Report: Blue Jays exploring new stadium

The Toronto Blue Jays are exploring the possibility of a new stadium, in an ambitious plan that would put a new ballpark on the land where their current retractable-roof stadium now sits, according to The Globe and Mail. The Blue Jays have played at Rogers Centre since 1989, in a ballpark that was considered far ahead of its time when it opened with a roof that could open and close and with a hotel that has rooms overlooking center field. A potential snag to the plan is that the team does not own the land where their stadium sits, as it belongs to Canada Lands Company.

Dave Hyde: He guarded Don Shula, married Jimmy Johnson and has 34 years of Dolphins stories from behind the curtain

For 34 years, he was the first phone call. He was called to be bodyguard for the Miami Dolphins coaches or to be a facilitator through red tape. Lungi Ngidi exclusive interview: ‘As a sportsman, giving back is important and shining a light on problems in the world’

For Lungi Ngidi, bowling out England is only part of his job as a South African quick bowler. That aim on the pitch sits alongside another ambition: helping to bring about change off the pitch. “You can influence a lot of people – as a sportsman I think it’s your duty to speak up against social injustice and racial discrimination,” Ngidi reflects. “You’ve got the power to reach a much larger audience than most people. And if you can influence the future in a positive way I feel that it is part of your responsibility. You knew what you were getting into when you became a professional sportsman, so I think giving back is really important and shining a light on problems in the world.” In July, Ngidi gave what he thought was an uncontroversial response to a question about the Black Lives Matter movement, declaring: “It’s something that we need to take seriously, like the rest of the world is doing.” Ngidi’s comments sparked a bitter feud within the South African game. Four prominent former white players attacked his comments, accusing Ngidi of ignoring the plight of white South African farmers being attacked. In response, the South African Cricket Association supported Ngidi, and a group of 31 ex-Proteas cricketers, across races, signed a statement which declared that “Given South Africa’s well-known past, black cricketers have borne the brunt of subtle and overt racist behaviour for many years, including from some colleagues”. The affair was the latest reminder of how intertwined South African sport and politics are. And for Ngidi, the backlash only emphasised the importance of speaking out.
