Studs and duds from the Buccaneers Week 6 win over the 49ers

Well, Bucs fans, you can cancel your Monday morning EKGs that you have been routinely needing through the first five weeks of the season.

For the first time all season, the Bucs did not have a game come down to a score in the final minute of the game as they won by a score of 30-19. Baker Mayfield solidified himself as the front-runner as the league MVP after his performance against the 49ers, and he was able to do what he did with the players he had at his disposal. The defense also had one of its better performances as it got after quarterback Mac Jones, forced him to throw two interceptions, and kept its talented offense in check. They gave up several big plays, but the defense bent but never broke as a result.

With that all in mind, we have some studs and duds to discuss.

Stud: Baker Mayfield

The MVP of the league through six weeks can be found in Tampa Bay on the 5-1 Bucs. Baker Mayfield showed again on Sunday why he is in a league of his own this season based on his play and leadership. The turnovers are at an all-time low for Mayfield, the offense has been scoring points as a result, and they are breaking opposing defenses all season, and Sunday was no different. He was the biggest stud performer of them all on Sunday, and he has been nearly every week all season long.

Dud: SirVocea Dennis

SirVocea Dennis was once again a liability on defense for the Bucs as they struggled to cover the middle of the field. He struggles to change direction, make tackles in open field, or to do much other than be tasked with the occasional blitz that shows his straight line ability. I get that the team has to keep trotting him out for chances to prove himself, but enough is enough. There will be a new linebacking group on the field in 2026, and Dennis should not be there.

Stud: Kameron and Tez Johnson

Kameron and Tez Johnson did not expect to be the wide receivers that led the Bucs unit by the end of Week 6, but they were when it was all said and done. When Emeka Egbuka went down with a hamstring injury, there was a thought that this team was doomed in terms of being able to remain efficient in their passing attack. What happened was that both young wide receivers stepped up, made big plays with impressive touchdowns, and showed they can rise to the occasion.

Dud: Team Health

The Bucs lost yet another notable player on the roster as they lost Emeka Egbuka to a hamstring injury. The players they have lost are enough to make even the biggest disbeliever wonder if there is something else at work here in terms of a curse, as this team cannot catch a break. On offense alone, they are now down Mike Evans, Emeka Egbuka, Chris Godwin, Luke Goedeke, Cody Mauch, and Bucky Irving heading into Week 7. Now, some of those players could return against the Lions, but most will still be out. This team has got to get healthy, and when they do that, they will solidify themselves as Super Bowl contenders.

Crazy stat from Patriots-Saints game highlights impact of officiating

The New England Patriots secured a victory on Sunday over the New Orleans Saints, but it didn’t come easily.

One shocking statistic reveals just how much the officiating played a part in Sunday’s win. According to ESPN Research, via ESPN’s Mike Reiss, the Patriots had 113 yards and a touchdown wiped out by pass interference calls.

The first call came on a pass from quarterback Drake Maye to wide receiver Demario Douglas that would have gone for a 61-yard touchdown. Instead, it was negated by a late whistle that came as the special teams unit was starting to run onto the field. The call came away from the play on veteran wideout Stefon Diggs.

The second notable penalty was offensive pass interference on Diggs once again. Maye heaved a deep ball up to the four-time Pro Bowl wide receiver, who made a beautiful grab against a defender. But the play was wiped off the board after another flag came flying.

Two different very soft OPI penalties on Stefon Diggs wipe out:

A 51 yard Stefon Diggs catch

— Bad Sports Refs (@BadSportsRefs) October 12, 2025

Despite the questionable officiating, the Patriots still managed to hold on for a 25-19 victory on the road. They had to battle both the Saints and the refs to get the job done in this outing.

If anything, they showcased their resilience when things weren’t going their way. They did what good teams often do. They found a way to win.

Charleroi will not let Rik De Mil leave during the season

Charleroi will not let Rik De Mil leave during the season

After Union St Gilloise tried to bring Rik De Mil to Brussels, Charleroi have made it clear that the head coach will not be leaving for any other side this season. As reported by HLN, Medhi Bayat, in charge at Charleroi, said that he rejected the move by Union for De Mil and said that the head coach will not be leaving Charleroi during the current campaign. It is believed that an agreement is there between Bayat and De Mil that he can leave at the end of the 2025/2026 Belgian Pro League campaign.

Over the summer, Antwerp were heavily linked with the Belgian head coach. It had been reported that, like the Union offer, De Mil was keen to take the opportunity. Yet Charleroi played hardball with Antwerp in terms of the fee required to take him away. It appears that, according to Bayat, Union respected the decision of Charleroi when their initial inquiry about the availability of De Mil was turned down. Instead, the side have shocked many by turning to David Hubert, who was head coach at second from bottom OH Leuven.

Inside the rule that wiped out the Jared Goff touchdown catch

On Sunday night, Detroit took the opening drive down the field and scored a touchdown. Until they didn’t.

A trick play on fourth and goal from the one, featuring quarterback Jared Goff going in motion before (barely) catching a touchdown pass from running back David Montgomery, was wiped out by a penalty. Illegal motion.

Five yards. The Lions settled for a field goal.

The relevant provision (as confirmed by the NFL) appears at Rule 7, Section 4, Article 2, Item 3: “It is legal for a T-Formation Quarterback to go in motion, whether he has placed his hands under center, on his knees, or on the body of the center. However, it is a false start if the action is quick and abrupt. If the player fails to come to a complete stop for at least one full second prior to the ball being snapped, it is illegal motion.”

Goff failed to come to a stop for at least one full second before the snap. That prompted the penalty.

For the Lions, the error came either from the play design or from the execution by Goff. Either way, he needed to stop for at least one full second before the ball was snapped. He didn’t. Which made it a penalty.

National High School Football Rankings: Top 25 Teams – Oct. 13

The national high school football rankings via Massey Ratings, has seen a consistent No. 1 at the top for three weeks in a row: Bixby Spartans of Oklahoma.

The Spartans remain the country’s top team, followed by St. John Bosco (Calif.) Braves andSouthlake Carroll(TX) at No. 3. Florida’s No. 1 IMG Academy and Georgia power Buford are No. 4-5, respectively. Which other teams were able to crack into the national rankings this week?

As the regular season begins to wind down around the country, teams around the nation continue their quest for the all mythical national crown.

The Massey Ratings, officially used during the BCS era, is a model that ranks sports teams by analyzing game outcomes, strength of schedule, and margin of victory.

Here is the latest National high school football Top 25 rankings, according to Massey as of Oct. 13.

1. Bixby (Okla.) (6-0)

There’s a new sheriff in town when it comes to the top team in the country and that program resides out of the state of Oklahoma as the Bixby Spartans (6-0) claimed the No. 1 spot for the third week in a row.

The Spartans have been unstoppable on offense, averaging a 62.1 points per game.

Senior quarterback Carson Kirby has been a steady hand behind center for Bixby, with the passer completing 91 of 121 passes for 1,473 yards, 21 touchdowns and just one interception. The Spartans have remained the top team out of Oklahoma and should run the table to a 10-0 regular season record with the way they’re playing.

Next up, Bixby returns home this week against winless Enid (0-5).

2. St. John Bosco (Calif.) (6-0)

After playing their toughest challenge of the season against St. Frances Academy (Md.) in a 21-14 victory a few weeks ago, St. John Bosco (6-0) had looked like they are in the proverbial driver’s seat to take the No. 1 spot after Bishop Gorman’s loss to rival Mater Dei.

The Braves’ latest win in the record books was a 48-0 beatdown of Orange Lutheran (Calif.) on the road, adding to the pile of evidence that they are the No. 1 team in the nation.

Through the first couple of weeks of the regular season, St. John Bosco only got to play two quarters against Manatee (Fla.), coming away with a 31-0 victory, the Braves returned home and routed Texas’ Eastwood 66-7.

The Braves plays the most brutal stretch of games in the final three of any team in the country. St. John Bosco goes on the road to face Santa Margarita Catholic before two home games versus Servite and rival Mater Dei on Halloween.

3. Southlake Carroll (Texas) (7-0)

The top-ranked team from the Lone Star State in these latest national high school football rankings are once again the undefeated Southlake Carroll Dragons after they romped another opponent, defeating Eaton in a 66-7 victory.

There’s little question that Southlake Carroll (7-0) might be playing the best football of the season behind the play of their high-octane offense. Leading the way is Pittsburgh commit Angelo Renda and Ohio State pledge Brock Boyd, with the pair fueling a Dragons’ offense that’s averaging 52 points per game this season.

Southlake Carroll has a chance to improve to 8-0 when they take on Northwest at home on Thursday night.

4. IMG Academy (Fla.) (7-0)

One thing has been made very clear this 2025 season: IMG Academy is not the same group from last year.

If you had any doubts of the Ascenders, look at their last three contests. Against Coronado (Nev.), Mandarin (Fla.), Phenix City Central (Ala.) and Venice (Fla.), with IMG Academy winning by a combined score of 212-41. Oof.

Sophomore four-star quarterback Jayden Wade was perfect in a recent outing against Phenix City Central, completing all 11 of his passes for 350 yards and four touchdowns.

The Ascenders is coming off a bye week and will be taking on the NFL Academy this Friday night.

5. Buford (Ga.) (6-0)

Are the Buford Wolves the prohibitive favorite to win Georgia’s Class 6A high school football classification?

The Wolves improved to 6-0 last week after a 58-7 defeat of Dacula, the latest blowout win in their march towards an undefeated campaign. If there is a team that seems primed to knock Grayson off of its pedestal, it looks like Buford would be that threat.

One of the top defensive front sevens in the Peach State resides in Buford, as they feature four-star edge rushers Bryce Perry-Wright (Texas A&M) and Dre Quinn (Clemson) along with four-star safety Tyriq Green (Georgia). Through five games, the defense has only yielded 74 points and has shown they can play with the best of ‘em.

Buford takes aim at 7-0 on Friday night when they clash with Central Gwinnett.

6. Allen (Texas) (6-0)

Other than Southlake Carroll, no other Texas team has been as consistent as the Allen Eagles lately. The Eagles latest blowout victory was a 62-14 dismantling of Princeton.

Allen (6-0) has been able to run through the opposing competition with ease, as they showed in a recent victory over a previously undefeated Plano group, 56-0. The offense has been sizzling behind the play of Arizona three-star wide receiver commit Caleb Smith (30 catches, 480 yards) and crew.

The Eagles look to remain undefeated when they face off against Plano West (5-2) at home.

7. Grayson (Ga.) (7-0)

Grayson posted another dominant performance last week when they cruised past Rockdale County, 58-10.

The loss of quarterback Travis Burgess for the rest of the season was a massive blow, but don’t tell the Grayson that it’s going to hold them back whatsoever. Grayson has done just fine, however, out-scoring opponents 362-71 through seven contests.

Texas five-star commit Tyler Atkinson has been playing very well for the Rams in the front seven, racking up 37 tackles, 10 for a loss and five sacks.

The Rams have a bye week before they take the field again on Oct. 24 against South Gwinnett on the road.

8. St. Frances Academy (Md.) (4-1)

St. Frances Academy (3-1) returned to inside of the Top 10 of the latest set of rankings after defeating The First Academy, 37-0, and followed it up with another shutout win, a 60-0 beatdown of St. Thomas More (Conn.).

The Panthers have leaned on Virginia commit Jae’Oyn Williams and 2027 running back Sa’Nir Brooks, as the pair helped them cruise past Chaminade-Madonna Prep at the Broward County Classic High School Football Showcase to begin the season. Only loss of the season thus far came against St. John Bosco (Calif.) on the road.

What separates St. Frances Academy from many of the nation’s elites is the play of their defense, led by five-star edge rusher Zion Elee, who is a Maryland commitment. Next up for the Panthers is a home game against Hun School (N.J.).

9. Carrollton (Ga.) (7-0)

The Carrollton Trojans continued their undefeated season with another blowout victory, a 56-7 rout of Chapel Hill last week.

The latest example of Carrollton’s dominance against one of the Southeast’s elite programs was a 43-7 rout of A.H. Parker of Alabama a couple weeks ago. There’s a lot to like about this Trojans club as they remain undefeated and rolling.

Some thought that with Julian Lewis gone and some graduations, losses on the roster from the 2024 team that Carrollton might not be where they were last fall. Well, think again. Another example of the Trojans being a national powerhouse was a 43-21 beatdown of Gainesville.

The Trojans will hit the road this Friday to take on East Coweta.

10. Bishop Gorman (Nev.) (7-1)

The Bishop Gorman Gaels make their way back into the Top 10 after a 58-0 thumping of Mojave last week.

After a 27-24 loss to Mater Dei last month, the Gaels followed it up with a 14-0 road victory in California against Carson Palmer’s Santa Margarita Catholic bunch. Now looking back at that win, it makes Bishop Gorman look better and better as each day goes by.

The Gaels finish out the regular season against winless Somerset Academy Losee and Shadow Ridge.

High School Football Rankings: Nos. 11 – 25

11. Thomas County Central (Ga.) (7-0)
12. Duncanville(TX) (3-1)
13.Aledo (Texas) (7-0)
14. North Crowley (Texas) (5-1)
15.Corner Canyon (Utah) (7-1)

16. Don Bosco Prep (N.J.) (6-0)
17. Mater Dei (5-2)
18. Prosper (Texas) (6-0)

Texans WR Nico Collins snubbed in laughable spot on PFF's WR power rankings

Nico Collins remains a legit No. 1 threat in the NFL despite the Houston Texans‘ slow offensive start. Do the numbers back that up, according to Pro Football Focus?

PFF’s Lauren Gray compiled the rankings through five weeks of the NFL season to pinpoint which pass-catchers have been among the league’s best. Heading into Houston’s Week 7 showdown against the Seattle Seahawks on Monday Night Football, Collins barely cracks the top 30, appearing in at No. 27.

“Collins caught four passes for 52 yards in the Texans‘ blowout win over the Ravens,” Gray wrote. “He created space across the middle for a 24-yard gain on the first play from scrimmage. He later caught a 10-yard touchdown in the second quarter to extend Houston’s lead to 13. Collins finished the day with a 149.6 passer rating when targeted. He now has three touchdown catches in his past four games.

“Collins’ 2025 stat line includes 22 catches for 312 yards, as well as 10 first downs and nine explosive gains. Three of his five targets in Week 5 came from between the numbers, where he’s been targeted 16 times through the first five games. Collins has caught 13 of those passes for 153 yards and six first downs, earning himself a 72.7 PFF receiving grade.”

It might seem crazy to see a receiver like Collins barely cracking the top 30, but a slow start for the offense in general this season likely has been the biggest factor. Teams have been triggering on Collins’ 6-foot-4 frame and ability to win over single-man coverage, thus leading to more double coverages and forced passes downfield by C.J. Stroud.

He has shown himself to be back to his playmaker self the last two weeks, mostly in the win over Baltimore at M&T Bank Stadium. Coming off the bye week, it will be interesting to see how he responds to Stroud’s tempo and consistency as a playmaker.

The Texans hit the road for a showdown at Lumen Field on ABC next Monday, Oct. 20.

Report PSG considering €60m offer for Roma star Kone

Report PSG considering €60m offer for Roma star Kone

Reports in Italy claim that PSG are considering making a surprise €60m offer for Roma’s star midfielder Manu Kone, who is making a strong impression back in his home country.

CdS: PSG considering staggering offer for Kone

According to reports from Corriere dello Sport, PSG are strongly interested in a potential deal for Roma and France midfielder Kone, who is valued in the region of €50m by his current employers.

According to Monday’s report, PSG’s interest is so strong, that they could potentially be minded to go above Roma’s asking price, to a figure in the region of €60m, in order to fend off interest from other clubs and to seal a deal without a long negotiation process with the Giallorossi.

LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND – AUGUST 09: Manu Kone of AS Roma during the pre-season friendly match between Everton and AS Roma at Hill Dickinson Stadium on August 09, 2025 in Liverpool, England. (Photo by Jan Kruger/Getty Images)

The 24-year-old is making a strong impression on the France national team, despite being left on the bench for the recent 3-0 win over Azerbaijan. He is expected to come into the starting line-up against Iceland on Monday night.

Corriere dello Sport claims that ‘everybody is crazy about Kone’ at the moment, that his family, friends, former colleagues and residents from his hometown have all been interviewed in the press in recent weeks, and that he is quickly becoming an ‘unexpected’ star of Didier Deschamps’s national team.

Roma, as things stand, reportedly have no interest in letting one of their star players leave, especially after such a strong start to the Serie A season, which joint-top with Napoli before the October international break.

However, Roma are still restricted by financial fair play regulations, and given that they brought Kone in for a reasonable sum of €18m last summer, a €60m offer from PSG would do wonders for the club’s accounts and capital gains.

Jon Rahm won't play until LIV Golf opener next year, achieving career first in 2025

Jon Rahm has won every year of his career since turning pro. Until this year.

And he said Sunday that won’t change.

Speaking after a T-9 finish at the Spanish Open, Rahm told Ten Golf he was going to take a nearly four-month break from competition, set to make his return for the LIV Golf opener in 2026.

“I’ve never had three months off, but I’m looking forward to it,” Rahm said. “Other athletes have it, and we’ll see. I’m lucky to be able to go home now, have a preseason, be a father, be with my family, and well, if I see that it’s too much, then maybe I won’t do it next year, but I’m looking forward to it.”

It may have been a winless season, but it wasn’t without success for the Spaniard. He won the LIV Golf season-long individual championship over Joaquin Niemann, who lifted five trophies, and was a part of the victorious European Ryder Cup team last month at Bethpage Black.

The Spanish Open was his fourth DP World Tour start, the minimum needed to retain membership, though he still has appealed fines levied by the tour on him for joining LIV Golf. Those appeals have allowed him, as well as Legion XIII teammate Tyrrell Hatton and others, to compete on the circuit.

Last month at the BMW PGA Championship, Rahm joked he had forgotten about the appeals and has long said he won’t pay the fines. “I have no idea. I have no clue,” Rahm said of the ongoing process. “To be fair, I completely forgot about, which is a good thing. I hope I forget about it until it happens.”

And now, Rahm will head into the shadows for four months until he competes in his third season for LIV Golf, starting in Riyadh in February.

Bears vs Commanders Predictions, Picks & Best Bets for Monday Night Football Today

The Washington Commanders host the Chicago Bears in Monday Night Football action this week.

These teams clashed last year, with Washington winning on a last-second Hail Mary from Jayden Daniels.

My Bears vs. Commanders predictions are betting on an easier victory for Washington this time around.

Here are my best free NFL picks for this Week 6 clash on October 13.

Want to make sure Covers shows up often in your Google search results and Discover feed?
Simplyclick here and add Covers as one of your “source preferences”.

Bears vs Commanders prediction

Bears vs Commanders Best bet: Commanders -4.5 (-110)

Caleb Williams and Jayden Daniels will always be linked to each other after going first and second in the draft last year. Williams was the most hyped prospect in recent memory but has been inconsistent so far in his career with the Chicago Bears

Meanwhile, Daniels put together the best season by a rookie quarterback in NFL history and has immediately turned around the Washington Commanders franchise.

Daniels missed Weeks 3 and 4 with a knee sprain but returned last week to lead Washington to a 27-10 win against the Chargers. The Bears are fresh off a bye and have won back-to-back games after an ugly start to the year. That said, those victories look less impressive in hindsight.

They beat a Cowboys squad that lost it’s best player to an injury in Week 3 and they won on a last-second TD against a subpar Raiders squad in Week 4. They also benefited from three interceptions in both of those games and the efficient Daniels hasn’t been picked off in his last five contests.

The Bears are second-last in the league in rushing yards allowed per game (164.5) while ranking dead-last in yards allowed per carry (6.1). That’s bad news against a Commanders attack that leads the NFL with 156.4 rushing yards per game.

Washington is ninth in the league in defensive success rate while Chicago ranks just 31st. I’ll back the squad with the superior defense and the more reliable QB at home.

Bears vs Commanders MNF same-game parlay

The Commanders need to get the ball into the hands of speedster Jacory Croskey-Merritt against a terrible Bears run defense.

The rookie RB came out of nowhere to rush for 82 yards on 10 carries in Week 1 but was limited to 19 carries and 90 yards over his next three games. They finally fed him the ball last week and he rewarded them with 111 rushing yards and two scores on 14 carries.

Since I’m expecting a negative game script for the Bears it makes sense to take the Over on Williams’ passing yards props. Especially since the Commanders are extremely weak in the secondary and rank 27th in the league in coverage grade per PFF.

Bears vs Commanders SGP

Commanders -4.5Jacory Croskey-Merritt Over 63.5 rushing yardsCaleb Williams Over 232.5 passing yards

Our big-ticket SGP: Jacory Has Merit!

While Bears have been getting gashed on the ground, they’ve allowed just seven rush attempts and 62 rushing yards against opposing quarterbacks.

Daniels’ mobility might not be at 100% and he could be less reluctant to run due to the knee injury he suffered in Week 2.

Bears vs Commanders SGP

Commanders -4.5Jacory Croskey-Merritt Over 63.5 rushing yardsCaleb Williams Over 232.5 passing yardsJayden Daniels Under 45.5 rushing yards

Rouven Schröder on the verge of being appointed Borussia Mönchengladbach sporting director

Rouven Schröder on the verge of being appointed Borussia Mönchengladbach sporting director

Kicker and Sky Germany both report that Borussia Mönchengladbach are on the verge of appointing Rouven Schröder as their new sporting director.

Gladbach have been searching for a sporting director following the resignation of Roland Virkus after their 6-4 loss to Eintracht Frankfurt, and Schröder is the desired replacement.

At the end of 2024, Schröder moved from RB Leipzig to sister club Red Bull Salzburg and has a contract valid until 2028 in Austria. This means that Gladbach must agree a fee with Salzburg to sign Schröder, the fee is said to be around €700k.

BMG had tried to hire Schröder back in 2022 to replace Max Eberl once he left to take a sabbatical, but a deal was unable to come to fruition.

Schröder has previously held similar sporting director roles at Schalke, Werder Bremen and Mainz.

Schröder’s first big task at Gladbach:

Once Schröder’s arrival is confirmed, he will be put straight to work. His first big task as sporting director would be to decide on the future of Eugen Polanski. The interim head coach has been given until the November international break as Gladbach prioritised signing a replacement for Virkus.

Ironically, Adi Hütter is now available as a potential head coach signing. Hütter was previously head coach of Gladbach right at the beginning of the Virkus reign, but was fired due to a poor first season. Another former head coach, Marco Rose, is also still available. Rose previously worked with Schröder at Leipzig.
