The Detroit Lions are among the NFL’s elite teams because they are committed to a style of playing with attitude, grit, and moxie. Among the players who embody that spirit is safety Brian Branch, though it sometimes gets him in trouble.
Branch is in his third NFL season, and he has developed a reputation for being a hard-nosed player who sometimes gets carried away with the physicality. As a result, he has been subject to many fines during his time in the league.
These fines were a topic of discussion during Week 6 of the 2025 season, as Branch was at the center of a fight between his Lions and the Kansas City Chiefs at the end of “Sunday Night Football.”
“Branch … has a history of multiple fines,” NBC announcer Mike Tirico said during the skirmish. “Fined three times this year already. Seven times last year.”
Here is more on the fines levied upon the Lions’ safety.

Brian Branch fines timeline
Branch has been fined over a dozen times through his first three seasons in the NFL.
His first fines came after Week 4 of his rookie season, and, as outlined by Tirico, he picked up seven fines during Year 2 in the NFL. It is worth noting that Branch has received multiple fines for infractions committed in the same game. So, while the incidents are isolated, they aren’t always so spread out.
He has been fined over $100,000 in his career. Here is a complete list from Pro Sports Transactions.
Sept. 26, 2025: Branch was fined $11,598 for a low block committed against the Baltimore Ravens during Week 3 of the season.

Sept. 12, 2025: The NFL issues two fines to Branch for his actions during a Week 1 loss to the Green Bay Packers.
He was dealt two $11,593 fines — one for a facemask and another for taunting. The $23,186 penalty stemmed from an altercation in which he got into a fight with Packers TE Tucker Kraft.
As the two tussled with one another, Branch removed Kraft’s helmet and then tossed it away.

Jan. 3, 2025: Branch was fined $10,128 for impermissible use of the helmet (unnecessary roughness) as he committed a hit during a “Monday Night Football” game against the San Francisco 49ers.
It was Branch’s seventh and final fine of the 2024 season.

Nov. 8, 2024: It was a double-fine for Branch, who was ejected for helmet-to-helmet hit against Green Bay in Week 9 of the season.
As he walked toward the Lambeau Field locker rooms, Branch gave the middle finger to Packers fans. He was fined $10,128 for the hit and $10,128 for the obscene gesture.

Dec. 23, 2023: The NFL fined Branch $8,103 for a helmet-to-helmet hit committed in a Week 15 win over the Denver Broncos.
Oct. 6, 2023: The first fines of Branch’s NFL career stemmed from two separate incidents in a Week 4 win over the Packers.
Branch was dealt two fines worth $8,103 each for a helmet-to-helmet hit and a horse collar tackle against Detroit’s divisional foe. Less than 5 weeks into his NFL career, Branch had been docked $16,206.
Solo Jimmy Uso No Match For Bronson Reed On WWE Raw, But Gets Help With The Vision After
Bronson Reed at WWE SummerSlam 2025 – Elsa/Getty Images
It’s been a very eventful weekend for “Big” Bronson Reed following his victory over Roman Reigns at Crown Jewel, and the Australian continued his excellent run of form by making light work of a heavily injured Jimmy Uso on the October 13 episode of “WWE Raw.”
Uso came out of the gates hot with a number of strikes, but Reed took control of the match by targeting the heavily taped up midsection of his opponent as the match entered its first commercial break. The Australian star spent the majority of the break grinding his opponent down, and while Uso did try and find some openings, Reed was just too powerful to overcome, who even got time in between moments of aggression to taunt the fans. Coming out of the commercial break, Uso was worn down badly as he was whipped hard from turnbuckle to turnbuckle.
With that said, Reed went to the well one time too many as Uso rolled out of the way of a senton and a shoulder block. He would use a series of right hands and a thrust kick to make a slight comeback, but couldn’t get the big man up for a Samoan Drop. “Big Jim” hit the Uso in the Wind for a near fall, but the high risk move took it Uso thanks to the injured ribs as he collapsed trying once again to hit a Samoan Drop. This ended up being Uso’s downfall as Reed hit a standing senton, before taking to the top for a big Tsunami for the victory.
After the match, Uso was trying to get himself up, but Bron Breakker hit the ring and landed two huge spears on “Big Jim.” However, as Breakker went to hit a third spear through the barricade, Jey Uso’s music hit and Jimmy’s brother ran down to try and make the save. The Vision did get their licks in, but the former WWE World Heavyweight Champion was left standing tall, despite Jimmy not being too happy about needing help from his brother.

Flyers' starting goalie decision has reached a confusing moment
Flyers’ starting goalie decision has reached a confusing moment originally appeared on The Sporting News.
Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The Philadelphia Flyers don’t have everything figured out yet.
They can’t decide who their starting goalie is.
Samuel Ersson is the returning incumbent. But the Flyers signed Daniel Vladar in free agency.
They aren’t picking just one yet.
Head coach Rick Tocchet told the Philadelphia Inquirer “that the plan is to rotate the two for a while and see who takes the lead.”
Ersson is a 25-yaer old lefty from Sweden. He was a fifth-round pick by the Flyers in 2018.
Last season, Ersson started 45 games and had 22 wins. He put up an .883 save percentage and a 3.14 goals against average.
MORE: Ben Kindel matches Sidney Crosby’s oddly specific Penguins NHL history
This season, Ersson has played once, a game that went to overtime in which he saved 35-of-39 shots.
Vladar is a 28-year old lefty from the Czech Republic. He originally entered the NHL as a third-round pick of the Bruins in 2015.
Vladar spent the past four seasons with the Calgary Flames. Last season, he started 29 games, recording 12 regulation wins while putting up an .898 save percentage and 2.80 goals against average.
This season, Vladar lost his first start in tough-luck fashion, saving 32-of-34 shots on his goal.
The Flyers will have to make sense of this eventually to allow the goalie they feel is best to find a rhythm. But for now, Ersson and Vladar will have to be good at sharing.

Mariners at Blue Jays – ALCS Game 2 prediction: Odds, expert picks, starting pitchers, trends, and stats
Its a quick turnaround for the Blue Jays and Mariners as they prepare for Game 2 of the ALCS this afternoon in Toronto. Logan Gilbert is slated to take the mound for Seattle against Toronto rookie Trey Yesavage.
Seattle took Game 1 by the score of 3-1. George Springer went yard on the first pitch of the game from Bryce Miller but that was one of only two hits the Seattle right hander and for that matter pitching staff allowed on the evening. Cal Raleigh homered for Seattle in the sixth to even the score at one and Jorge Polanco drove in the other two runs for Seattle.
Gilbert last took the ball in the Mariners’ 3-2, 15-inning ALDS-clinching win over the Detroit Tigers. He came on in relief in the 10th and 11th innings allowing three hits but no runs. Prior to that Gilbert started and went six innings allowing but one run in Game 3 of the ALDS.
Yesavage has not pitched since Game 2 of the ALDS against the Yankees on October 5. That night, the right hander was special shutting out the Yankees over 5.1 innings. He did not allow a hit and walked just one batter. Of the 16 outs he recorded, 11 were by strikeout.
Lets dive a little deeper into Game 2 and perhaps find a sweat or two.

Williams F1 junior Luke Browning gets FP1 outing at Mexico GP
Motorsport photo
Williams driving academy member Luke Browning will get his latest Formula 1 outing when he replaces Carlos Sainz in Friday FP1 in Mexico.
Browning stepped into Williams’ 2025 car during FP1 in Bahrain and will now get his second outing in the FW47 in Mexico City, which is expected to be a popular venue for the mandated rookie FP1 sessions.
“I’m hugely grateful to be given another chance to drive in a free practice session with Williams and to experience the FW47 for a second time,” Browning was quoted by Williams.
“I’ve been working hard to prepare for the session so I can make the most of this amazing opportunity and help the team plan for the race weekend ahead.
“I can’t wait to get back into an F1 car and I’m incredibly grateful to everyone in the Driver Academy and at Williams for their trust and support.”
Luke Browning, Williams

Browning remains in title contention in F2, heading to the final two weekends in Qatar and Abu Dhabi in third place in the standings. The 23-year-old Briton, the winner of the 2022 Aston Martin Autosport BRDC Award, has dovetailed those duties with an extensive F1 programme with Williams, including testing of a two-year-old FW45 and plenty of simulator work.
“Luke has had a strong season in Formula 2 so far, consistently showing his pace across a range of circuits and racing conditions,” said Williams sporting director Sven Smeets.
“He has continued to support the team through his simulator work and the TPC programme, preparing him well for his next free practice session. We look forward to seeing him take to the track in Mexico as he continues to build his experience as a Williams Racing Academy Driver.”

5 Penn State storylines for Week 8: James Franklin fired, new QB & more
Penn State has reached the midway point of the regular season, and big changes are going down this week. Penn State was already about to prepare for one of its trickier road trips of the season with a primetime game in Kinnick Stadium to face the Iowa Hawkeyes awaiting them at the end of this week. But the Nittany Lions will start this week with a major coaching change in place after announcing the firing of James Franklin. Penn State also breaks in a new starting quarterback this week. It is sure to be a busy week for Penn State football this week.
Here are the five storylines we will be following this week as Penn State prepares for its road trip to Iowa on Saturday night.
Penn State hops on the coaching carousel
Penn State made what feels like a necessary change, and it is up for debate if now was the right time to make the move or not. But the decision has been made and now the program is getting a ticket to the coaching carousel. With the current state of the coaching carousel for this season, Penn State is currently the most attractive job on the market, and odds are it could be the highest-profile coaching vacancy to fill this year when all is said and done.
Athletics director Pat Kraft has said the school has a lot to offer any worthwhile coaching candidate, and there will be no shortage of notable names being thrown around as potential successors to Franklin in Happy Valley. Some will be more realistic than others, but the search is now underway. However, do not expect any closure on this search any time soon as coaching hires will likely be made toward the end of the season. Given the jump Penn State has on the job search, a new coach should probably by known by the end of the regular season or shortly afterward. So hang in there. It could be a little while before we know for sure.
Terry Smith takes the helm as interim head coach
With Franklin removed as head coach, longtime assistant and former Penn State player Terry Smith will take on the role of interim head coach. He gets thrown into the role at a tough spot on the schedule with a road trip to Iowa coming up this week and back-to-back games against Ohio State and Indiana coming up after that (with a bye week after the Iowa game to prepare). Smith going 0-3 in his head coaching debut for Penn State may not be an unlikely scenario, but would you have expected any better out of Franklin at this point?
Either way, this will also serve as a bit of an open audition for Smith as a candidate to retain the job in 2026 and beyond. If Smith manages to lead Penn State to a strong finish this season with some surprising wins along the way, maybe this season will not be a total lost cause.
Eathan Grunkemeyer jumping in the offensive spotlight
The head coaching change is just one of the major storylines ongoing at Penn State. The biggest story before Franklin was fired would have centered squarely on the starting quarterback. With Drew Allar suffering a season-ending injury in this past weekend’s loss to Northwestern, Penn State’s offense will be handed over to Ethan Grunkemeyer. Grunkemeyer played just one snap for Penn State after losing Allar to his injury on Saturday, a fourth-down that saw Grunkemeyer stuffed while trying to pick up a first down on the ground.
Penn State has not given Grunkemeyer too many opportunities on the field in his young college career, but he will be thrown right into the starting role this week. And getting your first start on the road at Iowa is hardly the ideal spot.
What is Penn State’s player morale?
Say what you may about having an interim coach and an inexperienced starting quarterback making his debut on the road, but this may be the biggest wild card factor in everything. After all of the talk about national title hopes, and even Big Ten title hopes, going down the drain over the past three weeks and seeing their head coach shown the door and key players taking significant injuries, what exactly is the psyche of this Penn State football team? Everything that has transpired could easily lead to a team losing interest in the second half of the season while focusing solely on individual futures, or this team could come together and play their best overall football game of the season.
Much of how this team comes out on Saturday night will rely on the coaching staff shoving aside the headlines and finding a way to commit to a strong finish to this season no matter what has already happened. If the player buy-in is there, then we could still see some good football the rest of the way. This week’s performance against Iowa will be very telling of the overall team mood.
Penn State recruiting takes an immediate hit
Any time there is a coaching change, especially in the middle of a season, the recruiting is going to take some immediate hits. That was the case for Penn State in the wake of the James Franklin firing as Penn State’s entire Class of 2027 backed out of their individual commitments. That included one of its key in-state recruits, running back Kemon Spell. This is not to say those recruits will not commit back to Penn State in their recruiting process, but it makes sense for any player to step back from a commitment while waiting to see what happens with their potential future school.
The Class of 2026 held firm as of Sunday, but sudden changes could happen at any moment, given the nature of the recruiting game. Calls to Penn State commits were likely happening as soon as yesterday afternoon, so we will keep an eye on things for the current and future recruiting cycles. The sooner Penn State lands on a coaching hire, the better things will eventually be for the recruiting efforts.

'Another celebrity boss? No, I've earned my chance'
Robbie Savage is in his second full campaign as a manager, having guided Macclesfield to promotion from the Northern Premier League in 2024-25 [Getty Images]
Robbie Savage says he wishes he had turned down Strictly Come Dancing until after his coaching career – to avoid being labelled “another celebrity manager”.
The Forest Green Rovers boss is eyeing a first appearance in the FA Cup first round as a head coach when his side visit sixth-tier Worthing on Monday (19:30 BST).
Former Wales midfielder Savage, who featured on the hit BBC show in 2011, shortly after ending his playing career, has guided Rovers to second in the National League.
Appointed in July after success in his first managerial role at Macclesfield, Savage remains best known for his media profile and punditry – and will be back in the spotlight for the final match of the fourth qualifying round.
“Looking back now, would I have done Strictly before I was a manager? Probably not – that would probably have come after,” Savage, 50, told BBC Points West.
“But I’m a personality and I believe I’m an infectious character who tries to get the best out of people.
“I’m just a normal manager – an inexperienced manager giving it his best with a great staff. I’m just a passionate man who cares about whichever club he’s at.
“[Some might ask] ‘Oh, is it another celebrity manager?’ No – I’m a hard-working individual who loves football, who’s earned the opportunity.”
Rovers boss Savage ‘miles away’ from managing WalesForest Green can be ‘unstoppable’ – Savage
‘I’ve embraced everything’ at eco-friendly club
Based in Nailsworth, which has a population of less than 6,000, Gloucestershire club Forest Green were taken over by green energy pioneer Dale Vince in 2010.
After a rapid rise, they spent seven seasons in the English Football League before relegation in 2024-25 and defeat in last season’s play-off semi-final.
Vince has raised Forest Green’s profile by implementing eco-friendly initiatives such as making Rovers all-vegan and winning recognition from the United Nations as the world’s first carbon-neutral football club in 2018.
Savage’s 22-year-old son Charlie – who has since joined Reading and been capped by Wales – spent the second half of the 2022-23 season on loan at Forest Green from Manchester United.
“Dale’s brilliant,” said Savage, who played 346 Premier League games for Leicester City, Birmingham City, Blackburn Rovers and Derby County.
“We get on so well. I knew him from when Charlie was here. He cares.
“The food’s high in protein, it’s high in fibre. It’s a brilliant football club run by passionate, caring people who want you to do well, so I’ve embraced everything.
“Dale’s not employing me because of my profile. He said he didn’t know I was a celebrity – I was Charlie’s dad.
“That’s nice, because he’s appointed me because of what I did as a player and what I did as a manager.”

From taking calls to making calls
Savage has eight wins and one defeat from his first 14 league matches with Forest Green, likening the spirit there to the connection he enjoys with ex-England striker Chris Sutton as part of co-hosting duties on BBC Radio 5 Live football phone-in 606.
“Myself and Chris have a great camaraderie and togetherness, and that’s what I’ve got with my players and staff,” he said, praising the “warmth” and “friendliness” of people in the Cotswolds.
“The training ground’s amazing. It’s a beautiful part of the world to live in. It can be a bit lonely at times without your family, but that’s one of the sacrifices you make as a manager.
“I’m a football person who’s been addicted to, and obsessed with, football all his life. I don’t fear failure – never have.
“My two boys, Charlie and Freddie, said to me when I was going to take the job, ‘what’s the worst that can happen? You can get the sack, but give it your best shot’.
“I said: ‘Do you know what? Yeah, that’s right.'”
FA Cup ‘a brilliant competition’
Monday’s hosts Worthing are 16th in the National League South and will be playing their first match since the reappointment of manager Adam Hinshelwood.
The former Brighton & Hove Albion defender led The Rebels to the FA Cup first round and the play-off final during the final season of his first spell in charge between 2017-24.
Savage has not scrutinised Hinshelwood’s team too closely because he believes Rovers have concentrated too much on their opponents amid a run of two draws and a 1-0 defeat at home by Rochdale on October 4.
“The [TNT Sports] cameras are there because everybody thinks it’s going to be an upset,” said Savage, adding he “understands” that because he played in the early stages of the competition with Crewe Alexandra, who he joined in 1994 after starting his career at Manchester United.
“It’s a brilliant competition. [But] I’ve not even thought about Worthing. It’s all about us.
“We know where they are in the table and how they play, but I’m not showing my players videos of Worthing. We’re going to give the utmost respect to a good side.”
The draw for the first round proper will take place shortly before kick-off at the 4,000-capacity Sussex Transport Community Stadium, where Savage does not expect the artificial pitch to prove a levelling factor.
“It’s the same for both sides and you can play fantastic football on it,” he explained.
“No excuses. If we get beaten by Worthing, I’m not going to blame the surface.”
