentially very tense and extended restricted free agency process.”
If Kessler and the Jazz are unable to reach a new deal (he’s in the final year of his four-year, $13.37 million rookie contract), Los Angeles should be prepared to steal the Auburn product from Utah by paying him what he’s worth.
It isn’t far-fetched to suggest Kessler will be an All-Star in the foreseeable future, as his smooth touch around the rim and elite shot-blocking chops have been on full display in the big leagues.
Kessler, who suffered a season-ending shoulder injury at the beginning of the year, averaged 14.4 points, 10.8 rebounds, 1.8 blocks, and 1.4 steals per game with the Jazz this season, shooting 70.3% from the field in five contests.
The Jazz’s inability to lock in their standout center for years to come could benefit the Lakers this summer.
