Cole Young looks sharp on defense in Mariners 3-0 loss to Dodgers in Spring Training

Well, that was more spring baseball.

The Mariners fourth Spring Training game on Monday was more of the same: weak at bats, sloppy play, and a bunch of names so unremarkable they didn’t even bother printing them on the jerseys. I still enjoyed it, though. These games might be meaningless, but they are still baseball, still something to pass the time, still a chance to see your favorite players, however briefly. Only four more weeks until the real thing. We’re getting there.

The Mariners lost to the Dodgers 3-0. They collected just four hits and one walk. Here’s what I thought was notable.

Cole Young and Colt Emerson

Mariners’ brass got another chance to see Cole Young and Colt Emerson in direct competition for an infield spot. Young hit seventh in the lineup and played second base; Emerson hit eighth and played shortstop. Neither’s day at the plate was all that notable. Young struck out in both his plate appearances, both times against a lefty. Emerson drew a nice walk against a righty in his first at bat, then popped out against a lefty in his second.

Both made nice plays in the field. With a runner on first, Emerson got a line drive right to him at short. He dropped it intentionally and tried to turn the double play. The umpires didn’t buy it and called it a catch, but it was a nice display of awareness regardless. The game doesn’t look too big for him so far.

Young was especially impressive. In the third, he backed up first base on a ball that squirted out of Patrick Wisdom’s glove, adjusted his momentum to get to the ball, and made a nice short throw to first. Later in the inning he made a strong throw across the infield while turning a double play. In the fifth, he ranged to his right and snagged a grounder with a dive, then popped up and fired to first. These are the specific plays that really sunk Young’s value last year in the field—going to his right and making quick, unconventional throws—and its encouraging to see some improvement right out of the gate. This is the type of thing I can get excited about in Spring Training.

Logan Gilbert

Logan Gilbert made his first start of Spring Training. Like all Mariners starting pitchers, I’m interested in whether we might spy any arsenal tweaks, like new pitch types or shapes. FanGraphs’ Michael Rosen noted Gilbert was throwing what looked like a redesigned cutter. The rest of his stuff looked pretty sharp, too. His velocity was up from last year at 96+ mph, and he picked up a few strikeouts.

Gilbert’s 2025 is tough to summarize. He took a notable step forward in “stuff,” generating whiffs and strikeouts at an elite level. But it seemed to come at the expense of efficiency, as he struggled to work deeper into games. We don’t know much about how he might resolve that issue in 2026 after Monday’s outing, but we’ll see what adjustments he makes as he stretches out.

Jose Ferrer

Jose Ferrer’s time with the Mariners started out great. He got a three pitch strikeout on Andy Pages and celebrated with a little spin. It was nasty a pitch—an 85 mph changeup below the zone off back-to-back heaters up. Pages looked fooled.

Ferrer then gave up three consecutive hits and a walk and was removed from the game before recording another out. The contact he allowed wasn’t especially good and one of the hits really should have been caught by Victor Robles in right field. But Ferrer will take solace in that his performance with the Mariners can only improve from here.

Andrew Knizner

Andrew Knizner made three challenges. The first two he called correctly from behind the plate, stealing strikes for his pitchers and even ending a fourth inning jam with a challenge K. He also challenged a high strike as a batter and lost. It’s interesting to see the Mariners’ catchers testing out the new system early on.

Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao agree to a rematch in September at The Sphere in Las Vegas

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao have agreed to a rematch of their landmark 2015 bout.

Their second fight will be held Sept. 19 in Las Vegas, the boxing icons announced Monday. The fight, which will be streamed on Netflix, will be the first boxing match to be held at Sphere, the immersive event venue east of the Strip.

Mayweather, who turns 49 years old on Tuesday, announced his intention last week to end his nine-year retirement from competitive boxing. The 47-year-old Pacquiao ended his own retirement last year, and he is scheduled to meet Ruslan Provodnikov on April 18 in the second bout of his comeback.

The two most prominent boxers of their generation will meet again 11 years after Mayweather beat Pacquiao by decision in a fight that didn’t live up to the decade of hype preceding it. The bout’s promoters claimed it was still the most profitable fight in history, setting pay-per-view records and attracting worldwide attention.

“I already fought and beat Manny once,” Mayweather said in a statement. “This time will be the same result.”

Pacquiao later revealed he fought with a shoulder injury because he didn’t want to postpone such an important event. He was unable to apply his usual offensive pressure to Mayweather, who employed his usual defense-first strategy while easing to victory.

“The fans have waited long enough — they deserve this rematch,” Pacquiao said. “I want Floyd to live with the one loss on his professional record and always remember who gave it to him.”

The fighters’ first meeting happened more than a half-decade after fans first began to clamor for an obvious matchup between two similarly-sized greats. Both sides blamed the other for the delay at times, but Mayweather always asserted he would fight whoever he wanted, whenever he wanted — leading many fans to feel Mayweather waited to accept the bout until he felt age had taken a bit of sting out of Pacquiao’s famously vicious punches.

Both fighters are now much more than a decade removed from their primes, but Mayweather and Pacquiao remain two of the biggest names in boxing.

After Mayweather beat Conor McGregor in 2017 and retired with a 50-0 record, he spent much of his 40s competing in lucrative boxing “exhibitions” against YouTubers and fringe competitors while largely maintaining his lavish lifestyle outside the ring. He is currently in legal disputes with multiple alleged creditors over issues ranging from unpaid rent on a Manhattan apartment to outstanding jewelry bills.

Pacquiao ran unsuccessfully for the presidency of his native Philippines and then lost in the Philippine Senate election last May. He returned to the ring two months after that setback, fighting WBC welterweight champion Mario Barrios to a majority draw while trying to become the oldest welterweight champion.

The rematch is the latest bout to land on Netflix as the platform continues to scoop up top fights for its live sports programming. The streamer showcased Terence Crawford’s victory over Canelo Álvarez last year, and it will show heavyweight champ Tyson Fury’s comeback bout in April.

Dodgers blank Mariners in 3-0 win

The Dodgers are on a roll to begin the spring as they notched their third consecutive victory with a 3-0 shutout win over the Seattle Mariners on Monday.

Landon Knack was given the start for Monday’s contest, making quick work of the Mariners by facing the minimum in the first inning while tossing just nine pitches.

Jack Dreyer made his first appearance of the spring, giving up a two-out single to Andrew Knizner but managing to escape the second inning unscathed. Ben Casparius, Kyle Hurt and Alex Vesia all made their first appearances of the spring, each notching a scoreless inning in relief.

Andy Pages added another two hits with a pair of singles in his second game of the spring, giving him four hits and a .667 batting average.

Scoring was hard to come by on Monday, even more than Sunday, but the Dodgers took advantage with runners in scoring position as Alex Freeland roped an opposite field double off of Jose A. Ferrer to plate Dalton Rushing and Santiago Espinal to give the Dodgers a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth inning. Zach Ehrhard reached on a fielding error from Rhylan Thomas to plate a run and make it a three run Dodger lead in the bottom of the sixth inning.

— Los Angeles Dodgers (@Dodgers) February 23, 2026

Nick Robertson made his first appearance as a Dodger since the 2023 regular season, notching the save with a scoreless ninth inning to give the Dodgers a 3-0 start to the spring.

The Dodgers are now averaging 7.7 runs per game this spring, but they have yet to hit a home run as a team so far.

Up next

The Dodgers are back at Camelback Ranch on Tuesday as they host the Cleveland Guardians (12:10 p.m. PT, SportsNet LA). Gavin Stone makes his spring debut against right-hander Gavin Williams.

Adam 'Pacman' Jones faces 18-month sentence for assaulting cop

Former Bengals cornerback Adam “Pacman” Jones has admitted in court to assaulting a police officer after his arrest in a separate incident at a Covington bar last year.

Jones, 42, pleaded guilty on Feb. 20 in Kenton County Circuit Court to felony assault, according to Kenton County Commonwealth’s Attorney Rob Sanders. He also pleaded guilty to misdemeanor counts of disorderly conduct, menacing, resisting arrest and a lower-level assault charge.

As part of Jones’ plea agreement, Sanders said in an email, prosecutors are recommending an 18-month sentence for the felony charge, which would run concurrently with any sentence imposed for the misdemeanors.

Jones ‘intentionally threw his elbow’ at officer, police say

Covington police responded to the Second Story bar on Sixth Street early in June for a report of customer trouble, according to a criminal citation. Officers stopped Jones in his Rolls-Royce and the ex-Bengal exited the vehicle, trying to walk away from police.

Police noted that Jones was “unsteady on his feet, had red, glossy eyes and had slurred speech.”

The citation states that Jones was screaming obscenities and began yelling at officers after they warned him to stop walking away.

Roughly an hour later, at the Kenton County Detention Center, Jones was handcuffed and “intentionally threw his elbow upwards,” striking an officer in the bottom lip, a separate citation states.

Timothy Schneider, Jones’ attorney, has yet to respond to a phone call from The Enquirer.

Prosecutors say Jones was uncooperative with court-ordered treatment

Court documents show that prosecutors sought to have Jones’ bond revoked ahead of trial for using controlled substances and failing to complete substance-use treatment or cooperate with treatment providers.

Jones was terminated from a court-ordered treatment program at the St. Elizabeth Journey Recovery Center for “excessive tardiness” and continued use of THC products, a notice filed in September states.

Court records show Jones is listed as a patient with the Ohio Medical Marijuana Registry.

While court documents list Jones’ address as being in Cincinnati, he told treatment program staff, “I do not stay here and I have to get on a flight to make my appointments,” reads a program termination letter.

Ex-Bengal has prior arrests related to alcohol use

Jones’ past troubles with the law were also partly due to his alcohol consumption.

He was arrested at the Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport in the summer of 2023 after police were called for help with an “unruly passenger” on an early morning flight. When arrested, Jones threatened to cause serious physical harm, The Enquirer previously reported, adding that Jones was also charged with alcohol intoxication.

He was arrested again in the fall of 2024 at a hotel in Arlington, Texas, after the Mike Tyson and Jake Paul boxing match at AT&T Stadium, according to USA TODAY.

Jones was charged with assaulting a peace officer, public intoxication and resisting arrest after police responded to a bar fight after the match.

He is expected to appear in court again on April 14 for sentencing before Judge Patricia Summe.

Enquirer staff reporter Jolene Almendarez contributed.

Cubs 3, Royals 2: Jefferson Rojas homers in the Cubs’ first spring win

This is going to be an old-school recap, because I do not have any video of the Cubs’ 3-2 win over the Royals to show you.

So you’ll have to deal with descriptions, and a few MLB Gameday graphics.

Ben Brown threw the first two innings for the Cubs. It was a good outing. He allowed two hits, no runs and struck out three.

Here is one of the strikeouts, of Salvador Perez. Brown stuck with his fastball and curve, and check out some of the velocity:

Hopefully, Brown will begin to mix in some of the other pitches he says he’s been working on. He threw 30 pitches (20 strikes).

Javier Assad threw 1.1 innings and didn’t allow a run, throwing 20 strikes among his 29 pitches, a good first outing of the spring.

In the fourth, Jefferson Rojas gave the Cubs a 1-0 lead with his first home run of the spring. This is an excellent location for a pitch to hit and Rojas did not miss:

The Cubs scored two more runs in the fifth off former Cubs No. 1 draft pick (2017) Alex Lange, thanks in part to an error from the usually sure-handed Royals shortstop Bobby Witt Jr. James Triantos singled in both runs. Triantos and Scott Kingery also stole bases in that inning.

There were a number of ABS challenges in this game and here’s one made by Royals center fielder Kyle Isbel. The call on the field was strike three and it was confirmed. As you can see, it was close, but a strike:

For the Cubs, Ariel Armas and Justin Dean both challenged and the calls were confirmed, so by the sixth inning the Cubs had no challenges left. That’s fine for a spring game where guys are testing out the system, but in a regular season game you probably won’t see two challenges like that, that early.

Porter Hodge had a much better outing this time than his first time out, striking out a pair in a scoreless inning, with just one walk. I’d think Hodge still has a chance at the Opening Day roster, if he can put together more innings like this.

Ryan Rolison and Collin Snider, both of whom could wind up on the Iowa Shuttle this year, threw scoreless innings against mostly Royals minor leaguers. Josh Rojas homered off Cubs minor leaguer Tyler Ras for KC’s only run.

That’s about all I’ve got from this one, without any video to show you.

The Cubs will return to Sloan Park Tuesday afternoon to face the Padres. Shōta Imanaga will start for the Cubs and Marco Gonzales will go for San Diego. Game time Tuesday is again 2:05 p.m. CT. No TV again Tuesday, and there will be a radio broadcast online via SD Audio.

Magical Kobbie Mainoo runs the show again with spellbinding performance vs. Everton

Magical Kobbie Mainoo runs the show again with spellbinding performance vs. Everton

Manchester United midfielder Kobbie Mainoo delivered another jaw-dropping performance, this time to help his side to a 1-0 victory over Everton.

United beat Everton

United made their way to the Hill Dickinson Stadium looking to get back to winning ways, having been held to a frustrating draw by West Ham in their previous outing.

Michael Carrick has yet to taste defeat since he was named interim head coach, and he stretched this run to six games as he led United to all three points against David Moyes’ men.

Like West Ham, Everton dug in and were buoyed by home advantage. They closed down the spaces and defended in a low block, aiming to frustrate United and pull off a massive upset. They came close a few times, but an inspired Senne Lammens had an answer for everything that was thrown at him.

United did not create many clear-cut opportunities, meaning they needed to make the limited chances they had count. Through substitute Benjamin Sesko, they certainly did just that.

Sesko produced a clever touch to lay the ball into the path of Luke Shaw, who then passed it on to Matheus Cunha. The Brazilian executed a sumptuous diagonal ball to Bryan Mbeumo, who beat Michael Keane in a foot race. Mbeumo then picked his moment before sliding it into the path of Sesko, who had covered so much ground and produced a fine finish into the bottom corner.

Everton pushed for an equaliser in the closing stages, especially from set-pieces, but United stood firm and held on for all three points.

Yet again, Mainoo was a standout performer for the Red Devils.

Brilliant Mainoo

Mainoo has been in excellent form since Ruben Amorim was sacked and he regained his place in the team under Carrick.

While Bruno Fernandes was unusually quiet and Casemiro operated below his usual standard, Mainoo stood out on hostile territory. He offered whatever little calm and composure United had in the middle of the park.

The England international successfully found a United teammate with 49 of the 51 passes he attempted (96% individual pass accuracy). He pinged one long ball, finding his target with it.

He touched the ball 74 times and embarked on 13 carries, two of which were progressive.

Mainoo was solid defensively, making six contributions. He made three clearances and as many recoveries. He also blocked one shot.

The 20-year-old delved into nine ground duels, winning four of them. He came out on top in just one of the three aerial duels he contested.

It was another statement display by Mainoo, who is simply flying at the moment.

United return to action on Sunday when they welcome Crystal Palace to Old Trafford.

Neville already knows what ‘aggressive’ message one United star will be sending to Carrick after Everton triumph

Neville already knows what ‘aggressive’ message one United star will be sending to Carrick after Everton triumph

Benjamin Sesko has come off the bench to score in two successive matches for Manchester United.

Tonight’s tremendous effort from the Slovenian international was a match-winner for United, which ensured they secured a crucial three points in their maiden trip to the Hill Dickinson Stadium.

DOWNLOAD THE OFFICIAL STRETTY NEWSAPP FOR ALL THE LATEST UPDATES & BREAKING NEWS – STRAIGHT TO YOUR PHONE! ON APPLE & GOOGLE PLAY

Sesko nets seventh Premier League goal in hard-fought Everton affair

A swift counter-attacking move from the Reds culminated with Sesko finding the back of the net after being played in by Bryan Mbeumo, who also assisted the striker for his last-gasp equaliser away to West Ham United two weeks ago.

It marks the 22-year-old’s sixth goal in his last seven appearances across all competitions. Three of those goals have come under Michael Carrick alone, despite Carrick refraining from starting Sesko in any of the matches he’s overseen.

That could all be about to change now, though.

Gary Neville believes Sesko’s passionate celebration on Merseyside was his way of sending an indirect message to his boss.

He said on Sky Sports’ live coverage: “That aggressive celebration is the celebration of a man who’s saying to his manager, ‘You must start me!’”

How could Carrick slot Sesko into his starting XI?

Presumably, Amad Diallo would be sacrificed to make way for Sesko to start if Carrick did opt to make a change for the home clash with Crystal Palace on Sunday, as that was the substitution he made tonight.

The winger had struggled to make an impact in the hour of action he played, so was first to exit the field when United were desperately searching for a breakthrough.

This evening’s result not only means that the side remain unbeaten under Carrick, but they are also now three points ahead of both Chelsea (fifth) and Liverpool (sixth), as well as just three points behind third-placed Aston Villa, whom United face at Old Trafford on March 15.

Kenneth Walker, Rashid Shaheed, 8 free agents with Klint Kubiak ties Las Vegas Raiders could target

SANTA CLARA, CA – FEBRUARY 08: Seattle Seahawks running back Kenneth Walker III (9) gets away from New England Patriots defensive end Milton Williams (97) during the Seattle Seahawks versus the New England Patriots Super Bowl LX game on February 8, 2026, at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, CA. Free agency is steadily approaching, and the Las Vegas Raiders are scheduled to hit the market with over $91 million (second-most in the NFL) to improve the roster. That means new head coach Klint Kubiak can dive into his Rolodex of players that he’s worked with in the past, and potentially sign them to play in Las Vegas. Keeping the Raiders’ offseason needs in mind, let’s explore a few upcoming free agents with ties to Kubiak.

RB Kenneth Walker III

Kubiak connection:2025 Seattle Seahawks

Walker is coming off a career year that culminated with the Super Bowl MVP award. He excelled in Kubiak’s offense, recording a career-high 1,309 yards from scrimmage during the regular season and then 417 more yards in the playoffs. The Raiders could use a second running back to pair with Ashton Jeanty, making it an option for Walker to continue to play for Kubiak. However, the veteran is expected to command top dollar in the running back market. While the Raiders have plenty of cap space, it’d be more economical to sign a lower-profile rusher with Jeanty in the fold.

WR Rashid Shaheed

Kubiak connection:2024 New Orleans Saints, 2025 Seahawks

It’s pretty clear that Kubiak is a big fan of Shaheed’s game. The wideout only played in six games (20 catches, 349 yards and three touchdowns in those contests) for the coach in New Orleans, but that was enough for Seattle to trade for Shaheed last fall. In Vegas, the two-time Pro Bowler could easily become the team’s top wide receiver and would give the return game a boost. The latter is how he’s earned those All-Star bids. But is Shaheed enough of an upgrade over Tre Tucker to justify spending a lot of money on him? The answer to that question depends on how highly Kubiak thinks of the impending free agent.

EDGE Boye Mafe

Kubiak connection:2025 with Seahawks

Another former Seahawk, Mafe played on the opposite side of the ball as Kubiak. But the former offensive coordinator had to take note of the 40 pressures, per Pro Football Focus, that the edge-rusher racked up during the regular season last year. The four-year veteran has 20 career sacks and can play the run too, recording a 77.8 PFF run defense grade in 2024. He’d be a quality addition to line up on the other side of Maxx Crosby, or be part of the plan to replace Crosby if the five-time Pro Bowler gets traded.

WR Jauan Jennings

Kubiak connection: 2023 with San Francisco 49ers

In five years, Jennings went from being a seventh-round pick to leading the 49ers’ wideouts in receiving yards over the last two seasons, racking up 975 and 643 yards in 2024 and 2025, respectively. It also helps that he has the versatility to line up in the slot or out wide, recording 45 percent of his pass snaps at the former and 55 percent in the latter, per PFF. However, the 28-year-old who turns 29 in July is on the older side and isn’t the top-end talent the Raiders will likely be looking for. That could lessen the mutual interest between the impending free agent and rebuilding club.

CB Tariq Woolen

Kubiak connection:2025 with Seahawks

Ball skills are the name of Woolen’s game, collecting 12 interceptions and 53 passes defended since entering the NFL four years ago. That’s enticing for a team like the Raiders since the defense has struggled to create turnovers over the last few seasons. But half of the 2022 fifth-rounder’s picks came during his rookie season, and he hasn’t been sticky in coverage, surrendering 1,662 yards and 17 touchdowns in four years, per PFF. Especially if Eric Stokes doesn’t re-sign, Woolen would fill a big need in Las Vegas’ defensive backfield, though.

S Coby Bryant

Kubiak connection:2025 with Seahawks

Speaking of creating turnovers, Bryant switched from nickelback to safety ahead of the 2024 campaign and managed to record seven interceptions after changing positions. He also has seven forced fumbles and 17 PDs in his career. Additionally, the four-year pro has posted PFF run defense grades of 79.5 and 70.3 during the last two regular seasons. Considering the Raiders could use an upgrade at free safety this offseason, Bryant should be one of their top priorities.

WR Deebo Samuel

Kubiak connection:2023 with 49ers

Samuel, who is known for his ability to contribute in both the running and passing games, has recorded over 1,000 yards and double-digit touchdowns from scrimmage twice in his career. Once in 2021, and again in 2023, racking up 1,117 yards and 12 touchdowns in the latter. So, Kubiak has the inside track on how to get the most out of Samuel. The problem is that the 30-year-old hasn’t looked like the player he was three years ago, and wouldn’t fit the expected youth movement in the desert.

LB Alex Singleton

Kubiak connection:2022 with Denver Broncos

Singleton is another impending free agent whose age could be an issue for the Raiders, turning 32 last December. But if Kubiak uses his network to give his defense someone who can provide run support on the second level, the Bronco would be a good short-term option. Singleton was PFF’s 12-highest graded run-defending linebacker (82.9) during the regular season last year, and has earned marks in the mid-70s to low-80s as a run defender since 2022.

Commanders, OL Andrew Wylie agree to two-year deal

The Commanders are holding onto one of their top reserve offensive linemen.

They have agreed to a new deal with Andrew Wylie, who was set to become a free agent. Multiple reporters confirmed a report by Ari Meirov of The 33rd Team that the deal is for two years and is worth $7.5 million with an upside of $10.5 million.

Wylie started 29 games for the Commanders over the 2023 and 2024 seasons, but only started five of his 16 appearances during the 2025 season. He spent his first five seasons in Kansas City and started 59 games during his time with the Chiefs.

Left guard Chris Paul is still set for free agency in Washington. Backups Trent Scott, George Fant, and Lucas Niang also do not have contracts for 2026.
