There's a new Hugo Ekitike and he's made for Liverpool

There’s a new Hugo Ekitike and he’s made for Liverpool

He’s a quintessential Liverpool attacker. Exactly, the type of player the Reds like to have playing as the no.9. Roberto Firmino and Daniel Sturridge have been very similar profiles.

What’s also interesting is that while Hughes has focused on signing a lot of young players for the defence, he hasn’t really brought in any young attackers apart from Wright.

Liverpool definitely have more options at youth level in attack, but that should not deter the club’s sporting director to pursue even more additions of similar profile to Ndukwe and Ndiaye.

One of those should be targeting a player who could be the next Ekitike who is simply made for Liverpool due to his style of play and profile.

The player in question is Julian Hall of New York Red Bulls. The 17-year-old scored a brace on his first start of the MLS season helping New York to a 2-1 victory.

Despite being so young, this was Hall’s 45th appearance for Red Bull’s first-team. He has eight goal contributions so far. Admittedly a lot of these appearances have come off the bench, with Hall starting just nine games.

That makes his output pretty decent considering he has eight goal contributions in nine starts.

There’s more to Hall than just output though. His link-up play and his first touch is very similar to Ekitike. He has that aura of unpredictability, capable of making clever flicks to surprise his opponents and retain the ball for his team.

At the same time, he also knows how to get into dangerous areas inside the opposition’s penalty area. Like Ekitike, he has a great sense of awareness for the goal.

He doesn’t turn 18-years-old until next month, and when he does Liverpool will be able to sign him in the summer window.

‘We were looking at matchups’: India assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate breaks silence after Axar Patel snub sparks controversy

NEW DELHI: India’s decision to leave out vice-captain Axar Patel triggered a major selection controversy after a crushing 76-run defeat to South Africa exposed the gamble in their Super 8 clash of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup. Assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate admitted the management had spent days debating the combination before opting for Washington Sundar instead — a call that backfired badly as India collapsed to 111 in pursuit of 188.

The loss marked India’s biggest defeat in T20 World Cup history and ended their remarkable 18-match unbeaten run across ICC white-ball events. But the spotlight quickly shifted from the result to the explosive team selection, with Axar’s omission raising serious questions.

Breaking his silence, ten Doeschate revealed just how agonising the decision had been.

“Yeah, we spent so much time deliberating about the XI, the last couple of days,” he said. “And I guess the only way that it sort of didn’t play into our hands is if we did have the ideal start like we did today with getting Quinton and Rickelton out so early.”

He explained that the call was driven purely by tactical considerations, not a reflection of Axar’s value.

“We were kind of looking at matchups more in the middle. And then obviously, someone has to give way. So, do we leave a batter out and get another bowler in? In hindsight, that looks like the right decision. But playing it forward and making decisions at the time, we felt we needed Rinku as an eighth batsman, so to speak. And the decision was based around there.”

128696968

India ultimately chose Sundar for his powerplay bowling ability and batting flexibility, even though Axar is widely regarded as one of the side’s most dependable all-rounders.

“Certainly, it’s not to take anything away from Axar and his leadership and how important he is to the team,” ten Doeschate stressed. “We face it almost every week, trying to squeeze 11 places into 15. We’re finding it tricky, and we need to make sure we get that spot on for the next two games.”

He also dismissed concerns over Sundar’s limited IPL opportunities.

“I don’t think that’s necessarily relevant. We know what Washi’s done while he’s been with India, and we judge him on that,” he said. “A big part of the strategy today was how well he bowled in the power play. Winning that power play was going to be super important.”

The assistant coach admitted the plan was built around countering South Africa’s left-hand heavy middle order.

“Given the fact that we thought the majority of the threat was going to come from the left-handers, and we wanted to play the extra batter, it left us with one choice between Washington and Axar, and today we chose to go with Washi.”

He acknowledged the optics looked worse because Sundar didn’t bowl in the powerplay as intended.

“He obviously didn’t bowl in the power play tonight, so it looks like we’ve purely gone on who’s going to bowl through the middle, in which case you would choose Axar. But the strategy was around that.”

Despite the backlash, ten Doeschate expressed hope Axar would understand the decision.

“In a tournament like this, you expect all players to understand that the best intentions are trying to pick the best 11 to win the game, and I hope Axar takes it in the same spirit.”

Why we hosted Sundowns at Solomon Mahlangu – TS Galaxy coach

Why we hosted Sundowns at Solomon Mahlangu – TS Galaxy coach

Interview

Beganovic on entertaining Downs in alternative pitch

Photo: DISKI FANS

TS Galaxy head coach Adnan Beganovic has explained why the club opted to host Mamelodi Sundowns at the Solomon Mahlangu Stadium in their Nedbank Cup clash over the weekend.

The Rockets eliminated Masandawana in the Round of 16 after securing a 2-0 victory, thanks to first half goals from debutant Sphamandla Ngwenya and Junior Zindoga.

With the Downs mentor Miguel Cardoso voicing his displeasure with the pitch after the match, the Bosnian explained that although it was not his decision to take the game to KwaMhlanga, it’s imperative for the club to give back to the area.

“It’s not my choice to bring Sundowns here, besides for the first game against Marumo Gallants we played here and I think TS Galaxy started from this stadium, playing in the second league,” Beganovic said.

“I think we also need to give something back to this area, to these beautiful fans and bring some biggest games here, bring Nedbank Cup [games] here if we can. If we are lucky to play here again why not?

Beganovic expressed delight at knocking out the Tshwane giants, and dismissed suggestions that his team’s victory was a fluke, stating that luck is earned.

“I’m so happy. We spoke about luck but you need to deserve luck, you need to show something, it’s not easy to score two goals and the last game I think we dominated all the 120 minutes. You need to have quality to win the games.

“Luck, yes, you need to deserve it – Sundowns missed some opportunities but also we are always there to defend, to block every shot. And then, it’s not only about the pitch, it’s not only about the stadium.

“I think we deserved to bring something, to give something back to these beautiful fans who support us a lot and I hope we can play one more game here to give again a beautiful opportunity [to the fans] in the stadium full of supporters and also we promise a good game.

Galaxy, who clinched the Nedbank Cup at the expense of Kaizer Chiefs as a second-tier side in 2019, await their fate in the quarter-final, with the draw set to be conducted this evening.

Real Madrid and Barcelona set sights on Manchester City’s Rodri

Real Madrid and Barcelona set sights on Manchester City’s Rodri

Real Madrid and Barcelona are reportedly interested in signing Manchester City star Rodri.

According to German outlet Bild, the two La Liga giants have the 29-year-old at the top of their wish list and could launch a bid in the summer.

Rodri has been a key player for the Citizens since joining the club in 2019 from Atletico Madrid.

But the midfielder’s contract will expire in June 2027, sparking speculation regarding his future in Manchester.

City manager Pep Guardiola is desperate for Rodri to extend his stay at the club.

He said in a recent press conference: “I would love desperately [for Rodri to stay]. Rodri is Rodri. As much age as he has, more wiser, more understanding of the game.

“There are players that are defined on the big stages, in the difficulties, and Rodri’s one of them, like Bernie [Bernardo Silva], like Ruben [Dias], like many of them that I had in the past. You cannot achieve what we achieved if you don’t have huge personalities.”

Rodri has been a consistent performer for City over the years.

He has made 287 appearances across all competitions, with 27 goals and 32 assists to his name.

But injuries have reduced his playing time for City in recent seasons.

Rodri made only a single Premier League start last term due to a cruciate ligament injury.

He has also missed a chunk of this season with a hamstring issue, starting only 11 top-flight matches so far.

Rodri is widely regarded as one of the best holding midfielders in the world.

He is highly rated for his passing skills, composure and playmaking ability.

He is physically strong, which helps him win tackles and aerial duels.

City have struggled in Rodri’s absence, as they went trophyless last season.

Given his importance in the team, the Premier League giants will likely renew his contract soon.
