Red Sox roster: Boston searching free agent, trade markets for left-handed relief help

FORT MYERS, Fla. — As exhibition games get underway in both Arizona and Florida this weekend, the Red Sox remain interested in improving their bullpen depth from the left side, several sources confirmed Sunday.

At present, the Red Sox have just three lefty relievers — Aroldis Chapman, Jovani Moran and Tyler Samaniego — on their 40-man roster. Chapman, of course, is locked in as the team’s closer.

The team has said it does not intend to pitch any of their lefty depth starters like Payton Tolle or Connelly Early in relief.

Both Moran and Samaniego are battling for the role of lefty reliever.

Moran has some rather limited big league experience with the Minnesota Twins, having appeared in 79 games between 2021-2023 and two games with the Red Sox in the second half of last season. Samaniego, obtained in the deal that saw the Red Sox acquire Johan Oviedo from Pittsburgh, has yet to make his major league debut and, in fact, hasn’t pitched above Double A.

Over the winter, the team dealt away a handful of lefty relievers, including Brennan Bernardino and Chris Murphy while electing not to re-sign Justin Wilson and Steven Matz.

That’s left the Red Sox without a lot of lefty options to pair with mainstays Chapman, Garrett Whitlock, Justin Slaten and Greg Weissert.

The Sox intend to have scouts looking at some lefty relievers in rival camps, both in games and in back-field workouts.

There remains a handful of veteran lefty relievers still available on the free agent market, including Jalen Beeks, Danny Coulombe, Colin Poche and Joey Lucchesi. Wilson, meanwhile, is said to be leaning toward retirement.

Many of those free agents have been seeking major league deals, while teams, this late in spring, have been more focused on minor league deals with invitations to big league camp.

The fact that camps are underway and exhibition games are being played could exert some pressure on the free agents to accept NRI (non-roster invitation) deals.

The Red Sox are currently at full capacity with their 40-man roster, with the potential of having to add players when they set the Opening Day roster. Retaining some roster flexibility as the spring progresses remains a priority.

Former Cardinals WR died of self-inflicted gunshot wound

Rondale Moore’s cause of death was revealed on Sunday, Feb. 22, one day after the former Arizona Cardinals wide receiver died in his hometown of New Albany, Indiana.

Chief Todd Bailey of the New Albany Police Department said that Moore died of a suspected self-inflicted gunshot wound. He was found dead in the garage of a property on the 1600 block of Ekin Avenue in New Albany.

Moore’s autopsy is scheduled for Sunday, Feb. 22. The New Albany Police Department is conducting an investigation into his death but did not provide additional information “due to the ongoing nature of this investigation.”

Moore, who was 25 years old, most recently played for the Cardinals in 2023 before a trade to the Atlanta Falcons. He then spent 2025 with the Minnesota Vikings, although he did not play in either of the past two seasons due to a pair of knee injuries.

After his death, tributes poured out from former Cardinals teammates.

“Just spoke to you bro,” quarterback Kyler Murray wrote on Instagram. “Blessed to have been able to share this life with you. I pray you’re in a better place now Ra.”

“Unbelievable,” running back James Conner wrote. “Lil bro was special.”

Michael Wilson, who shared a wide receiver room with Moore as a rookie, echoed that message.

“Truly heartbreaking,” Wilson wrote. “Rest in peace brother.”

Like Murray, former Cardinals wide receiver Hollywood Brown said that he had recently spoken with Moore. In a follow-up post on X, Brown wrote, “You wasn’t alone bro. I told you I know how you feel.”

J.J. Watt, the former Cardinals defensive end, also posted a message on X.

“Can’t even begin to fathom or process this,” Watt wrote. “There’s just no way. Way too soon. Way too special. So much left to give. Rest in Peace Rondale.”

Multiple team accounts also shared their condolences, including the Cardinals.

Bengals still open to tag and trade of Trey Hendrickson, per report

GREEN BAY, WISCONSIN – OCTOBER 12: Trey Hendrickson #91 of the Cincinnati Bengals looks on against the Green Bay Packers at Lambeau Field on October 12, 2025 in Green Bay, Wisconsin. (Photo by Michael Reaves/Getty Images) | Getty Images

The Trey Hendrickson saga continues into this offseason, with rampant speculation about what the Cincinnati Bengals’ front office will choose to do.

Most recently, Tony Pauline of EssentiallySports reported that “people with knowledge of the situation tell me that it’s not out of the question that Cincinnati will attempt to tag and trade [Hendrickson”

Pauline pointed out that, for that to work, the star pass rusher would have to agree to a contract with the team that hopes to acquire him.

In the article, Pauline also wrote that the Bengals may have moved Hendrickson before last year’s trade deadline had he not suffered the hip injury that ended his season after seven games.

Should the Bengals tag and trade Hendrickson, it would be a departure from their MO, in a good way.

You can expect to hear a number of other reports about Hendrickson’s contract before free agency kicks off in March.

Dylan Larkin plays big role as USA 'exorcises the demons' vs. Canada

MILAN – Dylan Larkin was still on his skates half an hour after the game ended, a gold medal around his neck. He didn’t want to take off either.

“It’s just the best feeling I’ve ever felt with these skates on,” Larkin told USA TODAY Sports. “From having my daughter to now, to the start we’ve had in Detroit. This season’s been a lot of fun and now this. There’s a lot to look forward to.”

Larkin had just helped USA win gold at the 2026 Winter Olympics, helping them go 18-for-18 on penalty kills and scoring two huge goals during the six games it took to win the biggest prize in international hockey with a 2-1 overtime victory over Canada.

“I hope we exorcised the demons,” Larkin said. “It was fitting, we had to do it against them. Hopefully there’s many more guys to win this medal because it’s such a good feeling.”

Feb. 22 was for celebrating, for singing songs in the locker room at Milano Santagiulia Ice Hockey Arena, where USA had just dispatched Canada. It was a good day for Michigan hockey players: For Larkin, the native of Waterford and captain of the Detroit Red Wings; for Connor Hellebuyck (Commerce) who made 41 saves, for Jack Hughes, who scored the winning goal, and Quinn Hughes, who led USA with eight points in six games; the brothers consider Canton their hometown and Quinn played at Michigan.

Hellebuyck was phenomenal, making 33 saves total in the second and third periods.

“He was unbelievable,” Larkin said. “Unbelievable performance. I can’t believe he gets flak for not being a big game player because he proved to the world this tournament how special he is. I got nervous before every one of these games this tournament. When you look back at him, that settles a lot of nerves. He was special tonight and what a performance.”

Larkin was asked to play more of a defensive role at the Games, to be a penalty killer and bring energy. He embraced it, earning rave reviews from coach Mike Sullivan, who is also the coach of the New York Rangers.

“We root for all the guys, but Larks in particular, he’s gone through the experience that he’s gone through in Detroit,” Sullivan said. “I think that team is becoming formidable at this point. I think they’re emerging right now, and he’s a big part of it. He’s a big part of this team. He’s a fierce competitor. He’s a terrific player on both sides of the puck. You can utilize him in so many ways.

“The thing that probably I’ve really grown to admire about him is getting to know him as a person, which you don’t get to do when you play against him in the NHL all the time. The 4 Nations experience and now the Olympics has given me an opportunity to get to know him a little bit as a person and then you realize the intangibles that he brings to the table and why he is the player that he is. He’s a great teammate. All he wants to do is win. He’s willing to embrace anything we ask of him to do so, and he’s capable in so many ways. Am I rooting for him? Absolutely.”

Now it’s back to the grind of the NHL season. Players were scheduled to leave Milan on Feb. 23 on a charter that originally was supposed to land at New York’s JFK airport, but instead is scheduled to land in Miami because of the snowstorm battering the northeast.

Larkin will get a day or two to rest up, having played six games in two weeks on top of the 58 he has played with the Wings since early October. He absorbed a crushing hit from Tom Wilson in the first period of the game against Canada, but got up right away and finished the game.

“My body was feeling good until I got that hit in the first,” Larkin said. “I’ll be okay, but it got me good.”

It was a special tournament for Larkin, one he said he had dreamed about “so many times,” since he was a kid. He had his own kid with him at the Olympics, Lennyn Marie, born last May. Larkin’s wife, Kenzy, was at the game, along with his parents, and – well, a lot of people.

“My wife’s whole family is here, ” Larkin said.” My aunt and uncle from Wisconsin. Close family friends from Waterford. My grandmother watching back in Toronto. Uncle Paul’s watching in Clarkston at his bar. It’s great.”

Now Larkin gets to go home to a Red Wings team poised to make the playoffs for the first time in 10 years. He does so as an Olympic gold medalist, having just seen up close how big-game players play when it matters most.

“These guys, they want that moment,” Larkin said. “They want the puck on their stick. They’re going to win the game. It’s special.”

MSU basketball survives upset scare, beats Ohio State

A poor start nearly doomed the Spartans again, but they were able to avoid disaster with a narrow win over Ohio State.

Michigan State rallied in the second half to avoid a crippling upset and top the banged up Buckeyes, 66-60, from the Breslin Center on Sunday. Michigan State trailed for a large portion of the game, but finished strong to pick up their second straight win.

The trend of getting off to a poor start continued for the Spartans on Sunday, with Michigan State trailing heading into the break for the sixth time in their last seven games. Michigan State struggled offensively and was unable to get much going, but luckily had a strong enough defensive effort to keep the Buckeyes’ lead narrow at the break. Ohio State star guard Bruce Thornton had 16 of his game-high 32 points in the first half, to give the Buckeyes a 26-23 lead at the break.

The second half was mostly back-and-forth with a few lead changes before Michigan State took the lead with 10 minutes left and never surrendered it. Ohio State put forth a late rally but the Spartans held on thanks to some timely baskets and made free throws.

Carson Cooper starred for the Spartans, finishing the game with 20 points and 11 rebounds. Jordan Scott (12 points) and Jeremy Fears Jr. (11 points) were the other two lone Spartans to reach double-digits in points.

With the win, Michigan State improves to 22-5 overall and 12-4 in Big Ten play. The Spartans have four regular season games remaining, with three of those coming on the road.

Michigan State will be on the road next week, with a pair of games against the Big Ten’s Indiana-based teams. The Spartans will first play at Purdue on Thursday, and then head to Indiana on Sunday. Tipoff between Michigan State and Purdue is scheduled for 8 p.m. ET on Thursday.

Mick Maynard's Shoes: What's next for Sean Strickland after UFC Fight Night 267 win?

Sean Strickland returned to the octagon in emphatic fashion at UFC Fight Night 267 when he wiped out streaking contender Anthony Hernandez.

It was a critical performance from Strickland (30-7 MMA, 17-7 UFC), who was a big underdog to Hernandez (15-3 MMA, 9-3 UFC) in the headliner at Toyota Center in Houston. Many viewed it as his moment to be ushered out of the middleweight title picture, but instead, he delivered a firm reminder he’s still here with a third-round TKO finish.

The former 185-pound titleholder showed more aggression and tenacity than the listless efforts he can often produce. That paid off in a big way, and now Strickland could have a real opportunity to get another shot at the belt.

Strickland took more than a year off after losing his rematch to then-champ Dricus Du Plessis in February 2025. Since then, Khamzat Chimaev has taken possession of the strap, and there appears to be some genuine bad blood between the pair.

A training session between Strickland and Chimaev from years ago at Xtreme Couture in Las Vegas has taken on a lore of its own. Both men offer different versions of what happened, and it was once again a point of discussion in the aftermath of the event when Strickland called out the undefeated champion.

Chimaev (15-0 MMA, 9-0 UFC) responded to the “American b*tch,” and it’s possible we could be looking at a UFC White House title fight, or a matchup of magnitude on another numbered event in 2026.

No more can be said without acknowledging Nassourdine Imavov, though, and how unfair it would be for him to be left out of the next title fight after putting together a six-fight unbeaten streak that includes wins over Caio Borralho, Israel Adesanya and Brendan Allen.

If it were a pure meritocracy, Imavov (17-4 MMA, 9-2 UFC) has the better recent wins. Strickland does have a head-to-head victory over Imavov from 2023, albeit on short notice and at light heavyweight. Moreover, Strickland has the name value and following that, in this era of the UFC, is a major checkmark in his favor.

The only way Strickland vs. Chimaev isn’t made next, in this writer’s opinion, is if someone at TKO, the UFC or Paramount makes the call that putting in a Strickland in such a hate-fuelled scenario, where he will surely push all boundaries with Chimaev in the lead-up to fight, is simply something they don’t want to deal with.
