Pacers score plenty of points but can't stop Mavericks in 134-130 loss
INDIANAPOLIS — Veteran forward Khris Middleton scored 25 points to lead the Mavericks to a 134-130 win over the Pacers on Sunday at Gainbridge Fieldhouse.
The Pacers fell to 15-43, sitting alone in last in the Eastern Conference standings and next to last overall in the NBA standings ahead of only the Sacramento Kings. The Mavericks improved to 20-36.
Forward P.J. Washington scored 23 points and grabbed nine rebounds. Forward Naji Marshall had 17 points on 7 of 10 shooting. Guard Max Christie had 16 points and center Marvin Bagley had 12 points and 11 rebounds. All-Star Pascal Siakam led the Pacers with 30 points. Guard Andrew Nembhard had 22 points and 11 assists. Forward Jarace Walker had 18 points, nine rebounds and six assists, forward Kobe Brown had a career-high 15 points and seven rebounds and Ben Sheppard had 13 points.
Here are three observations.
Turnovers, poor defense keep Pacers from pulling off win
The Pacers got enough impressive offensive performances in this one to keep them within striking distance for the game’s entirety but they were never able to take control because they couldn’t get enough stops and committed too many turnovers, keeping with recent trends.
The Mavericks shot 54.3% from the floor (51 of 94) and scored 64 points in the paint with 14 second-chance points, getting far too many easy ones around the rim. They also scored 19 points off the Pacers’ 16 turnovers while the Pacers scored just 10 points off the Mavericks’ 11 giveaways.
The Mavericks were without rookie sensation Cooper Flagg, but veteran forward Khris Middleton was particularly deadly, putting together a vintage performance with 25 points on 11 of 15 shooting including 3 of 5 from 3-point range to go with seven rebounds and seven assists. The Mavericks finished with 1.23 points per possession.
Pascal Siakam gets back in the lineup
The Pacers gave Pascal Siakam the first two games after the All-Star break off as he missed Thursday’s game against the Wizards for personal reasons and Friday’s game with left hamstring injury management. He got back on the floor rested up on Sunday and showed the same form that led to his election for his fourth All-Star Game, even in painful season for the Pacers.
Siakam scored 30 points on 12 of 19 shooting including 2 of 3 from 3-point range, cracking the 20-point mark for the 41st time in his 52 appearances this season and over 30 points for the 11th game. He has scored in double figures in all 52 games he’s appeared in. He also finished with eight rebounds and three assists.
Kobe Brown scores career-high
The Pacers haven’t put newly acquired center Ivica Zubac on the floor yet thanks to a left ankle sprain — and they’re probably not in a rush to considering their place in the standings and the reverse standings. But newly acquired forward Kobe Brown is getting far more action than he got with the Clippers this season prior to the trade and he is making the most of it.
Brown scored a career-high 15 points on 5 of 9 shooting including 3 of 4 from 3-point range. He also grabbed seven rebounds. He has scored in double figures in three straight games and has played at least 18 minutes in each of the five games he’s played with the Pacers. He averaged 2.9 points per game in 8.7 minutes per game for the Clippers this season and appeared in just 34 of the Clippers’ 50 games while he was on the Los Angeles roster.

Funeral arrangements set for Lebanon's Jayden Bailey, who died of cancer
Visitation for Lebanon High School junior Jayden Bailey, who died Feb. 19 after a nearly four-year battle with cancer, will be held Sunday, March 1, from 1-2 p.m. at the high school.
The funeral will follow at 2 p.m. There also will be a visitation at Neuble Monument Funeral Home on Saturday, though a time has not yet been set, Lebanon coach Jim McDowell told The Tennesseean on the afternoon of Feb. 22.
Bailey, 17, was diagnosed with osteosarcoma, a type of bone cancer, in June 2022, and had his left arm amputated in August 2025. In October 2025, cancer returned, this time to Bailey’s stomach. But he returned to the court and played for the Blue Devils despite those setbacks until mid- to late-December, when his health worsened.
Bailey was honored at Beech High School after death
The Blue Devils played in the TSSAA District 7-4A at Beech High School hours after learning of his death on Feb. 19, defeating Mount Juliet 74-57 in first-round game before coming back Feb. 21 and defeating Green Hill 46-44 in a semifinal.
“The last game that he dressed (in mid-December), he came straight from Vanderbilt Hospital, getting his stomach drained, ran in the gym to get dressed to be with the team,” Lebanon coach Jim McDowell told The Tennessean on Feb. 21. “He was a hooper, man, you hear me?
“He loved basketball.”
Cheerleaders and coaches wore yellow ribbons in Bailey’s memory during the Feb. 21 game, and the team wore yellow “Play for Jayden” T-shirts over their jerseys during warmups. Beech High also advertised the GoFundMe set up for Bailey’s family.
Blue Devils continue to play with Jayden Bailey on their minds
Lebanon will play again Tuesday night at Beech.
And the Blue Devils plan to play in Bailey’s memory until the season ends.
“I know he wanted us to do it,” said Amaure Manier, who has known Bailey since preschool. “He just had a smile on his head at all times, no matter what he was going through. … When you see a kid like him, going through what he went through, and still out there playing … “

Tyler Reddick Wrangles Damaged Race Car to Second Straight NASCAR Cup Series Win to Open the Season
Reddick Goes Back to Back, Wins at AtlantaJonathan Bachman – Getty Images
In a race filled with attrition, Tyler Reddick battled through a double overtime finish to open the NASCAR Cup Series 2026 season with back-to-back victories, winning at Echo Park Speedway Sunday night.
23XI Racing currently has its two drivers at the top of the points standings through the first two races, as Reddick wins the Daytona 500 and Autotrader 400, and Bubba Wallace matches his Daytona 500 performance with a top ten finish and a stage win.
Tyler drove his ass off today,” 23XI Racing owner Michael Jordan said.
“I know we had our little ordeal, but they never gave up, they kept working hard, and this is the fruit of their labor,” Jordan said on 23XI Racing’s performance to start the post-law suit year. “For us to come out and win the first two races says a lot about our team.”
Fellow Toyota driver Christopher Bell led on the lap 17 restart, looking to back up his win in the race last year that sent him on his three-race streak. Bell was in the battle with Wallace, with Wallace taking the lead with 12 laps to go. As Wallace battled up front, his teammate Reddick, sans right front fender, made the run from 18th to fourth before a caution and red flag set up the first overtime finish.
Reddick, who rose through the Late Model ranks, won without a fender.
“That’s crazy isn’t its it,” Reddick said on winning without a fender. “This place over the years, man. It just puts on some amazing racing. Handling matters here, but I don’t know, apparently determination outweighs handling.”
The caution was called after William Byron had a tire go down, sending the Hendrick driver into the wall. He collected six cars with four laps remaining to set up an Overtime finish.
Carson Hocevar, still chasing his first win, led last week on the white flag lap before crashing. He also matched performance this week, as a few aggressive moves in the closing laps nearly secured him the win. Known to make bold decisions and enemies, Hocevar and his spotter tried to negotiate with the leading Toyotas to push on the restart. Asking Wallace to ‘Shake and Bake’ and have the Reddick line up behind in the third row. Wallace instead opted to start on the bottom with Reddick lining up behind him, unsure if Reddick’s damaged race car would be able to successfully push the teammates in tandem to the front.
On the overtime restart, Hocevar dove to a pocket in the middle of Bell, and Wallace bailed on pushing Bell when he got a major push from Ross Chastain. Hocevar crashed into Bell, and the Joe Gibbs Racing driver hit the wall, sustaining major front right damage.
The second overtime attempt saw Wallace and Reddick linked up again, now with JGR’s Chase Briscoe behind for a three-car Toyota chain on the bottom against three Chevrolets on the top.
In the closing two laps, Wallace went high to block Hocevar and lost momentum, falling back through the field as his teammate passed on the bottom. In clean air, Reddick was able to hang on through the rough handling of his damaged race car to claim his second win ahead of Briscoe, Chastain, Hocevar, and Daniel Suarez.
Shane van Gisbergen, who was involved in two incidents in stage two, rebounded for a sixth-place finish, his best finish on an oval track.
Zane Smith, Wallace, Ryan Preece, and Ryan Blaney completed the top ten.

Bulls guard Anfernee Simons sidelined and needs imaging on injured left wrist
CHICAGO (AP) — Chicago Bulls guard Anfernee Simons will have additional imaging on his injured left wrist on Monday and see a hand specialist, coach Billy Donovan said before Sunday’s game against the New York Knicks.
Simons, acquired by Chicago in a deal that sent center Nikola Vucevic to Boston at the trade deadline earlier this month, was hurt in Chicago’s 126-110 loss to Detroit on Saturday and didn’t play in the second half.
The injury was listed as a left wrist sprain, but Donovan said the team wasn’t certain of the exact diagnosis or how long Simons might be out.
“They (the Bulls medical staff) certainly want to see a hand doctor and we’ll do some pictures tomorrow, so I’ll have a better idea” Donovan said. “He’s out right now.
“He’s still pretty sore from it, but the extent of it, I’m not sure yet.”
In six games and five starts with the Bulls, Simons has averaged 15.2 points and 28.4 minutes.
In 49 contests with the Celtics this season, the 26-year-old Simons averaged 14.2 points in 24.5 minutes. He was Portland’s first-round draft pick in 2018 and played the first seven of his eight NBA seasons with the Trail Blazers before being traded to Boston for Jrue Holiday in July.
The Bulls entered Sunday on a season-worst eight-game losing streak.

UCLA rolls past Wisconsin 80-60, celebrates first outright Big Ten title with 21st win in a row
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Lauren Betts had 19 points, 14 rebounds and five assists, and No. 2 UCLA defeated Wisconsin 80-60 for its 21st consecutive victory on Sunday, when the Bruins celebrated the program’s first outright Big Ten championship.
The Bruins (27-1, 17-0) are close to completing the first undefeated league season since 2014-15, when Maryland went 18-0. They finished 14-0 at home and have one road game remaining.
Wearing white title caps, the Bruins gathered at center court in a group hug and posed with the trophy.
UCLA had already clinched the title by the time it took the court, thanks to No. 13 Iowa’s 62-44 victory over sixth-ranked Michigan earlier in the day. Both Michigan and Iowa are tied for second with three losses each.
Gabriela Jaquez had 17 points and seven rebounds for the Bruins, who had five players in double figures.
Dorja Zaja scored 16 points and Lily Krahn added 13 for the Badgers (13-15, 5-12). They lost their eighth in a row and fell to 2-9 on the road.
Wisconsin struck for two quick baskets to open the third and get within seven. Destiny Howell scored and Ronnie Porter hit a 3-pointer.
But the Bruins took over, outscoring Wisconsin 24-15 to take a 65-49 lead into the fourth.
The Bruins led by 14 points on Jaquez’s 3-pointer early in the second quarter. The Badgers twice cut their deficit to eight points before trailing 41-29 at halftime.
On Senior Day, the Bruins honored Betts, Kiki Rice, Jaquez, Charlisse Leger-Walker, Gianna Kneepkens and Angela Dugalic with flowers before the game. Rice and Jaquez have spent their entire four-year careers at UCLA; the others transferred to Westwood.

Auston Matthews' USA teammates have a harsh message for Toronto Maple Leafs media
Auston Matthews’ USA teammates have a harsh message for Toronto Maple Leafs media originally appeared on The Sporting News.

The Hughes brothers wanted to make a point.
Speaking with reporters after Sunday’s gold medal game triumph for Team USA over Canada, they were alongside Auston Matthews, who will soon return to Toronto to resume play for the Maple Leafs.
Matthews was asked how winning will help him, but he just demurred, saying (via TSN’s Mark Masters), “I’m trying to live in the moment.”
Jack Hughes added his thoughts first: “Doesn’t matter what anyone says now. Auston Matthews is a winner.”
MORE: Jack Hughes, not a miracle, just magic
Then it was older brother Quinn Hughes: “That’s what the media in Toronto should be talking about. Auston led us to a championship.”
Matthews hasn’t won the big trophy in his time with the Maple Leafs, despite being a high-scoring center who earned the captain honor.
It’s not something he necessarily wants to be pressed into talking about, either. He ended the exchange Sunday with this: “I don’t have anything else to say.”
Fair enough.
In this case, the gold medal can speak for itself.

Matthews struggled a bit to open the Olympics, but in the knockout rounds, he was sharp.
Against Canada on Sunday, Matthews showed off an impressive work rate defensively, consistently getting back to disrupt the Canadian transition.
Who knows how Toronto will welcome Matthews back after he defeated Canada at the Olympics. In reality, Matthews won’t have to worry about that.
As the captain of Team USA, he led the Americans to gold. That speaks volumes.
