Yankees projected starting rotation for 2026 season after Ryan Weathers trade

The New York Yankees‘ rotation for the 2026 season isn’t at its full strength at the start of the year. But, even with a few stars, like Gerrit Cole, Carlos Rodon, and Clarke Schmidt potentially sitting out for part of the 2026 season, the rotation is in a good place.

Things got even better when they, according to Craig Mish of Sports Grid, traded four prospects to the Miami Marlins for starter Ryan Weathers.

The new lefty starter joins the rotation, making the Yankees’ projected rotation for 2026 a strong one regardless of the injuries to Cole, Rodon, and Schmidt.

Yankees’ projected starting rotation for 2026 is strong after Weathers’ addition

1. Max Fried, LHP
2. Cam Schlittler, RHP
3. Will Warren, RHP
4. Ryan Weathers, LHP
5. Luis Gil, RHP

This projected rotation is likely what the Yankees begin the 2026 season with. There could be some change in the order, but this would allow the Yankees to break up their left-handers and right-handers, while putting Fried and Schlittler atop the rotation.

It’s far from ideal, and isn’t a World Series-caliber rotation. But, with the return of Cole and Rodon, along with Schmidt and the potential for other starters to emerge through Spring Training, the rotation is overall in a good spot.

Once Cole and Rodon return, the new-look rotation would be a whole lot better. Fried, Cole, and Schlittler would likely be the main trio, with Warren and Rodon rounding out the five-man rotation.

That would allow for Weathers, who’s started at most 16 games in a season in his career, to take a back-seat as either a sixth man or potentially as a long reliever. The same could happen with Gil.

MoreYankees get $160 million contract update on Cody Bellinger amid stare-down

Or, if the Yankees wanted to, thanks to the Weathers trade, once Rodon, Schmidt, and Cole are back, they could explore a trade or two with their depth starters this upcoming season.

Gil, Warren, or Schmidt might field decent trade interest, allowing the Yankees to upgrade at a position of need if one comes about during the regular season.

Weathers will help keep the Yankees’ rotation afloat to begin the year as one of the back-end arms, but once the three injured starters come back, and assuming there aren’t any other injuries, then Weathers will be incredible insurance for the rotation.

The Yankees’ projected rotation looks a lot better now that Weathers is on the team, as the five-man rotation to begin the season won’t be in as bad a place if none of the three injured starters can go by Opening Day.

Stephen A. Smith Stumbles On Live TV, Misidentifying Texans Star As Charlie Kirk

Stephen A. Smith made quite the awkward on-air blunder while discussing the Houston Texans’ 30-6 playoff win Monday over the Pittsburgh Steelers.

While recapping the matchup on ESPN’s “First Take” on Tuesday, the sports commentator misidentified the Texans’ star wide receiver, Christian Kirk, as the late right-wing political commentator Charlie Kirk.

Politics: Conservative Supreme Court Justices Seem Ready To Let Trans Athlete Bans Stand

“We saw Charlie Kirk catch eight receptions for 144 yards,” Smith said before co-host Shae Peppler Cornette interjected to remind him: “Christian Kirk.”

Smith quickly corrected himself. “I’m sorry, I apologize. Oh, my God, Christian Kirk.”

The verbal slip, which was shared on X by the sports media account Awful Announcing, has already racked up more than 11 million views.

Christian Kirk and his team will play the New England Patriots on Sunday in an NFL divisional round playoff game. It appears that he has not publicly commented on the slip-up.

Charlie Kirk, who co-founded the right-wing nonprofit Turning Point USA, built a massive social media following by holding debates on contentious cultural issues, where he often made incendiary, racist or sexist remarks. He was shot and killed while speaking with students at Utah Valley University on Sept. 10, 2025.

After the killing, Smith condemned anyone celebrating Kirk’s death on his SiriusXM radio show.

“I don’t care what his political beliefs were. I don’t care what he felt. I care about the fact that a man was gunned down in front of two of his children, who are 5 years of age or less,” he said during the Sep. 11 episode.

He also praised the New York Yankees for honoring Kirk with a moment of silence ahead of a game against the Detroit Tigers.

“Props to the New York Yankees organization last night for having a moment of silence,” Smith said. “We’re not supposed to condone stuff like this. We’re not supposed to say it’s OK. I don’t give a **** who you are, Black, white or anything in between.”

Chargers fire offensive coordinator Greg Roman and offensive line coach Mike Devlin

EL SEGUNDO, Calif. (AP) — The Los Angeles Chargers fired offensive coordinator Greg Roman and offensive line coach Mike Devlin on Tuesday, two days after the team lost 16-3 to the New England Patriots in the wild-card round of the playoffs.

Roman spent two seasons as the Chargers’ OC after previously holding the position with the Baltimore Ravens, Buffalo Bills and San Francisco 49ers. Los Angeles posted back-to-back 11-6 seasons but lost its playoff opener each time, scoring a total of 15 points in the two games.

After Sunday night’s game, coach Jim Harbaugh was asked if Roman was the right person to be calling plays and declined to give Roman a vote of confidence.

“Right now I don’t have the answers,” he said. “We’re going to look at that, at everything. It really falls on me that we weren’t at our best tonight. I don’t have the answers. I wish I did.”

Devlin followed a seven-year career as an offensive lineman for Buffalo and Arizona as an offensive line coach for the Cardinals, Jets, Texans and Ravens before spending the last two seasons with the Cardinals.

Los Angeles lost both of its starting offensive tackles to season-ending injuries, and Chargers quarterbacks were sacked 60 times — second-worst in the NFL — in 2025. Justin Herbert was brought down six times on Sunday night.

The Chargers haven’t won a postseason game since 2018. Herbert is 0-3 in the playoffs for his career.

AFCON semi-final reveals stark contrast between Egypt and Senegal

AFCON semi-final reveals stark contrast between Egypt and Senegal

Egypt & Senegal embody two paths

AFCON semi-final reveals stark contrast between Egypt and Senegal

Senegal enter Wednesday’s AFCON 2025 semi-final against Egypt with squad dominated by overseas professionals.

The last four meeting brings together two historic power of African football. Egypt booked their place with 3 – 2 win over Ivory Coast while Senegal edged Mali 1 – 0. The winner will advance to the final to face either Morocco or Nigeria.

What sets this duel apart is the makeup of the two squad. Senegal arrive with roster built almost entirely abroad featuring 20 player active in Europe’s top five league. Egypt by comparison rely heavily on domestic based talent, with only three player currently plying their trade outside the Arab world.

Mohamed Salah captured the contrast with smile after the quarter final.

“The coach said we have ‘one and a quarter professionals’” he joked. “Now we are three quarters of professional team”

The remark referred to the reality that Salah, Omar Marmoush and Mostafa Mohamed are not regular starters at their clubs this season.

Senegal’s list reads like European roll call. Ten player operate in Ligue 1 including Yahia Diouf, Moussa Niakhaté, Krépin Diatta and rising striker Ibrahim Mbaye.

Six more feature in the Premier League, among them Idrissa Gueye, Pape Matar Sarr and Ismaïla Sarr. Others are spread across Spain, Germany and Italy while Sadio Mané, Kalidou Koulibaly and Édouard Mendy form high profile trio in Saudi Arabia.

Egypt and Senegal have met five time in the African Cup of Nations, with the Lions of Teranga winning three times and Pharaohs winning twice.

£62m Semenyo praises “perfect” environment at Man City

£62m Semenyo praises “perfect” environment at Man City

Antoine Semenyo has certainly hit the ground running since arriving in Manchester.

Pep Guardiola’s side paid £62m for the 26-year-old forward, who scored and assisted on his debut against Exeter City in the Emirates FA Cup on Saturday.

Now, just three days later, the Ghanaian has impressed again. A Jérémy Doku cross, nudged on at the near post by Bernardo Silva, gave the ex-Bournemouth star a simple finish in the 53rd minute of their Carabao Cup semi-final first leg against Newcastle United – and he came close to doubling his tally ten minutes later, though a lengthy VAR suggested that Erling Haaland had impeded Nick Pope’s vision in the buildup.

Rayan Cherki did eventually find that elusive second goal deep inside stoppage time at St James’ Park, although City were left ruing what could prove to be a costly disallowed goal if the Magpies get off to a good start in next month’s second leg at the Etihad.

“The second goal should have counted by the way,” Semenyo told TV cameras as he trodded off the pitch on Tuesday night, and his sentiment was echoed by teammate Bernardo Silva, who suggested that the decision “looks ridiculous”.

But despite his grievances with the officials, Semenyo revealed that he is “enjoying every moment” of his time at Manchester City, hailing his teammates who “have helped me with my confidence and they’ve made me feel welcome.”

“The whole environment here is perfect,” the forward explained.

Things could yet get even better for Semenyo and his new teammates, as they turn their attention to Saturday’s trip across Manchester to face the Red Devils at Old Trafford. Pep Guardiola’s men will smell blood, relishing an opportunity to close the six-point gap to Arsenal by running riot against Manchester United in the first game of Michael Carrick’s interim spell as head coach.

The MLB offseason can sometimes move at a painfully slow pace, but if history is any indication, December will be the busiest month — thanks in part to the Winter Meetings, which can sometimes lead to a flurry of player movement.

The annual congregation of executives, managers, free agents and, of course, agents takes place in Orlando this year, and there is plenty of business to get done.

Names such as Dylan Cease, Pete Alonso and Edwin Díaz are already off the board and headed to new teams. Meanwhile, a number of big names remain unsigned or involved in trade rumors.

Speaking of the trade market, things on that front could be worth watching more closely in the coming days. While a Tarik Skubal trade doesn’t seem imminent or even particularly likely this offseason, Ketel Marte, MacKenzie Gore and Jarren Duran are among the names who have surfaced in rumors.

The Sporting News is tracking all of the latest buzz below, from rumors to signings and trades. Follow along with the latest updates.

Jets predicted to trade for $212 million QB in lieu of Dante Moore

Jets predicted to trade for $212 million QB in lieu of Dante Moore originally appeared on The Sporting News.
Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.

Assuming that Fernando Mendoza is the No. 1 overall NFL Draft pick by the Las Vegas Raiders, the New York Jets will have to cross their fingers.

Dante Moore isn’t a lock to come out of Oregon and enter the draft. He’d be the only clear QB2 in a class that isn’t as strong as once thought.

If Moore stays in school, the Jets may have to pursue a different route at the quarterback position.

Bleacher Report’s Alex Ballentine suggests an outside the box option: Tua Tagovailoa.

Tagovailoa has multiple years remaining on what was originally a $212 million contract with the Miami Dolphins. It’d be a fascinating intra-division trade.

Because it’d be a salary dump, the Jets in this projected trade actually also receive a second-round pick and cash while only giving up a fifth-round pick.

“For all of Tua Tagovailoa’s faults, he is 44-32 as a starter,” Ballentine writes. “Tagovailoa said he would be open to a fresh start after a season in which he ended on the bench. The only problem is that he’s only one year into his four-year extension. The Jets are uniquely positioned to help the Dolphins out. They have $93.7 million in cap space, which is plenty to take on a significant portion of Tagovailoa’s contract before cutting it in 2027 with little additional cost. That would help the Jets win now while adding to their draft pick stockpile and showing some creativity in navigating their rebuild under Glenn and general manager Darren Mougey.”

MIKE TOMLIN NEWS: What it means for Rodgers | TV future | Tomlin trade potential | Cignetti?

It would certainly be fascinating to see the Jets’ leadership group put their futures in the hands of Tagovailoa.

It’s hard to know if Tua could be good enough without a talented receiving corps, but maybe he needs the change of scenery more than anything else.

The narratives would be great if this happened, for sure.

MSU to reportedly host 4-star WR commit Samson Gash later this month

One of the remaining and most important prospects in the Spartans’ recruiting 2026 class will reportedly visit Michigan State later this month.

Michigan State verbal commit Samson Gash of Novi, Mich. will reportedly visit the Spartans later this month, according to Allen Trieu of 247Sports. Gash will visit Michigan State on January 30. He will also visit Penn State this upcoming weekend, per 247Sports.

Gash is a four-star wide receiver, with a recruiting rating of 90 on 247Sports. He is ranked as the No. 50 wide receiver and No. 5 player from Michigan in the class.

Gash has been verbally committed to Michigan State since late June but elected to not sign with the Spartans during the early signing period earlier this month. He remained verbally committed to the Spartans but is exploring all options at this time. Gash has recently picked up offers from Penn State and Georgia, and has also been heavily connected with Alabama as well. However, it now appears Penn State is the biggest competitor to the Spartans for Gash’s commitment, as both schools will look to win him over before signing day comes in February.

Click on the post below to read the complete story on Gash’s recent recruiting updates from Trieu:

Detroit Catholic Central WR Samson Gash, one of the top unsigned 2026s, had in-home visits with Michigan State and Penn State over the weekend as both schools prepare to host him on officials.

Latest Kyle Tucker free agency buzz: Blue Jays offer outfielder long-term deal, Dodgers still lurking

Here is the latest news and buzz surrounding free agent outfielder Kyle Tucker and his chances of signing with the Mets

Jan. 13, 7:17 p.m.

With the news of the Mets offering Tucker a short-term, high-AAV deal worth $50 million per year breaking earlier on Tuesday, reports of the Blue Jays’ offer to the outfielder have also come out with Toronto making a long-term contract offer that pays Tucker less per year than New York’s offer, per USA Today’s Bob Nightengale.

Meanwhile, the Dodgers, the other most aggressive suitor in the Tucker sweepstakes, are lurking with a massive short-term deal as well, per Nightengale, although no numbers have been reported.

Jan. 13, 8:40 a.m.

The Yankees are “on the periphery” of the Tucker situation, reports Jon Heyman of The New York Post.

With negotiations between the Yanks and Cody Bellinger reportedly at “an impasse,” the Bombers — who are still attempting to work something out with Bellinger — have been exploring alternative options.

In addition to Tucker and Bellinger, Bo Bichette remains on the free agent market.

Tucker has been linked most seriously lately to the Blue Jays, Mets, and Dodgers, and has reportedly taken meetings with all three teams.

The expectation at the beginning of the offseason was that Tucker would receive a massive deal in terms of both length and dollars. However, it now seems possible he’ll opt for a shorter-term deal with opt-outs and a much higher average annual value than he would otherwise receive under a long-term pact.

Jan. 11, 9:35 p.m.

The Mets, Dodgers, and Blue Jays – the three teams identified as the main teams involved in the pursuit for Tucker – have either “in person or over Zoom,” met with the free agent outfielder, according to a report Sunday night from former MLB exec and MLB Network radio analyst Jim Duquette.

Duquette added that this is “part of the recruiting process for a star player,” but that it will “be interesting to see” if any of the teams increase their offers to “separate themselves from the other.”

Earlier reports suggested that Tucker may have to settle for a short-term deal with a high AAV, but one team is seemingly willing to commit to the All-Star outfielder long term.

The Athletic’s Will Sammon reports that while the Mets, Dodgers and Blue Jays are among Tucker’s options this offseason, New York’s preference is to offer a shorter contract. Sammon speculates the Mets would like to make a deal with a length of less than four years. However, the Blue Jays are expected to offer a longer contract this offseason.

Sammon notes that the Dodgers should not be ignored, as they have a history of swooping in and making deals.

After trading Brandon Nimmo to the Rangers, Juan Soto is the only Mets outfielder written on the lineup in pen. Tyrone Taylor and Carson Benge are the current top candidates to fill center field and left field, but adding Tucker would immediately change that equation.

Three teams have emerged as the most “aggressive” in their pursuit of Tucker.

According to former MLB exec and MLB Network radio analyst Jim Duquette, the Mets, Dodgers and Blue Jays are the most aggressive suitors for Tucker. However, Duquette adds that nothing appears imminent and there is some distance between the other team reportedly interested and the main three.

The Athletic’s Mitch Bannon reported Tuesday that Toronto has increased their efforts to recruit Tucker as he fits their roster construction better than former infielder Bo Bichette. After signing Japanese star Kazuma Okamoto, the Blue Jays’ infield is likely set, while an outfield addition is easier. Adding Tucker would mean Anthony Santander would move to left field, allowing George Springer to play most of the time as the team’s DH.

Bob Nightengale of USA Today reported Monday that Tucker’s market is “the biggest mystery,” adding that he could have to “take a higher AAV on a short-term contract and hit the market again after two consecutive injury-plagued second halves.”

Many believed Tucker’s market would result in a massive contract in terms of length, with some projecting a contract of 10 or even 11 years. However, that may not be the case if teams balk at the idea of a long-term commitment.

Analyst gives easy reason for Ravens 2026 optimism

The Baltimore Ravens had a season from hell in 2025.

Injuries to key players, inconsistent form, and ultimately missing the playoffs, the sooner this season is forgotten, the better.

But with John Harbaugh out as head coach, Lamar Jackson will have a new voice in his ear, with Todd Monken also out as offensive coordinator.

With so much change happening for a usually stable organization, is there any reason to suggest that 2026 will be different from 2025?

CBS Sports’ Josh Edwards has given Ravens fans one reason for optimism in 2026, and in truth, it’s a rather easy one to guess.

“As long as Lamar Jackson is around and healthy, Baltimore should always be in the conversation,” Edwards wrote. “They just need to find a few more guys who fit the culture on defense. Fortunately, they do as well as anyone stockpiling draft assets and giving themselves more bites at the apple.”

Lamar Jackson needs bounce-back season in 2026

It wasn’t a good year for Lamar.

Injuries, inconsistent play, plus his practice “schedule” led to a lot of criticism.

Jackson had his fewest TDs and passing yards since 2022, the most interceptions since 2021, and had a 6-7 record.

That won’t cut it.

And next season, hopefully being fully healthy, Lamar, with a new head coach and offensive coordinator, can rediscover his MVP-level form.

Because missing the playoffs this season, while not ideal, there were circumstances to it. But miss next season? Yeah, that’s nightmare fuel.
