Dodgers Bring Back Evan Phillips on $6.5 Million Deal

The Los Angeles Dodgers have completed the signing of reliever Evan Phillips, bringing him back after multiple reports of interest in retaining his services.

Phillips is signing a one-year deal worth $6.5 million, giving the Dodgers another quality relief arm following a season that was full of letdowns.

BREAKING: The Dodgers have re-signed Evan Phillips for $6.5 million for the 2026 season ?

In a corresponding move, the Dodgers had to designate catcher Ben Rortvedt for assignment, clearing up a roster spot for the pitcher.

Phillips has been battling for a while, dating back to last year when he underwent surgery for a torn rotator cuff and forearm inflammation in June of 2025.

The injury led to Phillips standing on the sidelines for most of the past season after undergoing Tommy John surgery, a brutal procedure with one of the longest recoveries for a pitcher.

He pitched only 5.2 innings in seven appearances in 2025 at age 30, but before then, he threw 63 innings in 2022, 61.1 innings in 2023, and 54.2 innings in 2024, plus 15 innings of playoff baseball.

Why did the Dodgers bring back Evan Phillips?

The Dodgers found a gem in Phillips, who has become one of the more rock-solid closers in the sport since joining the organization.

Early in his baseball career, he struggled to put up a season with value in bWAR, with his best seasons coming as a Dodger in 2022 and 2023.

He has a 2.22 ERA with the Dodgers over the past five years, putting up 4.1 bWAR, a high total for a reliever.

Most notably, Phillips was money for the Dodgers in the 2024 postseason, pitching 6.2 innings and allowing no earned runs, helping them capture their first of two consecutive titles.

While the risk for another serious injury is high and he won’t be available until halfway through the season, the Dodgers are betting on their uncovered, undervalued player to deliver as they saw before anyone else in the league.

Los Angeles is an organization known for bringing back players who delivered for them in the past, barring a dramatic spike in cost or multiple concerning seasons, and Phillips will get 2026 to make sure his downturn is not a permanent one in terms of health.

Dodgers DFA Ben Rortvedt in Shocking Roster Move

The Los Angeles Dodgers designated catcher Ben Rortvedt for assignment just five days after claiming him off waivers from the Cincinnati Reds.

The Dodgers re-signed relief pitcher Evan Phillips to a one-year, $6.5 million deal Wednesday, and placed Rortvedt on waivers to clear a spot on the roster. The Dodgers designated left-hander Anthony Banda for assignment to make room for the catcher on the roster Friday, and the reliever is still on waivers.

What Will the Dodgers Do Without Ben Rortvedt?

Rortvedt came to the Dodgers in 2025 at the trade deadline, and came up to the big leagues in September when catchers Will Smith and Dalton Rushing landed on the injured list.

He made 18 appearances and received heavy praise from manager Dave Roberts during the regular season, and found his way onto the postseason roster.

While Rortvedt made a big impact with the Dodgers, they should be fine the 28-year-old on the squad. Smith and Rushing are both healthy, and the L.A. has made a point to keep fewer than three catchers on their 40-man roster all offseason.

Will Evan Phillips Pitch in 2026?

Phillips, 31, played for L.A. from 2021-25, but spent most of his last season with the Dodgers on the injured list after undergoing Tommy John Surgery.

The veteran reliever underwent his surgery June 2025, meaning he won’t be available for the beginning of the season. He could return before the end of 2026, though, and gives the Dodgers another solid option coming out of the bullpen.

During his five-season tenure with the Dodgers so far, Phillips has made 201 appearances and has a 2.22 ERA. He has served as a high-leverage guy for the Dodgers during his time with the reigning World Series champions, which will be useful considering their shortcomings in the bullpen last season.

President of baseball operations Andrew Friedman commented on bringing Phillips back earlier in the offseason.

“We had a number of back and forth discussions with Evan and his agent,” Friedman said. “ It is challenging with him coming off surgery so he is going to take some time and look to sign after he throws off the mound when his rehab allows. Evan has been a big part of our past success and we will continue the conversation about bringing him back. We respect that he is taking this time to decide what is best for him and his family.”

After signing another top-class reliever, the Dodgers are clearly gearing up for another postseason run as they chase their third consecutive World Series title.

French woman convicted of stealing teammate's credit card takes gold in individual biathlon

French woman convicted of stealing teammate’s credit card takes gold in individual biathlon originally appeared on The Sporting News.

The 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan gives athletes a chance to achieve their ultimate goal of winning a medal for their home countries. There are numerous training and obstacles to overcome both before and during their quests for Olympic glory.

For French biathlete Julia Simon, that includes overcoming theft and credit card charges just last year. On Wednesday, Simon won the gold medal in the women’s 15k biathlon, finishing with a time of 41:15.6, in front of her fellow teammate, Lou Jeanmonnot and Lora Hristova of Bulgaria.

But just four months ago, Simon, who has won three gold medals over two Olympic games, was found guilty of theft and credit card fraud charges for using her teammate’s bank card. As wild as the story sounds, it is as real as it gets.

MORE 2026 OLYMPICS: Live medal tracker | Viewer’s guide | Day-by-day schedule

Who is Julia Simon?

Julia Simon is a biathlete from Albertville, France, who is 29 years old. She has been competing for the French national team since 2018, and has won 16 medals in World Cup and Olympic events, an impressive 12 of them being gold.

While her athletic achievements are impressive by itself, Simon gained notoriety for her involvement in using one of her teammate’s, Justine Braisaz-Bouchet, and a staff member’s bank cards to make purchases of over 2,000 Euro (about $2373.23 in U.S. Dollars.) back in 2022. While it is unclear what was purchased, one user on Reddit stated a German newspaper reported the purchases were for Go Pros while the team was in a festival in Norway.

Julia Simon conviction

In October 2025, Simon was convicted of the charges, and sentenced to a three-month suspended prison sentence. According toLe Monde, Simon admitted to making the charges and apologized to the victims:

“I can’t explain it. I don’t remember doing it. I can’t make sense of it,” Simon said during the hearing, as quoted by the local newspaper Le Dauphiné Libéré. Simon was also fined €15,000 ($17,450) after she admitted the thefts during the hearing and offered apologies to the victims, local media reported.

The French ski federation said, in a statement, that it took note of the court’s ruling and that its disciplinary commission would meet as soon as possible “to determine any disciplinary action at the federation level.” Following the ruling, the French federation could find itself under pressure to leave Simon off the Olympic team. It said it will continue, “as it has since the case first came to light, to take all necessary measures to protect the interests of the athletes, the coaching staff, and the team environment.”

According to the Sweden Herald, Simon initially denied the allegations.

“There were no economic motives for my actions,” Simon said via Dauphiné Libéré. Today I’m just taking it one day at a time, because standing before you will have consequences for my career. It was ridiculous and stupid, because I didn’t need it.”

Simon received a six-month ban from the sport, including five months suspended. As a result, Simon could not participate in the Nov. 2025 World Cup events. But thanks to the biathlon disciplinary unit BIU not imposing an additional penalty on Julia Simon, she was eligible for the Olympics in Milan.

“Now, I’d like to be left alone, honestly, because I read some things last night that weren’t pleasant,” Simon told Eurosport via The Times after winning gold. “I proved I belong here today, and I had even proven myself before. I don’t have anything left to prove to anyone, and now I’d like to be left alone to do my biathlon.

“The past is behind us within the team. We’ve talked things through. Now, we’re here to win medals, to do biathlon. Today, we showed that again. So please, stop, whether it’s the media or the public. It would be really appreciated by everyone.”

Simon did participate alongside her teammate whose credit card she used, Braisaz-Bouchet. She finished 80th on Wednesday.

What is the biathlon?

The biathlon is one of the most challenging and arduous events in the Winter Games, as it combines rifle shooting with cross-country skiing. During each lap on the biathlon track, athletes undergo shooting tests, one standing and one in the prone position with five shots, although the number of attempts can change based on the specialty.

The targets have variable diameters of anywhere from 45 mm for shooting in the prone position, 115 mm for standing, and a missed target results in a penalty. Penalties can include an extra loop around the track or a minute added to an athlete’s time.

Caitlin Clark, Angel Reese to make Team USA debuts in FIBA tournament

Rising talents in women’s college basketball like Caitlin Clark, Angel Reese and Paige Bueckers will officially make their debuts for the senior national team in games next month.

The trio of young WNBA stars were named to Team USA’s roster for a qualifying tournament for the 2026 FIBA Women’s World Cup in San Juan, Puerto Rico, from March 11-17.

Olympic gold medal winners Kahleah Copper, Chelsea Gray, Kelsey Plum and Jackie Young are on the roster. Veterans Dearica Hamby, Rhyne Howard and Aliyah Boston will also represent for the Americans.

In addition to Clark, Reese and Bueckers, other players making their senior national team debut include Sonia Citron and Kiki Iriafen.

Notably absent from the roster — which was selected by managing director Sue Bird — are Napheesa Collier, two-time MVP Breanna Stewart and reigning WNBA MVP A’ja Wilson. But it’s worth noting that the Americans are already qualified for the World Cup, which they accomplished when a Kara Lawson-coached group of college players won the AmeriCup last summer. So, the stakes for this qualifying tournament aren’t all that high.

Collier is recovering from surgery on her ankles, and Team USA says Stewart will join the squad for its pre-tournament training camp in Miami, Florida on March 7-8.

Team USA says head coach Kara Lawson will lead the team for part of the tournament because it collides with the start of the NCAA Tournament.

“Lawson will return to Duke to prepare for the NCAA Tournament prior to the tournament ending, and an assistant coach will sit in the first chair for the remaining games,” USA Basketball said in a press release.

Lawson’s Duke Blue Devils — now winners of 15 straight games and in first place in the ACC — will be in the thick of March Madness preparation. The ACC Tournament will end on March 8, Selection Sunday is March 15, and NCAA Tournament games will begin on March 20. Another Duke staffer, associate head coach Tia Jackson, will serve as a scout coach in San Juan.

On the court, Lawson will be assisted by a trio of WNBA head coaches in the Indiana Fever’s Stephanie White, Golden State Valkyries‘ Natalie Nakase of Phoenix Mercury’s and Nate Tibbetts. Jose Fernandez, formerly the longtime coach at USF who is now the head coach of the Dallas Wings, will also serve as a scout coach.

The first of Team USA’s five games in Puerto Rico is March 11 vs. Senegal.

The FIBA Women’s World Cup begins on Sept. 4 in Berlin, Germany.

Hall of Fame Saints QB Drew Brees to ride in Krewe of Bacchus parade

This will be fun. WDSU executive producer Farrah Yvette reports that legendary New Orleans Saints quarterback will be riding in the Krewe of Bacchus parade this weekend. One of the Carnival season’s most iconic parades will roll on Sunday, Feb. 15 as one of the biggest celebrations before Mardi Gras on Fat Tuesday. Brees famously reigned as king of Bacchus after the Saints won Super Bowl XLIV, and while this year’s royalty has already been chosen (the actor Patrick Warburton, best known for his roles in Family Guy, Seinfeld, The Emperor’s New Groove and The Venture Bros., among a hundred others), he’ll have a parade float all to himself.

Yvette shared a rendering of the float Brees will ride on, which includes a large statue of the quarterback throwing a football and an LED screen that will share messages with the crowd. Brees was announced as a headlining member for the Pro Football Hall of Fame Class of 2026, so this is a great opportunity for him to return to the city where his career really took off and enjoy one of the cultural events that make New Orleans so unique.

Here is a rendering of the float @drewbrees will ride on Sunday for the Bacchus parade. It celebrates his iconic career. This is amazing. I can’t wait to see it! #Saintspic.twitter.com/BbNDBukJ0i

The 2026 Krewe of Bacchus parade route begins at the intersection of Napoleon Avenue and Tchoupitoulas Street in Uptown, and it’s set to roll at 5:15 p.m. CT. Bacchus always draws a big crowd, so if you want to be in that number, make plans to get a spot early.

WNBA player reportedly 'willing to testify' against Falcons' James Pearce Jr. in domestic violence case

If the domestic violence charges against Atlanta Falcons edge rusher James Pearce Jr. go to trial, his ex-girlfriend, Los Angeles Sparks forward Rickea Jackson, will be “willing to testify” against him, according to ESPN, which cited documentation from a court notice Jackson’s attorneys filed in in Florida’s Miami-Dade County on Tuesday.

The 22-year-old Pearce, last year’s No. 26 overall pick who finished third in AP NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year voting this past Thursday, was arrested two days later and now faces five felony charges — two counts of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon as well as aggravated stalking, fleeing or eluding police with lights or siren and aggravated battery involving a law enforcement officer — plus a misdemeanor count of resisting an officer without violence to his person.

On Sunday, a day after Pearce was booked at Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center, he reportedly was released from jail once he posted $20,500 bond. He was given a stay-away order, a pretrial measure imposed so that he doesn’t interact with Jackson, 24, per ESPN’s Wednesday report.

Jackson, who overlapped with Pearce at Tennessee from 2022-24 and went No. 4 overall in the 2024 WNBA Draft, reportedly told police that she and Pearce dated for around three years before their recent breakup.

Jackson is currently in Miami playing in Unrivaled, a 3-on-3 league that runs during the W’s offseason and features many of its top players.

When talking to the police, she explained the details of the events leading up to Pearce’s arrest, per ESPN, which cited an affidavit in its report. Jackson reportedly said that Pearce followed her in his vehicle on Saturday morning and even tried to open her car door at a stop. Then, when she attempted to enter the Doral Police Department, Pearce repeatedly rammed her car with his, the affidavit read, per ESPN.

Jackson called the police, but, when they responded to the scene, Pearce reportedly resisted arrest. After being ordered to get on the ground, Pearce got back in his car and ultimately drove away in his SUV, hitting an officer in the knee in the process, according to the affidavit ESPN cited.

A chase commenced, with Pearce reportedly crashing at an intersection and then fleeing on foot. When officers reached Pearce, he tensed his arms, “not allowing officers to apprehend him,” ESPN reported.

Despite the struggle he allegedly put forth, Pearce was arrested.

Pearce, according to a statement from his legal team of Jacob Nunez, Yale Sanford and Joshua Cohen, “maintains his innocence and urges the public to understand that while allegations have the power to shape a narrative, that it is hardly the full, complete story.”

The NFL has been in contact with the Falcons, and the matter will be reviewed under the league’s personal conduct policy, ESPN reported.

Jackson, meanwhile, is being represented by Gary F. Celetti and Wendy A.L. Beswick, according to ESPN.

“The victim is pleading with the Court and the State to conclude this matter promptly without hindering the efficacy of the prosecution’s case,” the attorneys reportedly wrote.

India vs Namibia – ICC T20 World Cup: Match time, teams, how to stream

Who: India vs Namibia
What: ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 – Group A
When: Thursday, February 12 at 7pm (13:30 GMT)
Where: Arun Jaitley Stadium, New Delhi, India
How to follow and stream: Al Jazeera’s live text and photo stream begins at 10:30 GMT

Namibia will look to make the most of an illness-and-injury-plagued Indian side when they meet the defending champions in their Group A match on Thursday.

India are likely to take the field without their swashbuckling opener Abhishek Sharma after he was hospitalised with an upset stomach on Tuesday.

While Sharma was discharged on the eve of the match, his presence in the playing XI is doubtful.

The world’s top-ranked T20I batter struggled in India’s opening match against the United States.

“He has been discharged today, and he is doing well,” Indian batter Tilak Varma told reporters.

“We have got one more day for the game. Hopefully, we decide by tomorrow on how he feels, and we go with it.”

In better news for the world champions, pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah is expected to return after he missed the opener due to a fever.

(Al Jazeera)

Namibia expect ‘great spectacle’

Namibia, meanwhile, will be looking to move past their heavy loss against the Netherlands on Tuesday and register a shock win over the two-time world champions.

The African team’s coach, Craig Williams, admitted his side faces a stiff challenge against India, but they would like to pose a challenge against the pre-tournament favourites.

“Playing India in India – it’s going to be a great game for us and the spectacle is going to be fantastic for everyone back home as well,” Williams said before the match.

“As a professional team, we want to put on a good show, and hopefully, we’re going to stick to our game plan, and then we’ll see what happens at the end of the day.”

Williams said the key to Namibia’s chances will be a strong batting performance at the top of the order.

“We need someone in our top four to bat for a prolonged period of time, and then you need partnerships,” the former cricketer said.

“Playing against India won’t be easier, but if we can stick to our game plan, and take one ball at a time, hopefully, the result will then go our way.”

Form guide: Namibia

One of the biggest results in Namibian cricket history came in October, when they beat 2024 finalists South Africa by four wickets.

They have not been lucky enough to play international fixtures regularly, but can pose a challenge if one of their key players makes an impact.

Last five matches (most recent first): L W L W W

Team news: India

India’s squad has been hit by a range of illnesses and injuries, but Suryakumar Yadav’s team have plenty of power on the bench to grab another win.

Bumrah could return to the XI, replacing his stand-in Mohammed Siraj, and Sanju Samson could take Sharma’s place at the top of the order.

WWE Smackdown Viewership & Ratings Report: 2/6/2026

Drew McIntyre on “WWE SmackDown” – WWE

“WWE SmackDown’s” ratings have taken a dip since the beginning of the new year, with the show falling below the one million viewer threshold for three consecutive episodes in January. For the go-home show before the Royal Rumble, “SmackDown” drew 1.2 million viewers, which was the program’s highest total of 2026, but because of how the show has performed it recent weeks, it was uncertain if the blue brand would manage to capitalize on its momentum following the event. However, with the road to WrestleMania officially underway, “SmackDown” not only increased its viewership last Friday, but recorded its highest number in five months.

According to Wrestlenomics and SpoilerTV, “SmackDown” averaged 1,459,000 viewers, which is the biggest audience the show has pulled in since the September 5 edition of the program. “SmackDown” also posted an 0.35 in the key 18-49 demographic, which is the first time the show has drawn above the 0.30 mark all year. When comparing both categories to the week prior, total viewership was up by 16%, while the 18-49 demo increased by 21%. Additionally, “SmackDown” was able to improve its viewership despite going head-to-head with seven NBA games, and the Opening Ceremonies for the 2026 Winter Olympics, which aired on the east coast at 8:00 PM.

Although “SmackDown” impressed on Friday night, the show’s total viewership has decreased by 9% since this time last year. However, more concerning is the program’s decline in the 18-49 demo, which is down by 27% since February 2025. For the next two weeks, “SmackDown” will air on Syfy instead of the USA Network due to Olympic coverage, so it’s likely that viewership will drop due to the show being on a different channel. Otherwise, it remains to be seen if “SmackDown” will continue to build its audience with WrestleMania on the horizon, or if last Friday was simply a one-off.

Formula 1 testing got under way in Bahrain on Wednesday, and it was the first time fans could see all the teams on track this year.

Teams and drivers did go out at the Barcelona ‘shakedown’ last month, but it was behind closed doors and Williams missed it because their car was not ready.

Red Bull are 'the benchmark', says Wolff

Verstappen was second fastest on the first day of Bahrain testing [Getty Images]

Red Bull are “the benchmark” in Formula 1 as pre-season testing begins in earnest in Bahrain, says Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff.

World champion Lando Norris ended the first day of the first of two tests in Bahrain fastest by 0.129 seconds from Red Bull’s Max Verstappen.

But Wolff said that he had seen on Mercedes’ data that Red Bull’s new engine was more effective than those of rivals.

“They are able to deploy far more energy on the straights than everybody else,” Wolff said. “You are speaking a second, over consecutive laps.

“On a single lap we have seen it before, but now we have seen it on 10 consecutive laps with the same kind of straight-line deployment.

“I would say that as per today, on the first official day of testing, which is always with the caveat of that, they have set the benchmark.”

New engine designs are part of the biggest rules overhaul in F1 history this season, with power-units, chassis, tyres and fuel all new.

The 1.6-litre V6 turbo hybrid engines have a near 50-50 split between the internal combustion engine and electrical components in terms of total power output.

Energy recovery and deployment are central to performance with engines that are served of electrical energy, and the battery is depleted and recharged on virtually every straight.

There are four ways of recovering energy: under braking; revving the engine in corners; lifting off early before a corner and harvesting while still on full throttle.

With so much resting on the hybrid engines, any gain in deployment could be critical in terms of competitiveness.

Headline lap times in testing are notoriously unreliable as indicators of form as the specification in which the cars are running is not made public.

Norris set his best time on the C2 compound tyres, Verstappen on the softer C3.

Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc was third fastest, 0.521secs slower than Norris, ahead of Haas driver Esteban Ocon.

Verstappen drove all day for Red Bull, but most other teams split the running between their two drivers.

The exception were Aston Martin, for whom only Lance Stroll drove the new Adrian Newey-designed car at the start of the team’s engine partnership with Honda.

Stroll was more than five seconds off the pace. Fernando Alonso takes over the car on Thursday.

New F1 rules ‘ridiculously complex’ – HamiltonF1 2026 cars in pictures at Bahrain testing

Engine trick ‘worth a few horsepower’

Wolff’s remarks come in the context of an ongoing row over the legality of the Mercedes engine.

Rivals believe Mercedes have found a loophole that allows them to run the engine above the permitted compression ratio.

This – a measurement of the cylinder displacement between the two extremes of the piston stroke – is limited to 16:1, and the rules dictate it will be measured at ambient temperature with the engine at rest.

Mercedes’ rivals believe they have found a way to use materials technology and thermal expansion to run the engine to a higher ratio and are pushing for a rule clarification before the start of the season next month.

Mercedes have not denied they are doing this, but insist the engine is legal.

Rivals have claimed the trick is worth as much as 0.3secs per lap, while Wolff said the gain was “a few horsepower – in England you would say a couple, which is more like two and three.”

He added: “Lobbying from the other engine manufacturers has massively ramped up over the last few months.

“I mean, secret meetings, secret letters to the FIA, which obviously there is no such thing as secret in this sport.

“Everybody was a little bit too excited about the performance of the Mercedes engine-powered teams.

“And I think that our colleagues from the other brands have been carried away a little bit that this could be embarrassing, which I don’t think it is at all.”

On the prospect of the rules changing before the start of the season, he said: “There is a governance process. And if that governance were to vote for an engine regulation change, you just have to take it on the chin.”

But he said: “The very essence of Formula 1 is to find performance, to attract the best engineers and the best people, give them freedom to develop regulations and once it goes for you and another time it goes against you.”

Williams team principal James Vowles, who is a Mercedes customer, said: “The PU that we have in the car is completely compliant with the regulations. This is a meritocracy where the best engineering outcome effectively gets rewarded as a result, not punished as a result.

“Right now, I don’t think there is a person in the pit lane that can tell you what is the best PU. We are focused on one detail.

“My hope is that sense prevails and we as a sport recognise that we are here to be a meritocracy. The best engineering solution wins as a result of it and therefore we are where we are right now.”
