Spurs are similar to Liverpool — I am not surprised by their development, says Jurgen Klopp

Whenever Jürgen Klopp meets Jose Mourinho, football’s fashion police are never far from the scene. Liverpool versus Tottenham Hotspur will predictably be billed as a clash of style and culture, Klopp’s attacking zeal facing the obstinate bus parking of Mourinho. It may come as some surprise, then, that Klopp himself suggested such an appraisal needs myth-busting ahead of the meeting of the Premier League’s top two on Wednesday. “You cannot be top of the league with just counter-attacking,” said Klopp. What might please his visiting rival even more was Klopp’s suggestion he sees many of his own team’s qualities in Spurs. “I am not surprised by the Tottenham development. The style of play? I am not sure what you mean,” said Klopp. “I see a lot of similarities with us in the way they build-up and play football. If you see their games you see they are a proper football side. You see how [Harry] Kane drops like Bobby Firmino does it. And they have two quick wingers right and left. To defend in those areas is really difficult. They have an offensive midfielder with two strong sitting midfielders. They play football, not only counter-attacking. They defend really well. “You are right they are not bothered about sitting back and defending the result and going for counter-attacks, but that is not the only strength of Tottenham. That could be your impression if you only read about them. I see what I see. And unfortunately, what I see is pretty good.”
