For old movie buffs, this is a treasure. James Garner perfected the lovable rogue character long before Harrison Ford. Take one part hustler, one part con man, one part good guy, and one part coward, and you’ve got his “dog robber” character, who is utterly dedicated to pleasing his boss admiral, played by one of my favorite character actors, Melvyn Douglas.
