Big Ten men's basketball report for February 10 – two OT thrillers
The Big Ten delivered two highly entertaining battles on Tuesday night. Two upsets gave the Big Ten quite a shakeup. Illinois lost all of its momentum with two straight overtime losses. Nebraska lost another top-ranked matchup, putting its reputation even more into question.
Here are the scores and the rest of my analysis from Tuesday in Big Ten basketball:
No. 13 Purdue 80-77 vs No. 7 Nebraska
Purdue gets a big-time victory in overtime to secure a top-ten road win. The Boilermakers were up 22 points in the second half and started the game off hot. Turnovers, missing free throws, and poor defense late almost led to a Purdue collapse. Purdue is still able to pull it off, but by the skin of their teeth. Nebraska missed a lot of shots in this game, and Purdue’s defense really was a factor in that, as they made things difficult, and they got 8 steals in this game. This is a huge win for the Boilermakers, but it is a win that still shows great concerns for how this team finishes games. Purdue’s start to this game was why they won, but they need to be better down the stretch to put games away early. Nebraska now comes up short vs another top contender, creating further doubt whether or not they are a true contender in the Big Ten.
Wisconsin 92-90 vs No. 8 Illinois
The Badgers pull off a statement win vs Illinois in overtime. Illinois led by double digits in the second half, but the Badgers willed themselves back from 12 points down. Nick Boyd and John Blackwell were both stars in this game, and Austin Rapp also provided 18 points off the bench, and he hit a crucial 3-pointer late in the game. The Badgers can play with anybody; they have the talent, and they continue to show they are one of the most dangerous teams in the Big Ten. As soon as this game went into overtime, the Badgers went on an 11-3 run. This is not a team you want to let continue to hang around. Keaton Wagler was fantastic in this game, but the Badgers had the scorers to combat his elite night. Wisconsin now has two of the best wins out of anybody in the conference, with victories over Michigan and now Illinois. The Badgers have also won 8 of their last 10 games. This team is getting hot at the right time. Illinois has now lost two straight games in overtime. Things in the Big Ten are continuing to get interesting.
Top Performers
Keaton Wagler was the best player on Tuesday night. Wagler dropped 34 points on 12-23 shooting and 5-10 shooting from beyond the arc. Wagler also chipped in 7 assists in his explosive scoring outing. Wagler is making quite a name for himself this season and could end up being a lottery pick in the upcoming NBA draft. Wagler is averaging 18.5 points per game and is shooting 43% from 3, being the biggest MVP for Illinois this season.
Nick Boyd has been an elite scorer all season long. Boyd is averaging 20.2 points per game this season. He had himself 25 points vs Illinois in the overtime win. He was a stellar 3-5 from 3, had 5 assists, and 2 steals. Boyd sets the tone for this team, and in their victories, more than likely Boyd is leading the show with at least 20 points. Just like Wagler, he has also been the MVP for his team.
Overview
In two games, the Big Ten delivered two huge upsets in overtime. The Big Ten has been exciting all season long for men’s hoops, and it looks like this season will end just the same. The Badgers continue to put the conference and the country on notice, while Purdue gave the conference a reminder that they are still a top team in the conference. Both Illinois and Nebraska need a win more than ever to get things back on the right track after this past stretch of games.
What’s Next
The slate for today should deliver 1-2 great games, while two of them could end up getting ugly. The Trojans will face off against the Buckeyes, and this game is critical for both teams as they each need to keep the momentum rolling. Iowa has a matchup versus Maryland, which could end up as a battle, but is more likely to end up as a battle. Michigan vs Northwestern should be another lopsided win for the Wolverines. Penn State vs Washington is the last game in the slate, and it will be the first of a nice upcoming stretch for the Huskies to get over their 500 record. The Huskies could move up in the standings if they take care of business.

NEED TO KNOW
Two-time Super Bowl champ Cooper Kupp shared a glimpse at how he was convinced to join the Seattle SeahawksAfter leaving the Los Angeles Rams following eight seasons in 2024, the star wide receiver landed in SeattleThe Washington state native revealed that a DM from now-teammate Jarran Reed played a role in his new chapter
Cooper Kupp is winning the “How It started, how it’s going” trend.
In the wake of clinching Super Bowl LX, the Seattle Seahawks wide receiver and Washington state native opened up his Instagram DMs to share a message about how his return to his home state came to pass.
In a post on Tuesday, Feb. 10, Kupp shared a direct message he received from Seahawks defensive tackle Jarran Reed in March 2025.
“Brooooo we would love you in Seattle my guy we are building something special over here,” Reed, 33, wrote on March 13.
Kupp, 32, juxtaposed the screenshotted DM with a photo of himself hugging Seahawks quarterback Sam Darnold after winning Sunday’s big game over the New England Patriots.

After spending the first eight years of his career with the Los Angeles Rams — and winning the Super Bowl and MVP honors in 2022 — Kupp was released last year when the team couldn’t find a suitable trade.
One day after Reed sent his message, it was announced that Kupp signed a three-year, $45 million deal, according to ESPN. But leaving L.A. was an emotional time for the Yakima, Wash. native.
“There was frustration early on around getting the buy-in from the people of LA,” Kupp wrote in an Instagram post about the team’s return to the city after 20 years in St. Louis. “But we knew at the end of the day, it’s about providing moments. Shared experiences. The things that parents and their children will talk about and remember forever.
He continued, “That is what makes the ending of these last eight years so difficult. It’s the ending of something we have enjoyed building with you.”
He went on to thank the fans for their “shared moments,” and he showed gratitude toward the city “for welcoming my family with open arms and allowing us to grow here.”
The caption concluded, “Next chapter starts now. Best is yet to come.”

Michigan football: Jay Hill explains why he followed Kyle Whittingham
Michigan football has seen its fair share of changes over the course of the offseason. With Kyle Whittingham taking over the program in late December, the Wolverines are set for a different look in many respects, but still with a similar identity to what was built over the course of the previous regimes.
One of the big changes is the inclusion of defensive coordinator Jay Hill, who came aboard from the same post at BYU after being the head coach at Weber State for nearly a decade. He chose to come to Ann Arbor to follow Whittingham, knowing what he’s capable of.
He shared more on the In the Trenches Podcast with Jon Jansen.
“Well, like I say, X’s and O’s wise, I think he’s as good as any coach there is,” Hill said. “And he’s one of those guys that never stops learning. He wants to know what the offense is doing. He’s extremely smart with special teams. He wants to know all the techniques from all the position groups. I’ve seen him grow up in that aspect. I would say just understanding of it’s never perfect. Although we’re striving for perfection, it never is. And so how do you overcome those things? I think he’s really grown there.”
Hill has more experience with Whittingham than most, having played under him and having also gotten his start in coaching under him.
A former cornerback at Utah, Hill cut his teeth working under Whittingham once he was promoted to head coach, succeeding Urban Meyer. From there, he worked his way through the coaching ranks — something he says he owes to Whittingham.
“So I’m one of the few guys in the coaching profession that has the perspective of I actually got to play for Coach Whitt,” Hill said. “He was the defensive coordinator when I was playing. And then I got to be a graduate assistant under him. And then I got to see him as a head coach as he grew into the role. And I have more respect for Coach Whitt than any coach in the game, just because he’s phenomenal with X’s and O’s. He’s extremely disciplined and extremely intelligent. Like when you sit down with him, you’re like, man, this guy is brilliant. And that’s what I always saw in him and why I stayed with him for so long, and why I was willing to come back with him because I just see special in Coach Whitt. He’s a coach of all coaches.”
Thus, when Whittingham came calling, despite Hill being at a different school, three years on the job, it was a no-brainer for him to follow to Ann Arbor, given the opportunity that was laid before him.
“The decision to come to Michigan was not hard at all,” Hill said. “Coach Whitt called me and said, ‘Hey, I think I have this opportunity. What do you think?’ I said, ‘Coach, I’m in because it’s Michigan. And I believe that we can win national championships here. I believe we can win consistent Big Ten championships here.’ With the way Coach Whitt coaches his discipline and toughness, I just think it’s a perfect match for Michigan. I was in. Moving your family and doing some of those things, that’s the hard side of this job. But a lot of times you put yourself in a great situation, and you figure out the other stuff after.”

Why the Jets are the perfect fit for Derek Carr's NFL revival
Derek Carr is eyeing an NFL comeback after spending just one season in retirement.
Carr, who retired last offseason following a labral tear and rotator cuff damage, has recovered well in his season off. He is reportedly back to throwing regularly as a part of his exercise routine, with no shoulder limitations.
And while he has made no public announcement about a return, sources indicate that “the right situation and coaching staff” could bring Carr out of retirement.
The Saints currently still hold his rights, so a return in 2026 would require a trade. And where he ends up, if such a return even does come to fruition, is anyone’s guess. But some teams currently seem like better fits than others.
Derek Carr and the New York Jets: Why it makes sense
When you look at the current landscape of the NFL, the Jets make sense as a landing spot for Derek Carr, for more than a few reasons.
Credible reports that Derek Carr is interested in returning to the NFL and the #Jets just hired one of his favorite coaches Bill Musgrave as the QB coach. Could definitely see the Jets show interest in Carr as the veteran bridge QB this season pic.twitter.com/sEsf54P3qy
— Optimistic Jets (@OptimisticJets) February 10, 2026
The franchise is undergoing a rebuild under Aaron Glenn as he enters his second season as head coach, and the Jets desperately need an answer at quarterback if that rebuild is going to succeed. The starter to open the season, Justin Fields, was benched partway through the 2025 season after nine starts. Pending free agent Tyrod Taylor started four games with one win, and undrafted free agent Brady Cook started four games with no wins.
The Jets also just hired Bill Musgrave as their quarterbacks coach as part of an offensive staff overhaul, who has a close relationship with Carr. Musgrave became one of Carr’s favorite coaches during his time as the Raiders’ offensive coordinator from 2015-2016, when Carr threw for 7,433 yards and 60 touchdowns under his tutelage.

Ukraine's Heraskevych adamant on wearing helmet despite risk of ban

Ukrainian skeleton slider Vladyslav Heraskevych still plans to wear a helmet commemorating compatriot athletes killed in the war with Russia despite possible disqualification by the International Olympic Committee (IOC).
“Yes, that is the plan,” he said after his final training run in Cortina on Wednesday. He has been allowed to wear the helmet in training but official Olympic competition is another matter.
It begins with the first two of a total of four runs on Thursday.
The IOC has referred to its regulations against political messages at the Games, which were set up together with the athletes’ community.
The Olympic body has said that all athletes must be able to compete in a safe environment and not be influenced by various conflicts in the world.
On Wednesday, IOC spokesman Mark Adams said private talks would take place with the slider.
“We will reiterate the many, many opportunities he has to express his grief. He can do it on social media, in press conferences and in the mixed zone,” Adams told a news conference.
“We want him to compete. We really want him to have his moment. That’s very important. And we want all athletes to have a fair and level playing field.”
On whether the Ukrainian would automatically be disqualified for wearing the helmet in competition, Adams added: “I don’t think it is helpful in this situation to look at hypotheticals since we are trying to get him to take part.
“We want him to compete. Without labouring the point, there are rules and regulations the athletes want us to enforce. In the end, it would be an IOC matter.”
Heraskevych’s helmet features images of around half a dozen athletes, including Youth Olympics medallists, who were killed in Russian attacks. The design was intended as a tribute to sports colleagues who have died during the war.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and other political leaders in Europe have backed Heraskevych, who was fourth at last year’s world championships and could win a medal at these Olympics.
But German Olympic Sports Confederation (DOSB) president Thomas Weikert has said that Heraskevych should accept the rules in his “helmet of memory” dispute with the IOC.
“If you fight and play based on rules then you also have to obey the rules. That’s why I would recommend to him not to break the rules,” Weikert said.
“But on the one hand I also understand the athlete who wants to show openly that the aggressor is from Russia and has invaded Ukraine.
“I think that from his point of view as well it’s smarter to do this sensibly, and afterwards he can make political statements. Then he should do so with complete clarity.”
At the 2022 Winter Olympics, Heraskevych held up a placard with the writing “No war in Ukraine” after a run. He was not punished by the IOC. The Russian invasion started a few days after the end of the Games in Beijing.

US skier Lemley takes women's moguls gold after Anthony's late error

US freestyle skier Elizabeth Lemley snatched gold in the women’s moguls on Wednesday after Beijing champion Jakara Anthony of Australia flopped on what was expected to be a winning run.
It is the 20-year-old’s first major title after she scored 82.30 points in the second final to edge out compatriot Jaelin Kauf, who also took silver in China four years ago. Bronze went to France’s Perrine Laffont, the 2018 Olympic champion.
Anthony ended up finishing eighth and last after suddenly losing her balance on the moguls in the last run of the competition.
She led in the first final with a solid run but a back-to-back Olympic gold evaporated to shrieks of surprise from the crowd in Livigno.
Success would have given Australia their first medal of the Milan/Cortina Winter Games. The 27-year-old was Australia’s sole gold at Beijing 2022.

Norway's Oftebro wins Nordic combined gold
Norway’s Jens Luraas Oftebro celebrates his gold medal at the award ceremony after the competition round of the Ski Jumping of the Nordic Combined Men’s Individual Normal Hill/10km event during the Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympic Games. Daniel Karmann/dpa
Norway’s Jens Lurås Oftebro claimed gold in the Nordic combined skiing normal hill/10 kilometres event on Wednesday amid hopes of a good promotion of the endangered Olympic sport.
Having started the cross country pursuit in seventh place after a morning ski jump, Oftebro broke a seven-strong leader group in the final lap.
World Cup leader Johannes Lamparter of Austria managed to close the gap but never came close to passing Oftebro on the home straight.
Oftebro secured the gold one second ahead of Lamparter and Eero Hirvonen was a surprise bronze medallist to give Finland a first medal in the event in 24 years, 2.5 seconds off the pace.
Oftebro added a first individual gold to that from the 2022 team event and silver in the large hill competition.
The 2022 winner Vinzenz Geiger of Germany was 10th in soft conditions on a warm afternoon and Christian Ilves of Estonia, who had led after the jumping, finished sixth.
“It’s an amazing feeling. It was a really tough course and loose conditions, so it’s really a tough race,” Oftebro said.
“I almost crashed in the third loop where there was so much happening, so I felt pretty OK and was happy that I could get a gap in the last climb so I could reach the finish line first.”
Nordic combined has been an Olympic sport since the first Winter Games in 1924.
It is now the only sport without gender equality after the women were not admitted because the sport was not universal enough and lacked in the broadcast and marketing area, according to the International Olympic Committee (IOC).
A decision on 2030 is expected later this year, and there are fears that instead of adding the women the whole sport could be axed from the Games – prompting athletes to lobby for their sport over the past months.
“We have the greatest sport in the world. It is easy like this,” Geiger said after the jumping leg in front of an unusually large crowd, hoping that Olympic leaders have taken notice.

Second Milan/Cortina gold for Simon in French biathlon one-two
Gold medallist France’s Julia Simon poses on the podium of the Women’s Biathlon 15km Individual event at the Anterselva Biathlon Arena during the Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympic Games. Hendrik Schmidt/dpa
Julia Simon got her second biathlon gold medal at the Milan/Cortina Olympics in a French one-two ahead of Lou Jeanmonnot in the 15 kilometres event on Wednesday.
Simon, who started the season a little late after serving a ban following a French court conviction for credit card fraud, got gold again after anchoring the French mixed relay to first place on Sunday.
The reigning world champion could afford one missed target as she won 53.1 seconds ahead of World Cup leader and mixed relay partner Jeanmonnot, who had two missed targets.
Unheralded Bulgarian Lora Hristova, whose best career result in the World Cup is 13th place, was rewarded for clean shooting with a surprise bronze.
Retirement-bound German World Cup champion Franziska Preuss lost her podium chances when she missed two targets in the final shooting and faded to 10th.
In the women’s 15km and men’s 20km there are no penalty laps but a minute added to the skiing time for each missed target.
Simon could afford her missed target as a fast skier en route to the second gold.
She was at the centre of controversy last year and admitted to a French court in October that she had used stolen credit card details belonging to team-mate Justine Braisaz-Bouchet and a team physiotherapist to buy goods online.
She received a suspended three-month prison sentence after which her season was in doubt. But she received a sporting ban of which most was suspended and she started the season in mid-December.
