African players in Europe: Guessand opens his Palace goal account

Alex Iwobi (L) celebrates after his goal clinched a 3-1 Premier League victory for Fulham at Sunderland. (ANDY BUCHANAN)

Ivorian Evann Guessand scored his first goal for Crystal Palace in a 1-0 Premier League win over bottom club Wolverhampton Wanderers at the weekend.

The 24-year-old striker, who moved to the London club from Aston Villa in a mid-season loan deal, struck in the 90th minute at Selhurst Park.

Last month, Guessand helped defending champions Ivory Coast reach the Africa Cup of Nations quarter-finals, where they lost to Egypt.

AFP Sport highlights African headline-makers in the major European leagues:

ENGLAND

EVANN GUESSAND (Crystal Palace), TOLU AROKODARE (Wolves)

Guessand scored to secure just a second win in 16 games for the Eagles after Arokodare had missed a first-half penalty for Wolves. Nigerian striker Arokodare’s spot-kick was saved by Dean Henderson. Guessand produced a fine finish at the near post to ease any lingering fears of his side being dragged into a relegation battle.

ALEX IWOBI (Fulham)

Iwobi created Fulham’s opening goal for Raul Jimenez and then rounded off the scoring himself in a 3-1 win at Sunderland. The Nigeria international coolly chipped beyond Robin Roefs to register his first goal of 2026.

SPAIN

ADEMOLA LOOKMAN (Atletico Madrid)

Nigeria international Lookman continued his superb start to life in the Spanish capital by scoring his first La Liga goal in a 4-2 win over Espanyol. The forward has netted four times in his first six games for the club across all competitions.

ERIC BAILLY (Real Oviedo)

Ivorian centre-back Bailly scored his first goal for Oviedo since arriving at the Asturian club last year in a thrilling 3-3 draw with Real Sociedad. Bailly rescued a point by rising highest to nod home a 93rd-minute equaliser from a corner.

PAPE GUEYE (VILLARREAL)

The Senegal midfielder converted a penalty deep in first-half added time to give third-placed Villarreal a 2-1 home win over lowly Valencia. Gueye scored in extra-time to give Senegal victory over hosts Morocco last month in the Africa Cup of Nations final.

GERMANY

YAN DIOMANDE (RB Leipzig)

Yan Diomande was only credited with one assist, but he was responsible for creating both of Christoph Baumgartner’s goals in RB Leipzig’s 2-2 Bundesliga home draw with Borussia Dortmund. After 20 minutes, Diomande laid off a low pass for Baumgartner to tap home. Shortly before the break, the 19-year-old winger again bamboozled the visiting defence. He found David Raum, who squared the ball for Baumgartner to score again. In his first season in top-flight football, Diomande has eight goals and six assists in 22 league games.

FRANCE

MARSHALL MUNETSI (Paris FC)

The Zimbabwean, on loan from Wolverhampton Wanderers, scored his first goal for Ligue 1 strugglers Paris FC in a 1-1 draw at mid-table Toulouse. Set up by Alimani Gory, Marshall Munetsi found the bottom left corner of the net with a shot from the centre of the box.

Napoli goalkeeper labels football a “farce” in social media outburst after defeat to Atalanta

Napoli goalkeeper labels football a “farce” in social media outburst after defeat to Atalanta

This Sunday saw a major shake-up in the Serie A title picture, with both Milan and Napoli losing out in key fixtures. The latter’s 2-1 loss to Atalanta caused a particular stir, as third-choice keeper Nikita Contini took to social media.

The clash saw Napoli fall to their sixth defeat of the league campaign and lose their grip on third place. After two second-half headers from Mario Pasalic and Lazar Samardzic overturned Sam Beukema’s 18th-minute opener, the Ukraine-born stopper had some choice words regarding two major flashpoints.

First, VAR overturned a Partenopei penalty appeal before the discontent evolved to rage as a Miguel Gutierrez goal was ruled out for a foul in the build-up by Rasmus Hojlund.

After witnessing this from the fringes, Contini let off steam on Instagram, speaking of demanding a more “real” game, less mediated by VAR, On-Field Review, and the overly restrictive on-screen reviews.

Contini, who has lived in Italy since he was three, harked back to old days of Calcio, when football was about “real fights and tackles,” but also “real insults and tackles,” with fans who could follow their team wherever they went.

This scolding analysis, from the goalkeeper who was part of the side that won a Scudetto and a Super Cup, concludes with a somewhat sad conclusion. Expressed in authentic Neapolitan dialect: football today is a “farce,” when it should be “a serious thing.”

Lyon’s Pavel Šulc suffers suspected hamstring injury ahead of Olympico

Lyon’s Pavel Šulc suffers suspected hamstring injury ahead of Olympico

Olympique Lyonnais forward Pavel Šulc sustained a muscle injury during Sunday’s 3-1 defeat to RC Strasbourg Alsace, casting doubt over his availability for next weekend’s Olympico against Olympique de Marseille – according to RMC Sport.

Lyon saw their 13-game winning streak come to an abrupt end in eastern France, but the greater concern for Paulo Fonseca may be the fitness of his top scorer. Šulc was forced off after just 28 minutes at the Stade de la Meinau, clutching the back of his thigh.

Speaking post-match to Ligue1+, Fonseca confirmed that the Czech international is dealing with a “muscular problem at the back of the thigh.” The 25-year-old is set to undergo medical examinations on Monday to determine the severity of the issue.

The timing could hardly be worse. Lyon currently sit third in Ligue 1 with 45 points, five clear of Marseille, and travel to the Stade Vélodrome on Sunday evening (20:45 CET) in a fixture that could prove decisive in the race for Champions League qualification.

Šulc has been central to Lyon’s resurgence this season. Signed last summer from Viktoria Plzeň for €7.5 million, he has registered 13 goals and seven assists in 31 appearances across all competitions, quickly establishing himself as one of the most influential attacking players in the division.

He notably scored the winner in the reverse fixture against Marseille at the Groupama Stadium on 31 August in his first goal for the club.GFFN | George Boxall

Lecce 0-2 Inter Milan – Armenian Veteran Breaks Long Serie A Away Drought To Open The Scoring

Lecce 0-2 Inter Milan – Armenian Veteran Breaks Long Serie A Away Drought To Open The Scoring

Inter Milan veteran Henrikh Mkhitaryan broke the deadlock in Saturday’s 2-0 Serie A win over Lecce.

According to FCInterNews, it was the 37-year-old’s first away league goal since October 2022.

The Nerazzurri had to wait until the 75th minute to break down Eusebio Di Francesco’s stubborn defense.

Furthermore, they needed second-half substitute Henrikh Mkhitaryan to end his long-standing scoring drought in Serie A away games.

Indeed, the former Roma star last scored on the road almost four years ago.

Inter Milan Ace Henrikh Mkhitaryan Ends Serie A Away Drought vs Lecce

Mkhitaryan has racked up 35 goals and 35 assists in Serie A since swapping Arsenal for Roma in 2019.

However, the Armenian midfielder has fared much better on home turf, as evidenced by his shockingly long duck on the road.

Still, Mkhitaryan couldn’t have picked a better moment to end it.

Indeed, his late heroics set the tone for Inter’s seventh consecutive Serie A victory.

With AC Milan losing to Parma at home yesterday, the Nerazzurri are now ten points clear at the summit.

Eagles are named the best landing spot for a top free agent cornerback

The NFL off-season is underway, and we’re a little over two weeks away from the start of the new league year and the legal tampering period. Philadelphia’s offensive approach has changed since the team added Sean Mannion as offensive coordinator and Josh Grizzard as passing game coordinator. Even with the solid hires, the Eagles‘ roster will likely undergo further changes this offseason. The Birds have 21 players who’ll test the restricted or unrestricted free-agent market during the 2026 NFL offseason, and key decisions to make on critical skill players. Several key factors include a pending contract extension for Jalen Carter and the contract status for star tight end Dallas Goedert.

We previously looked at players the Eagles would target if there were no salary cap, and one big name to monitor is Seahawks athletic cornerback Tariq Woolen. He’s made several free agent lists, and PFF named Philadelphia as his best fit on the open market.

Tariq Woolen’s tools should entice the Eagles: Although reckless at times, Woolen possesses unmatched measurables for a cornerback. He produced the second-highest lockdown percentage (65%) in the NFL this past season.

The outside CB2 position was a weak link for the Eagles’ secondary in 2025. Adoree’ Jackson struggled, earning a 54.1 PFF coverage grade while being targeted on 18% of his coverage snaps, the third-highest rate among cornerbacks with at least 400 coverage snaps this past season.

Elite coverage play helped pave the way for the Eagles’ run to the Super Bowl in 2024, and this potential signing presents an opportunity to again reach those heights.

Although reckless at times, Woolen possesses unmatched measurables for a cornerback, ranking in the top percentile in height (6-foot-4), arm length (34 inches) and speed (4.26-second 40-yard dash).

Woolen is a legitimate starting cornerback with All-Pro potential and doesn’t turn 27 until May. His aggressive skills could allow Vic Fangio to be more flexible and more aggressive with his calls.

Heidenreich is a versatile running back who became only the second player in FBS history since 1956 to achieve both 475 or more rushing yards and 925 or more receiving yards in the same season. The only other player to accomplish this feat is Tavon Austin from West Virginia, who did so in 2012, recording 643 rushing yards and 1,289 receiving yards. Heidenreich holds the school record for the most career receiving touchdowns, with a total of 16. Additionally, his six touchdown catches in each of the last two seasons tied the school’s single-season record.

Recent history suggests Commanders won't pursue Bucs star Mike Evans

While everyone focuses on the Washington Commanders‘ need for defensive help this offseason, there are also needs on offense, too. Washington needs a receiving tight end, a running back and, perhaps most importantly, a legit starting wide receiver opposite Terry McLaurin.

George Pickens of the Dallas Cowboys is the top free agent. However, Dallas is expected to apply the franchise tag on Pickens. Therefore, Indianapolis Colts wideout Alec Pierce is expected to draw the most attention. If the Colts can’t keep Pierce from free agency, he will have a robust market. Will Washington GM Adam Peters want to get into a bidding war for Pierce?

Pickens and Pierce are drawing the most attention, but the most accomplished free-agent receiver is Mike Evans. Evans will be entering his 13th NFL season in 2026, and he’s spent his entire career with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. When Evans is done playing, there’s a good chance he ends up in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Before last season, Evans went over 1,000 yards receiving in his first 11 seasons, tying Jerry Rice. Injuries limited Evans to eight games in 2025.

The Bucs want to keep Evans, but they’re not going to break the bank for the soon-to-be 33-year-old. That means there’s a real chance he’ll hit free agency.

Last week, Sports Illustrated made bold predictions for every team and sent Evans to Washington. On paper, it makes a ton of sense. Evans would be the exact type of receiver Jayden Daniels needs opposite McLaurin. He’s dependable, is the ultimate red-zone target and catches everything in his vicinity. Whether it’s Jameis Winston, Tom Brady, or Baker Mayfield, Evans is a quarterback’s best friend.

While it sounds good in theory, here’s why it doesn’t make sense. First, remember how GM Adam Peters said the Commanders needed to get “younger and faster” in 2026? While he remains an excellent receiver, Evans doesn’t help Washington get younger or faster.

Most importantly, Evans will be 33 when the season begins. Do we remember what happened last offseason? The Commanders allowed the contract stalemate with McLaurin to drag late into the preseason before agreeing to terms on an extension. A big sticking point in those negotiations was McLaurin’s age. McLaurin hadn’t even turned 30 yet while the two sides negotiated. He turned 30 in September.

So, why would Peters sign a player who is two years older than McLaurin?

There is often an exception to every rule. The Commanders will explore every option to improve their team. If Evans hits free agency, Washington will undoubtedly discuss adding him. However, given what we know, it just doesn’t make sense. It doesn’t help that Evans suffered three separate injuries last season: hamstring, concussion and broken clavicle.

The Commanders will add help at wide receiver, just don’t expect it to be Evans, even though he could still help them.

NFL Tush Push ban gets major update: What it means for Steelers

Arguably one of the most controversial plays in National Football League history, the Tush Push made popular by the Philadelphia Eagles has received an important update. And it’s great news for the Pittsburgh Steelers and their Spartan variant of the play.

According to a report from ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Rich McKay of the NFL Competition Committee announced that “no team has offered a proposal to ban the Tush Push,” and there weren’t any talks about changing the rule.

No team has offered a proposal to ban the Tush Push and there has been no recent discussion about changing the rule, Rich McKay told reporters today. https://t.co/TQsSzitie6

— Adam Schefter (@AdamSchefter) February 22, 2026

Pittsburgh debuted their own version with great success in 2025, naming it the Spartan after Connor Heyward, who lines up under center for the play and his ties to Michigan State.

Additionally, the Steelers have used a trick play variation where running back Kenneth Gainwell is handed the ball, which is named Yazoo after his hometown in Mississippi.

The Green Bay Packers first submitted a proposal to ban the controversial Tush Push in February 2025, when the play then became a hotly debated topic at the Annual League Meeting in March. It appears, though, that after two failed attempts to ban the play, the Tush Push — and Pittsburgh’s Spartan variant — is here to stay.
