Colts worked out 6 players, including several experienced linebackers

The Indianapolis Colts reportedly worked out six players on Friday. Not surprisingly, five of them were linebackers–a position the Colts have shown heavy interest in since roster cutdowns.

CB Shemar BartholomewLB Milo EiflerLB David LongLB Raekwon McMillanLB Duke RileyLB Ty Summers

Bartholomew went undrafted in 2024 and played 17 defensive snaps in Week 18 and 34 special teams snaps across five games. With the Colts navigating injuries at cornerback, they could be looking to bolster their practice squad depth.

Eifler has been in the NFL since 2021. He has minimal defensive snaps but has played 312 on special teams.

Long is the most experienced of this group, with 3,263 career snaps since 2019. For his career, Long has made 407 tackles, has four interceptions, and seven pass breakups.

McMillan is a former second-round draft pick in 2017. In the most recent 2024 season, he played 267 defensive snaps, logging three pressures and 42 tackles.

The #Colts worked out the following players today:

CB Shemar Bartholomew
LB Milo Eifler
LB David Long
LB Raekwon McMillan
LB Duke Riley
LB Ty Summers

— Jake Arthur (@JakeArthurNFL) September 12, 2025

Riley was a third-round pick in 2017 with 2,382 career snaps. Last season, he played just 43 defensive snaps with Miami.

Lastly, Summers was a seventh-round pick in 2019. He played 203 defensive snaps in 2020 and 113 snaps in 2024.

The fact that the Colts had several players in may not mean a signing is imminent. As GM Chris Ballard said before the season, the team would be holding quite a few workouts throughout September to build out a list of potential players to call upon this season if in a pinch. This is common practice across the NFL.

“We’re going to explore guys right now,” Ballard said before the season. “We’re going to explore vets. You’re going to see over the next 10 days. You’re going to see it over the next month, we’re going to bring guys in. That’s what we do. We’re going to kick the tires, make sure we have a list of guys that if we have to go to, we can go to them.”

Sheridan, located south of Little Rock, makes the trek up to Northwest Arkansas to take on Rogers.

Going into Friday’s game, Sheridan stands at 1-1. The Yellowjackets started the season with a 58-28 win against White Hall, but was on the wrong end of a 30-point score last week, falling 42-12 to Hot Springs Lakeside.

Ryan Staub is seizing the moment

Ryan Staub is seizing the moment
originally appeared on The Sporting News

Ryan Staub’s breakout performance has captured the Buffs fanbase and drawn attention across college football. On Coach Prime’s Playbook with Romi Bean, both Staub and Deion Sanders reflected on what made the moment possible.

Sanders said the quarterback’s preparation never wavered despite being buried on the depth chart. “Staub attacks every day in practice, like he’s preparing for the game…When I tell you, no murmuring, no bickering, no jealousy when other guys are up, Staub is right there. He’s supporting him and he’s everything you want in a football player. He really is. And I’m excited that he got an opportunity.”

Staub admitted the path wasn’t easy. “Obviously, I was the third string going through camp and third string starting the season, and just my whole goal every day was to make sure I was ready. You know, get the reps after practice. I wasn’t getting them during practice. Keep my mind ready and just keep my arm and everything just ready so that if I got my shot, I was ready to go.”

— Colorado Buffaloes Football (@CUBuffsFootball) September 12, 2025

When asked about staying patient, he explained, “It’s hard. I’ve got experience in this game now. It’s my third year and I was the backup to Shedeur for a couple of years. And so I know what it’s like to prepare and to be ready, especially at the highest level, like he did every single week.”

Staub felt the energy when his number was called. “I just remember talking with my dad the night before the game, and I said, if I go in, I just want to make sure I have a presence out there. I want the stadium and the team to feel a different energy.”

Looking ahead, his mindset hasn’t changed. “Same mentality. We’re preparing hard. It’s the first game of conference play. And yeah, I’m preparing as much as I can. You know if I get that shot, we’re going to be rolling.”

As he prepares to start tonight in Houston, Staub knows he’ll be supported not only by his teammates, but by family in the stands. “My whole mom’s side will be out there. My grandma might even make a little visit, which will be cool. So yeah, it’ll mean a lot to me and it’ll be a nice homecoming. But we’re focused on the task at hand.”

Thailand's Chanettee leads by two at LPGA Queen City event

Thailand’s Chanettee Wannasaen fired a 68 to stay in front after 36 holes at the LPGA Queen City Championship (Dylan Buell)

Thailand’s Chanettee Wannasaen fired a four-under par 68 to hold her two-stroke lead after Friday’s second round of the LPGA Queen City Championship.

Chanettee, who opened with a 63 on Thursday, fired an eagle, three birdies and a bogey to stand on 13-under 131 after 36 holes at TPC River’s Bend in Cincinnati, Ohio.

“The golf course is not that tough, but we can make a bogey so easy,” Chanettee said. “You still need to concentrate.”

Thailand’s world number one Jeeno Thitikul fired a bogey-free 64, making birdies on six of the last eight holes including four in a row from 13 to 16.

“Just rolling really well on the back nine,” she said.

Jeeno shared second on 133 with Germany’s Olivia Cowan and England’s Charley Hull, who both shot 65.

“I just played pretty steady from the get-go,” Hull said. “Took advantage of some good birdie holes, hit it close and holed some good putts.”

The 21-year-old Chanettee, who began the day with a two-stroke lead, seeks her third career LPGA crown after wins at Portland in 2023 and last year’s Dana Open.

Chanettee began on the back nine and birdied the par-five 11th then eagled the par-four 13th.

“I was so lucky,” she said. “I didn’t see the ball like get in the hole but a guy screamed and he points like it’s in the hole.”

Chanettee answered her first bogey of the week at 17 with birdies at the par-five 18th and par-three fifth.

“I really like this golf course,” Chanettee said. “The greens are firmer so it’s pretty challenging.”

After missing the cut at the Women’s British Open last month and in three of her past four events overall, Women’s PGA Championship runner-up Chanettee got a boost from some advice to stand a bit closer to the ball by compatriot Wichanee Meechai.

“She just gave me a hint a little bit because I ‘cannot’ hit the ball — I had lost a lot of confidence,” Chanettee said. “I know golf can’t be perfect but I just wanted it to be better.”

She also found it harder to get over mistakes until this week, where she had her best LPGA opening round.

“Sometimes when I make some mistakes I just feel like I cannot leave that thing behind. ‘Can I go back to Thailand now?’ Something like that,” Chanettee said. “But this week it’s like really enjoy it.”

Three adrift were American Gigi Stoll, who was second Thursday but fired a 69 Friday in quest of her first LPGA victory, Sweden’s Maja Stark and 12-time LPGA winner Kim Sei-young of South Korea.

A pack on 135 included world number two Nelly Korda while defending champion Lydia Ko of New Zealand fired a 69 to stand on 139.

Canelo Alvarez as 'greatest Mexican fighter ever' could hinge on Terence Crawford result

With Canelo Alvarez’s undisputed super middleweight title on the line, the Mexican star will be fighting more than Terence Crawford on Saturday, Sept. 13 in Las Vegas.

He’ll also be fighting for his legacy.

Aris Pina, a voter for the International Boxing Hall of Famer, said he thinks Alvarez ranks among the Top 30 boxers all-time. Barry Tompkins, a highly regarded boxing analyst, said he thinks Alvarez is in contention for the mythical crown of best Mexican boxer ever.

The prevailing sentiment: Alvarez’s legacy hinges in part on the outcome of his fight against Crawford, who like Alvarez, has spent time atop the pound-for-pound rankings. Alvarez is 63-2-2 with 39 knockouts.

“His record speaks for itself,’’ Tompkins said. “And to his credit, he’s fought everyone who’s come along.’’

But he has not fought Crawford, who is 41-0 with 31 knockouts and, like Alvarez, a shoo-in as a Hall-of-Fame inductee. With Crawford jumping two weight classes, to 168 pounds from 154 pounds, a victory would damage Alvarez’s legacy, which needs cementing.

Julio Cesar Chavez Sr., who was widely regarded as the best pound-for-pound boxer in the early 1990s and finished his career with a record of 107-6-2 with 85 KOs, has long been considered the best Mexican fighter ever. Tompkins said Alvarez belongs in the conversation.

“Definitely in the conversation,’’ Tompkins told USA TODAY Sports.

Pina said he thinks there’s more work to do.

“If he beats Crawford and he beats him convincingly and goes on to beat (David Benavidez) or something like that, I could easily see him if someone were to say, ‘OK, he’s the No. 1 greatest Mexican fighter ever,’ ” Pina told USA TODAY Sports. “I probably wouldn’t even really argue.’ ”

Learning in the ring

In Mexico, with the option to turn pro as early as 15, Alvarez did just that. He won 11 of his first 13 fights by knockout and began to develop a reputation as a tough fighter with a rock solid chin and impressive defense.

He will carry those attributes into the 68th fight of his pro career.

“Through all the styles that he’s had to fight coming up to become the most well-rounded fighter you’ve seen, many have seen in years,’’ Pina said.

At 23, Alvarez stepped in the ring with Floyd Mayweather Jr., who was then 36 and considerably more experienced. Mayweather won by majority decision and handed Alvarez the first loss of his career.

He won his next 16 fights and went more than eight years without another loss.

“What we’ve learned from that is that he was able to bounce back,’’ Pina said. “Floyd dominated more or less, but Alvarez had his moments and it gave people hope that, ‘Hey, maybe he can learn from this.’ He absolutely did. He became a more complete fighter.

“And each fight it got gradual even more. You could see that.’’

In 2017, Gennadiy Golovkin had emerged as one of the hardest punchers in boxing. Top fighters steered clear.

Not Alvarez.

So began their trilogy.

It started with a draw in which Golovkin appeared to win, but Alvarez atoned in their second fight with a victory by split decision. He won their third fight by unanimous decision.

“He was much better in the rematch than he was the first fight, which clearly shows he learned what some of Golovkin tendencies,’’ Pina said.

Now 35, Alvarez still is a hybrid of brains and brawn. He suffered his second career loss in 2022, when he moved up to the 175-pound light heavyweight division and lost to Dmitry Bivol by unanimous decision.

Since then, he has won six fights in a row, without a knockout or a close call.

“He’s a pro,’’ Tompkins said, “and he does what he needs to do to win the fight.’’

On Saturday, Alvarez will be looking to win for the 64th time of his career and potentially a legacy-cementing victory.

Gameday Thread, #148: 9/12 @ Twins

Minneapolis originated around a source of energy: Saint Anthony Falls, the only natural waterfall on the Mississippi. Each of the city’s two founding industries—flour and lumber milling—developed in the 19th century nearly concurrently, and each came to prominence for about fifty years. In 1884, the value of Minneapolis flour milling was the world’s highest. In 1899, Minneapolis outsold every other lumber market in the world. Through its expanding mill industries, Minneapolis earned the nickname “Mill City”. Due to the occupational hazards of milling, six companies manufactured artificial limbs.

Disasters struck in the late 19th century: the Eastman tunnel under the river leaked in 1869; twice, fire destroyed the entire row of sawmills on the east bank; an explosion of flour dust at the Washburn A mill killed eighteen people and demolished about half the city’s milling capacity; and in 1893, fire spread from Nicollet Island to Boom Island to northeast Minneapolis, destroyed twenty blocks, and killed two people.
